Charleston Region87 Branches 9 GroupsAtlanta Birmingham Charleston Columbia North Georgia Spartanburg Jacksonville Lake CIty PensacolaI’m pleased to tell you all that there has been plenty of activity in theCharleston region in the last six months. The Charleston region iscomprised of 87 locations stretching from South Carolina (Charleston,Columbia & Spartanburg groups) through Georgia and Alabama(Atlanta, North Georgia &Birmingham AL) down Southto the Northern Florida PanHandle (Jacksonville, LakeCity & Pensacola groups). Werecently purchased a property inLancaster, South Carolina thathad previously been an electricsupply house for over 40 years.Continuing our growth in SC, wealso started the permitting process to build new branch locations inWest Columbia and Sumter. We have owned the land for quite a fewyears and now feel the time is right to build our own custom buildingsat these locations.an interesting time, the final outcome was brilliant and I am sureGainesville will turn out magnificent once completed. We are also in the process of reopening a previously closed location,Middleburg, FL. It was closed just over a year ago, but with thebusiness in the area trending on a more positive note and the trafficflow continuing to increase, the decision was made to reopen thislocation. There is further expansion planned for the Charleston region over thenext 12 to 18 months (controlled expansion) - the best kind. Pleasekeep a look out for the news of new locations and new opportunities foreveryone, which will be sent out when the time is right. On a more leisurely note (if you can call golf leisurely in 90 degreeheat), the Florida groups (Jacksonville, Lake City & Pensacola) recentlyhad their first Customer Golf Appreciation day, which was a terrificsuccess, with 90 customers and vendors taking part. The word has gotaround and our Georgia & Alabama groups have also bitten the golfGeorgia has not missed out in the expansion, with a brand new branch bug, with their customer day scheduled for mid-September. Let’s hopeopening very close to Atlanta airport in June of this year (so close init doesn’t rain!fact that the windows in the building are specially made of three inchthick glass to ease noise levels). I’ll let you in on a secret – they donot work very well! We also completed a branch move in Alpharetta– moving to a larger building two blocks away and having the interiorcustom designed. More new buildings have been built in Valdosta, GAand St Mary’s, GA to bring our buildings up to the very high standardthat we set for our company owned properties. There’s never a dull moment in Florida either! The Gainesville branchwill be literally renovated from the ground up. New walls, roof, officesand trade counter will all be remodeled as the branch continues tooperate (and this is a busy branch)! We have already accomplishedthis at the Summerville, SC branch five years ago. Though it wasCES Golf Tournament Jacksonville Group5

Denver Region53 Branches 6 GroupsCalifornia Colorado North Colorado South Central Texas Dallas/Ft Worth HoustonCES - Scott TraceyScott, “Scooter” as his friends call him, originally from Chicago and a devoutBears and Cubs fan was a friend of the local Westinghouse lighting rep inDenver and was really not happy with his career as a paint salesman. It wasmissing something and he needed a spark! The rep introduced Scott to theBM and Sales Rep in the Commerce City branch and THAT WAS ALL ITTOOK! Scooter had the personality and energy that we knew was a winner!! Sohe decided to take a risk and change industries completely and come over toCES as an entry level warehouseman. Again, that’s all she wrote! Scott quicklyfollowed in the footsteps of the BM and sales rep as they were promoted andmoved up, so did he, TWICE in 2 years to become the Branch manager ofone of the most successful branches in Colorado. Since the recent slump inthe economy, Scooter has brought the branch back to its “glory days” and isnow matching the once record breaking months of the past!! Just like daysof old, it’s the people together that make us great! He says that working forCES has been the greatest experience and he loves it because it keeps his firegoing to keep achieving more and reaching to greater heights . on a morepersonal note, Scooter really enjoys the outdoors and so much that he recentlytook what some of us would consider as a once in a lifetime trip to Alaska. Hesaid it would be ok for us to share it with the rest of the CES family, so we aretaking him up on it. He went on a backpacking and halibut fishing trip, that’sdefinitely one for the memories!! The experience was unforgettable and sincehe survived an overnight visit outside his tent by the local Grizzly bears he isalso thankful that he is back home to tell all about it.Season KickoffCustomers and staff from the Dallas, Central TX and ColoradoGroups celebrated the kickoff of the 2013 College Footballseason by attending the Cowboy Classic at the AT&T Stadiumin Dallas on Saturday, August 31st, which featured LSU andTCU. There was a loud crowd of 80,230 with plenty of purple (apredominant color for both teams).LSU 37 – TCU 27CES Cedar Park RemodelA Change for the BetterIn the beginning the Cedar Park Branchlooked just like any other Supply house.White walls, blue and white checkeredfloors, mismatched shelves; we didn’tstand out by any means of the word. The store had looked the same since itopened in 2007. With new managementarising, more successful workers inthe store, and a passion for businessthriving throughout the store, a newchange was in order. Towards the end of2012, the Cedar Park Branch decided toremodel. Shortly after the New Year it wasdiscussed what was to occur during theremodel, and employees and suppliersalike are very pleased with the change.7

A totalof 10 branches stretch between north West Palm Beachto south Fort Lauderdale. Golden sandy beaches withwarm ocean currents beckons vacationers from acrossthe globe. Attached at the hip, you will find some of themost prestigious properties found in the world today. Someof these branches even had our President, Mr. ThomasMackie, early in his CES career working the trade counterand pulling orders!Since Broward County has long since seen the tail end ofthe residential boom, most of the work today is commercial.Although it is true to say builders always seem to squeezein another new development here and there.Wellington BranchWellington Branch sits 14 miles due west of the PalmBeaches. Opened in October of 2001 it has had its shareof ups and downs. The community grew very fast duringthe early 2000’s and got hit hard when the economicdownturn occurred. Wellington is known across thecountry for its Polo Pony’s. The horse communityregularly hosts the Polo World Championships. However, today we are back on track and building a solidbranch around several commercial electrical contractors.Just recently, we placed a portable container at the jobsite of the new Palm Beach Outlet mall. The site was anold shopping mall adjacent to the I-95 in central PalmBeach, which has been torn down and is being replacedwith 500,000 square feet of outlet shopping. The nextclosest outlet mall is 55 miles away, therefore will presentlocal shoppers with an astonishing array of quality brandnames to choose from.8

Membersof staff in Chapel Hill includeRobbie McNamara as branchmanager, Barry Carter as storesmanager, and Michael Shannonand Ian Beverly as warehouse/counter sales associates. Withthe exception of Michael, all ofthe Chapel Hill staff has beenemployed with City ElectricSupply for seven to eight years.Michael came on board inlate 2011. Robbie McNamararelocated to Chapel Hill asmanager in February of 2010,after stints in the Richmond Eastand Fuquay branches. Growthin the Chapel Hill branch hasincreased ever since. Little didwe know then that Robbie’sefforts, as well as the efforts ofhis staff, would result in a milliondollar sales month!Chapel Hill has grown itsbusiness by tapping into marketsegments that most of our Citybranches service includingcontractors, institutionalbusiness, service contractors, heating and air, as well as otherniche business. But in additionto these traditional marketsegments, Robbie had theforesight to develop a significantniche in the solar market and itsmany segments. Developmentof this segment didn’t happenovernight, with Robbie spendingmany hours educating himselfon this market and developingthe relationships necessary tocompete. His hard work hasobviously paid off, as well as hiscustomer first attitude.Even with the sales success ofthe Chapel Hill branch, Robbieand his team are working hardto diversify their customerbase, tapping into other marketsegments that can help thebranch increase gross profit. This is smartly being realized asnecessary with the large scalesolar business being so highlycompetitive. I applaud theirefforts. Congratulations againto Robbie, Barry, Michael, andIan. Hard work, competitivedrive, and exceptional customerservice, do pay off. Well doneChapel Hill.A Lesson Learned“If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” This was TomMurphy, Sales Representativeof the Macomb branch inMichigan’s mantra as itpertained to a certain chainof local furniture stores. Hededicated time on his calendarand consistently called uponthem. The chain’s 1,000,000square foot distribution hubwas located next door to oneof CES’s major competitors. However, that did not stopTom. With the support ofhis Branch Manager, ArtThienel, and their team, hisconsistent connection with thefurniture chain paid off. Thecompetitor never contactedthem in their 25-year businessrelationship and it fell apart.CES became their sole sourcefor emergency ballasts, plugmold, fluorescents and PARlamps. Later, when the chaindecided to aggressivelyexpand into the Great Lakesregion, they contacted Tomand CES for over 5,000LED Lamps and over 3.5miles of track and trackheads to illuminate threenew stores with six more tocome. Congrats on Tom’sperseverance taking thisaccount from an averagemonthly spending of less than 1,000 to over 135,000 permonth so far this year. Jobwell done!“Success is not final, failureis not fatal; it is the courageto continue that counts.” Winston ChurchillEmployee HighlightThe AscensionJoe Gurganus was recently appointed Branch Manager at theJacksonville, NC branch. CES Over SeasLondon, EnglandThe United Kingdom is where it all began back in 1951. Tom Mackie, bought an almost bankrupt wholesaler, City Electrical Factors, that atthe time resided in a horse stable in Coventry, England. With a, thenrevolutionary, model of performance based compensation, a vision ofmany small local branches rather than large centrally located branchand a never-ending desire to provide industry leading service, theformula for “City” around the world was born. CEF now consists ofover 400 branch locations in the UK and Ireland and is the 3rd largestelectrical wholesaler in the UK by turnover.Torbram Electric Supply (TES) has grown from humble beginnings with asingle branch based in Mississauga Ontario in 1991. Today, we have over60 locations across Canada. We attribute the success of our branchesto our commitment to provide customers with superior products, qualityservice and our highly valued Advantage Program. The TES AdvantageProgram is a unique offering of valued added free services that sets us apartfrom our competitors.Continuous improvement and innovation has been our model; listeningand learning from our customers, vendors and staff has become ourmandate. With the upcoming launch of the TES App - an industry first andthe unveiling of a new and improved website, we are ready to meet ourcustomers’ needs now and in the future.Toronto, CanadaThe Australian operation is growing fast, with sales increasing fromAU 4m in 2008 to over AU 16m in 2013. Branches nine and ten areon the horizon, with visa applications approved by the immigrationdepartment for two more existing UK Managers and their families to makethe journey around the world to escape the harsh UK winters for a warmerclimate in a wonderful part of the world to live.Sidney, Australia10With some tremendously profitable year end branch results releasedrecently in April, more branches opening soon, a well performingeconomy, and further opportunities for CEF employees to join the team,it is certainly an extremely exciting time for our business down under, andthis is only just the beginning.

Launches the CES MobileApp and the new CES Website30 in13The City Electric Supply StoryThe story began in Tampa, FL in1983. My late grandfather, TomMackie, had been in the electricalsupply business since 1938, asidefrom five years serving in the RoyalAir Force during World War II. Sincepurchasing his own single branchelectrical supply business in 1951, hehad grown the business to more than200 branches in the UK and Europe, as well as severalmanufacturing plants throughout the UK. Needlessto say, vacation was not something my grandfatherdid well. When he bought a home in South Florida toescape the English and Swiss winters, it was not longbefore enjoying the Florida sunshine was not enough tofill his day.So at 61 years of age, when most people are thinkingabout retiring, Tom went out in search of a smallelectrical wholesaler in Florida that he could buy andtry and replicate his model in the US. As the years wenton, the model proved that it could work on this sideof the Atlantic, My grandfather set his sites on makingthe US the largest portion of our family wholesalingbusiness, a pursuit that he never stopped workingtowards until he passed away in Florida in Januaryof 2012. Although he did not quite make it to see hisdream of CES becoming bigger than his 32 year moremature UK business, I am proud to announce that thisyear we are on track to make Tom’s dream a reality.City Electric Supply has now grown to more than374 locations across the US with more than 30 newbranches planned to open in the next 18 monthsand the group now consists of 880 branches and 56manufacturing operation around the world.Thank you to all of our loyal employees, suppliers, agents and customers without you none of this wouldhave been possible! We look forward to working withyou all to make the next 30 years as memorable as thelast!Thomas H. Mackie11

The maindifference is service. The larger players arenot quick at responding to requests forquotations or lead times on many products. Those companies which choose to operatesolely through an internet website are difficultto contact, except through emails.
