Issue 22sandiegoarchaeology.orgSpring 2019SDAC QUARTERLYTHE OFFICIAL E-NEWSLETTER OF THESAN DIEGO ARCHAEOLOGICAL CENTERDirector’s MessageIn this issueby Cindy StankowskiDirector’s Message1Public Programs2Collections3Archive & Library4Development5SDAC Information9Follow us online!Facebook: @SDArchCenterTwitter: @sdacInstagram: San DiegoArchaeological CenterSpring 2019If you have been checkingin on our Facebook page, you’ve seen the wonderfulbloom at the San DiegoArchaeological Center.Golden poppies, lupine,Clarkia, ceanothus, coastfiddleneck and sages areall looking gorgeous. Inaddition, for the past few weeks we’ve been seeing paintedlady butterflies flitting through the valley on their 7,500 milemigration. They often stop to sip nectar from the garden. (Theycertainly need all that energy.) A visitor came into today andsaid, “This is a photographer’s paradise!” So, if you don’t wantto face the crowds in the desert, stop by the Center forviewing. Extra points if you pull some weeds. They, too, arequite robust. Our newest exhibit, By Land and By Sea, explores thedifferent theories of how humans came to the New World. Theexhibit also has information of the discovery of the Folsom andClovis cultures. Whilst doing research for the exhibit, I found aphotograph of James R. “Ridgley” Whiteman, a 19-year-oldNative American and Eagle Boy Scout living in Clovis, NewMexico. He is the lad who discovered the Clovis Point inassociation with mastodon bones. He wrote tothe Smithsonian and connected with archaeologists, who latercame to Clovis to confirm the find. I believe that his imageinspired George Lucas and Steven Spielberg’s character, young Indiana Jones, in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.Young Indie comes upon some treasure huntersillegally ransacking a site and steals the objects back, stating,“These belong in the museum!” What do you think?Thank you for your continuing support of the San DiegoArchaeological Center.1

Issue 22sandiegoarchaeology.orgResearch Projectsby Jessica McPheters, Collections ManagerThe San Diego Archaeological Center has amission to promote the understanding of SanDiego County’s rich cultural history and thescience of archaeology through curation ofarchaeological collections, facilitation ofcollections-based research, cultural collaboration, and dissemination of research results to thescholarly and general public. Research is anintegral part of what we do here at the Center. The collections curated at the SDAC can beresearched and used to answer archaeologicalquestions on local and global levels. The SDAC has worked with many localorganizations and students to facilitate researchand collaborate on important topics. One suchcollaboration happened in September 2013,when the Center received a research grant tobring an international team to local sites in SanDiego to study bedrock and boulder features. Theproject included aerial drone mapping and 3-Ddigital modeling of the features.A wide variety of student research projects havebeen conducted at the Center over the years, using Center collections and/or researchequipment. Center staff members facilitatecollections-based research by helping to identify, provide access to, and monitor the use ofcollections materials.Spring 2019stratigraphy and chronology of habitation at theprehistoric Kumeyaay village of Ystagua inSorrento Valley by looking at SDAC collectionsthat correlate with those sites. She began bynarrowing down her interests and coming up withquestions that she thought would be relevant andinteresting to find the answers to. When askedabout her research, Katie replied, “I’ve alwayswanted to work in academic archaeology, solearning about the Center from my instructor atCity College, Dr. Timothy Gross, motivated me toconnect with this amazing local resource. Beingan intern at SDAC has given me the opportunityto do hands-on work with decades’ worth ofcollections, helping me to hone my researchdesign skills, practice artifact analysis, and buildmy confidence in my ability to plan and conduct aproject on my own. I am having a blast, and canthink of few better ways to grow as a student ofarchaeology and aspiring member of the field.”If you are interested in conducting a researchproject at the SDAC, please contactJessica McPheters atjmcpheters@sandiegoarchaeology.org.For more information, visit the Research pagehere. This semester, Katie Hoag, a student at SanDiego City College, is completing a researchinternship at the Center.
