Postgraduate English Language ProficiencyInternational English Language EquivalenciesRequirementsandOverviewThe University of Auckland (UoA) sets standards for English Language proficiency foradmission to the University for international applicants. All international applicants arerequired to provide satisfactory evidence of their proficiency in English.This could be an acceptable English language test, such as IELTS or TOEFL, or previousacademic study completed in English. 3.4Graduate olytechnicStudents must have completed a one-year full-time Graduate Diploma from a New ZealandUniversity, or Polytechnic Institution. Please note that this does not meet the Englishlanguage requirement for Doctoral programmes.Special Cases4.1Studies in English LanguageCompletion of a postgraduate qualification at least one year in duration and in the subjectof English language, from a university recognised by UK NARIC6 or NOOSR7. Note: The samevalidity period which is stated in Section 3 also applies here.4.2Engineering Applicants for the Postgraduate Certificate in Light MetalsReduction TechnologyCompletion of a bachelor’s degree or higher within the last 5 years in the English medium withevidence provided;OR,At least 3 years work experience in an English-speaking country or workplace where English is theprimary language. In this instance a written testimonial will need to be provided by the employeras evidence of the applicant’s English proficiency.4.3Teaching in EnglishExperience teaching at a tertiary level in the English medium, for two years or more, in arecognised university where English is the language of instruction. Please refer to the list ofacceptable countries in Section 3.2. Note: The same validity period which is stated in Section3 also applies here.4.4Law Applicants from NorwayStudents from Norway who are applying for postgraduate programmes in law will qualify foradmission and English equivalency provided they have obtained a pass (minimum 4) inVitnemal English.4.5The Occupational English Test6National Recognition Information Centre - UK7National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition – AustraliaApproved by Education Committee in June 2020 and effective for applications received on or after 1 August 2020,for commencement in Semester 1 2021 and onwards.7

An applicant’s eligibility for a waiver to sub-doctoralprogrammes will be assessed on a case-by-case basis at the time of application byApplications and Admissions and may require further supporting evidence. All applicantswho are awarded a waiver will be required to sit a Diagnostic English Language NeedsAssessment (DELNA) once enrolled in their course of study no later than two weeks afterthe start of their first semester. Any recommended enrichment/support must beundertaken. For Doctoral applicants seeking a waiver, a recommendation must be submittedby the Academic Head of the relevant academic unit to the Doctoral Admissions team. Allcases will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.5.1English Language Waiver ConditionsFor a waiver to be considered, an applicant needs a combination of at least two of thefollowing: 5.2Completion of a postgraduate qualification (at least one year in duration), or aBachelor degree from a University, or Polytechnic Institution, from one of thecountries listed in Section 3.2. This prior study will have been completed morethan 5 years before the start of your study at UoA.Completion of a Bachelor degree from a University, or Polytechnic Institution froma country not listed in Section 3.2. The medium of instruction during this studymust have been English and must not have been completed more than 2 yearsbefore the beginning of study at UoA.Published research in English where you were the lead researcher and presentedin English at conference(s).Evidence of extensive work experience in English.Marginal Test ScoresStudents who have not achieved the required scores in an IELTS, TOEFL or PTE Academictest may be considered for an English Language Waiver. To be considered for a marginaltest score waiver a student must satisfy at least one of the conditions listed in Section 5.1,as well as the score requirement listed below.Approved by Education Committee in June 2020 and effective for applications received on or after 1 August 2020,for commencement in Semester 1 2021 and onwards.8

IELTS: Where the student has submitted an overall IELTS result which is lower than theminimum requirement by 0.5-1.0 point, but the written and reading scores meet theminimum. That is, an IELTS overall speaking or listening score may be lower by 0.5-1.0point but an IELTS with a low writing or reading score will not be considered.TOEFL: Where the student has submitted an overall TOEFL score (internet- or paper-basedtest) which is lower than the minimum requirement by up to 2 points, but the written Englishscore meets or exceeds the minimum.PTE: Where the student has submitted an overall PTE result which is lower than theminimum requirement by up to 8 points, but the communicative score meets the minimum.Approved by Education Committee in June 2020 and effective for applications received on or after 1 August 2020,for commencement in Semester 1 2021 and onwards.9
