Spring 2019 InformationOur CustomersWe would like to thank you for continuing your support as a local independent business. With continuedconsolidations in the industry, it is important to remember how we can help and provide high quality materials. As you know, we keep an ample inventory of grass seed and a range of fertilizers, chemicals, and erosion controlproducts on hand for when you need it.Seed Supply:We are pleased to say that our vigorous shopping efforts last fall has yielded some rather good material toprovide our customers this coming season. The seed industry has been going through some changes over the pastcouple of years, with some consolidation with production companies, environmental laws and the demand forquality farm land in Oregon. There continues to be land transitioning into production acres for tree nut crops. Thedown side to this is, lost acres to more permanent crops like tree nuts, will remove these acres from grass seedproduction acres during our lifetime. The seed industry has been moving to other areas like Minnesota and Canada to make up for the shortage ofproduction acres in Oregon and Washington. For the past few generations grass seed has been the perfectrotational crop for many types of agricultural crops. The industry has flourished to be home to over 80% of thegrass seed production in the entire world. The infrastructure in transportation, seed cleaning facilities, seedtesting labs, research centers, the family farms and supply relationships make this region very important to ourindustry. The species with the most supply pressure has been Tall Fescue. K-31 and Fawn have been very strong due toshortage in production the past two years along with non-existent carry over. We are pleased to say that ourshopping efforts have netted good supply on top rated varieties with clean seed tests. Common Creeping RedFescue is another crop with very short carry over and a small crop from last year. We would expect the price onthese species to only get stronger as we get closer to new crop in July and August.Perennial Ryegrass has been in good supply and will probably have stable pricing up to new crop with a number oftop-rated varieties in our warehouse already. Fine Fescues will continue to have strength through the seasonsince there is limited supply from last season. Again, we have very good varieties in house to cover our springseason. Last to mention is Kentucky Bluegrass. Common Kentucky Bluegrass has been strong through last yearwith a little softening at this time. Expect shortage of certain varieties, mostly due to poor quality and reducedproduction last season. To summarize, we believe that overall prices will be stable with a little strength in those varieties that will be shortthis season. Prices will be flat, and increase a few percent. There shouldn’t be any big surprises going into newcrop. Let’s hope for a better planting season than last year. We could use a normal spring, whatever that is.Thanks for your continued support.

Q & A ForumO.D.O.T. TE 24 FORMSOliger Seed Co. is an Ohio D.O.T. vendor and suppliescertified grass seed for D.O.T. projects. If a TE24(State certification document) is required for yourproject, it is essential that we are advised you needthe TE24 certification at the time you place yourorder. We recommend that any seed order requiring aTE24 certification be placed in advance of pick up soyou won’t have to wait while the certificate is beingprocessed. The State of Ohio requirements are not negotiableand we are not able to produce the paperwork oncethe seed leaves our warehouse. When placing your order, we require the followinginformation so the certification can be completed. No exceptions:1. Job number2. Type of seed mix3. Reference number. There is a 5.00 service charge per certificationrequested.Extend your planting season using a provenseeding method: Frost SeedingThis is a method where it is possible to achieve goodresults well after the regular planting season has longpassed. To realize good results, it will require advanceplanning and prep work when soils can still be workedin the prior fall season before soils freeze. This method essentially uses the forces of freezingand thawing to stratify the seed in the soil during latewinter to early spring. Once the seed is in place, nature will do the rest and once the soils havewarmed to the proper temperature and theconditions are proper for growth and establishment, the seed will germinate.Seed Inspection FeeYou may have wondered what theSeed Inspection Fee is on your invoice. The Ohio Department of Agriculturecollects this fee for the periodicrandom inspections, and testing of seeds for sale inthe State of Ohio. These inspections are to ensure the seed, whether astraight seed or mixed seed, meets or exceeds whatthe seed tag claims and is compliant with the Ohioseed law and regulations. Our company then files quarterly seed inspectionreports required by the State. We need quantities ofseed identified on invoices so that we can pay feesaccordingly. Knowing this should give you addedassurance that there is a state agency looking aftereach and every customer who buys seed in Ohio. Why is there a Fuel Service Charge?Due to the ever changing cost of fuel, our companymay charge a fuel service charge, as needed fordelivered orders to offset increased fuel costs. Some customers may ask why we don’t increase thecost of product to offset the fuel service charge? The answer is, a good part of our business is pick uporders at our location. Increasing the sell price wouldapply additional costs for customers when notneeded."Our goal is to deliver our product to our customersat the best rate we can, being fair to both thecustomer and our company."
