SPACE FORBIOINFORMATICS.Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree Programs

Bioinformatics.Bioinformatics is an exciting, truly interdisciplinary fieldthat brings ‘Life Sciences’ (biology, genetics, medicine, pharmaceutics) together with ‘Computational Sciences’(computer sciences, mathematics, and statistics). Graduates of the program will be able to analyze, interpret, visualize and simulate biological data using methodological approaches in computer sciences and mathematics. These methods and techniques play a key rolein understanding an organism’s molecular biology.I N T E R E S T I N G FAC TThe Johannes KeplerUniversity is the firstAustrian universityto offer a completeBachelor’s and Master’s degree programin Bioinformatics. Theprogram is international, interdisciplinary, and researchoriented. To The Point2MARIANA ŠATROVÁBachelor’s Student in BioinformaticsLISA ANDEXLINGERBachelor’s Student in Bioinformatics‘Studying in Budweis and Linz has been anamazing experience! The faculty members arefriendly and always willing to help. There is agreat sense of community. Everyone helps eachother and also has fun together.’‘Being able to study in two cities is a veryunique and interesting experience. You get toknow two cultures well and can call two citiesyour home. I made great friends and memoriesin both Linz and in Budweis.’

Educational Objectives,Career Prospects.Educational ObjectivesBioinformatics is the science of interpreting, visualizing, and simulating biological data by applying methodological approaches in ComputerSciences and Mathematics to gain an understanding of an organism’s molecular biology.Expertise in Bioinformatics opens the door toopportunities and applications in the followingfields:In biology, to understand cell functionIn medicine, to develop diagnostic and preventative procedures as well as treatmentsIn genetics, to find genetic causes of illnessesand study the evolutionary development ofhumansIn pharmaceutics, to develop new drugsThe research-oriented program focuses on current topics and provides students with individual attention and support services. Early on inthe program, students develop problem-solvingskills, focus on current scientific issues, and areindividually integrated into the institute’s academic activities.Job OpportunitiesThe academic degree program in Bioinformaticsis versatile, future-oriented, and interdisciplinary, preparing students for a variety of innovativeprofessions that require expertise and skills inboth life sciences and IT. Graduates can pursue careers in the pharmaceutical industry, thechemical field, in food technology, or at biotechnology companies. In addition, graduatescan pursue a career at companies that createsoftware for use in biology, physics, medicine orchemistry.3

Bachelor’s Degree Program. The Bachelor’s degree program in Bioinformatics isa cross-border, English-language program offeredtogether with the University of South Bohemia Budweis (USB), Czech Republic. Students complete thefirst year in Budweis, the second year in Linz, and canindividually schedule classes during the third year. After successful completion of the program, studentsare awarded two diplomas; one from each university (double degree). The Bachelor’s degree programis versatile and future-oriented, allowing students topursue future professions in exciting fields such aspharmaceutical research, bio-medical research, genetics, biotechnologies, etc.YO U R B E N E F I T SBroad, base-knowledge educationInterdisciplinary andinternational degreeprogamIndividual supportOutstanding careerprospectsEarn two degreesGraduates of the Bachelor’s program in Bioinformatics are eligible to enroll in the Master’s program inBioinformatics at the JKU Linz.Chart of Interdisciplinary Topics9%23%Computer enetics19%21%BioinformaticsSoft Skills12%4

Master’s Degree Program.Versatile and future-oriented, the Master’s degreeprogram prepares students to pursue exciting professions in pharmaceutical research, biomedical research, genetics, biotechnologies, data analysis, and softwaredevelopment. Students receive individual supportand are integrated into research activities early on bystarting graduate thesis work during project seminarsand focusing on current scientific tasks. The programfocuses specifically on recent machine learning methods that not only have a wide range of applications inbioinformatics, but have recently revolutionized theentire IT sector and are being viewed as key futuretechnologies by Google, Facebook, Microsoft andmany others. The Master’s program is also open to applicants who hold undergraduate degrees in Biology,Chemistry, Computer Sciences, Mathematics, Mechatronics, Physics, Statistics, or Business Informatics.YO U R B E N E F I T SInterdisciplinaryprogramFocus on currentresearch topicsOutstanding careerprospectsIndividual supportTo The Point8KRISTINA PREUER BSc MScGraduate in BioinformaticsLUM RAMABAJABachelor’s Student in Bioinformatics‘During my undergraduate studies in BiologicalChemistry I attended a lecture in Bioinformaticsand was so fascinated by the subject area thatI decided to enroll in the graduate degree program in Bioinformatics.
