About vCenter Server Upgrade1vCenter Server Upgrade describes how to upgrade VMware vCenter Server to the currentversion. To move to the current version of vCenter Server by performing a fresh installation that does notpreserve the existing configuration of your environment, see the vCenter Server Installation andSetup documentation. At VMware, we value inclusion. To foster this principle within our customer, partner, and internalcommunity, we have updated this guide to remove instances of non-inclusive language.Intended AudiencevCenter Server Upgrade is for anyone who must upgrade from earlier versions of vSphere. Thesetopics are for experienced Microsoft Windows or Linux system administrators who are familiarwith virtual machine technology and data center operations.VMware, Inc.7

Updated InformationThis guide is updated with each release of the product or when necessary. This table provides the update history of the vCenter Server Upgrade guide.RevisionDescription12 NOV 2020nThe list of all supported ports and protocols in vSphere is now available in the VMware Ports andProtocols Tool . To learn more, see Required Ports for vCenter Server.nAdded guidance that, during upgrade, the temporary vCenter Server instance requires the sameaccess rights as the permanent IP address to port 443. Ensure that any firewalls in your environmentallow both the temporary and permanent vCenter Server instances to access port 443. SeePrerequisites for Upgrading the vCenter Server Appliance.nUpdated the list of supported web browers to use with the vSphere Client. vCenter Server Upgrade Options2vCenter Server 7.0 provides many options for upgrading your vCenter Server deployment. For asuccessful vCenter Server upgrade, you must understand the upgrade options, the configurationdetails that impact the upgrade process, and the sequence of tasks. The two core components of vSphere are VMware ESXi and VMware vCenter Server . ESXi isthe virtualization platform on which you can create and run virtual machines and virtualappliances. vCenter Server is a service that acts as a central administrator for ESXi hostsconnected in a network. You use the vCenter Server system to pool and manage the resourcesof multiple hosts. vCenter Server appliance is a preconfigured virtual machine optimized to runvCenter Server. You can upgrade existing vCenter Server deployments that include either an embedded or anexternal Platform Services Controller to a deployment consisting of a vCenter Server appliance. This chapter includes the following topics:nOverview of the vSphere Upgrade ProcessnvCenter Server 7.0 Component Behavior Changes That Affect UpgradenMoving from a Deprecated to a Supported vCenter Server Deployment Topology BeforeUpgrade or MigrationnExample Upgrade Paths from vCenter Server 6.5 and 6.7 to vCenter Server 7.0nExample Migration Paths from vCenter Server for Windows to vCenter Server 7.0Overview of the vSphere Upgrade ProcessvSphere is a sophisticated product with multiple components to upgrade. Understanding therequired sequence of tasks is vital for a successful vSphere upgrade.VMware, Inc.9

See VMware ProductInteroperability Matrix at interop matrix.php.4Upgrade vCenter Server.See Overview of the vCenter Server Upgrade Process.5To ensure sufficient disk storage for log files, consider setting up a syslog server for remotelogging. Setting up logging on a remote host is especially important for hosts with a limitedamount of local storage. For detailed instructions, see ESXi Upgrade.6Upgrade your VMs manually or by using Update Manager to perform an orchestratedupgrade. For detailed instructions, see Installing and Administering VMware vSphere Update Manager.VMware, Inc.10

vCenter Server UpgradeWhen you upgrade vSphere, you must perform all procedures in the specified sequence to avoidpossible data loss and to minimize downtime. You can perform the upgrade process for eachcomponent in only one direction. For example, after you upgrade to vCenter Server 7.0, youcannot revert to vCenter Server 6.5 or 6.7. With backups and some planning, however, you canrestore your original vCenter Server environment.Overview of the vCenter Server Upgrade ProcessVMware provides many options to upgrade to vCenter Server 7.0.You can upgrade or migrate your vCenter Server version 6.5 or version 6.7 installation to version7.0 .Figure 2-2. vCenter Server UpgradeHigh-level steps for upgrading or migrating vCenter Server:1Select your upgrade goal.nChapter 3 Upgrading the vCenter Server AppliancenChapter 4 Migrating vCenter Server for Windows to vCenter Server Appliance2Verify that your system meets the hardware and software requirements.3Prepare your environment for the upgrade or migration.4Upgrade or migrate your vCenter Server for Windows or vCenter Server appliancedeployment.5Finish any required post-upgrade or post-migration tasks.Concurrent upgrades are not supported and upgrade order matters. For information on the orderin which to upgrade transitional environments, see Example Upgrade Paths from vCenter Server6.5 and 6.7 to vCenter Server 7.0 .vCenter Server Supported Upgrade MethodsGraphical User Interface (GUI) InstallerThe GUI installer provides a two-step upgrade method using an OVA file that you deploy, andthe vCenter Server appliance Management GUI. The first step deploys vCenter Serverappliance as an OVA file. The second step uses the vCenter Server Management GUI toconfigure the new appliance using the source deployment data.Command Line Interface (CLI) InstallerThe CLI installer provides advanced users with a CLI method for upgrading the vCenterServer appliance or migrating vCenter Server for Windows to an appliance. You can upgradeor migrate to a vCenter Server appliance using customized CLI templates.Migration Assistant Interface for Migrating vCenter Server for Windows to vCenter ServerapplianceWhen you migrate a legacy Platform Services Controller or vCenter Server for Windows to anappliance using the Migration Assistant interface. You can use either the GUI method or theCLI method to migrate the legacy Windows installation data to a target appliance. SeeOverview of Migration from vCenter Server on Windows to vCenter Server Appliance.Deprecated vCenter Server Deployment ModelsWhen upgrading or migrating from deprecated deployment models, you must first migrateyour deployment to a currently supported deployment model before attempting to upgradeor migrate it to a vCenter Server 7.0 deployment. For more information, see Moving from aDeprecated to a Supported vCenter Server Deployment Topology Before Upgrade orMigrationPatching and Updating vCenter ServerVMware, Inc.12

vCenter Server UpgradeA patch or update brings the vCenter Server 7.0 software up to the current, minor version. You can use the patching process to make minor upgrades to your 7.0 deployment. SeeDifferences Between vSphere Upgrades, Patches, Updates, and Migrations and Chapter 7Patching and Updating vCenter Server 7.0 Deployments.vCenter Server Upgrade CompatibilityThe upgrade to vCenter Server 7.0 affects other software components of the data center.Table 2-1.
