As is theway of the world, some things have greatlychanged in the animal welfare world andothers things have remained the same.Each scenario comes with both goodand bad and depends a lot on individualperspectives.Two questions that I was askedmy very first day on the job continue tobe the most-asked questions today, nomatter what has changed.Shortly after I walked into theoffice and spoke with all of the shelterstaff, my office phone rang. A womanidentified herself (I’ll call her “Mrs. D.). Shewas furious because she had lots of birdfeeders in her yard and a neighbor’s cathad just come into her yard and killed abird. She said that happened a lot. Shedemanded I do something about it and dosomething right then! Sadly, all I could dois listen because she had already tried allof the suggestions I made. Mrs. D calledat least once a week for years until shepassed away. I dreaded those calls fromMrs. D because I understood why she wasso angry. She loved the wild birds thatcame to her feeder and it was just notright that her neighbor’s cat killed so manybirds.Problems with outside catshas been the number one consistentcomplaint about cats I have receivedthrough the years.
