Jan08AT098-103.qxp12/6/20079:09 PMPage 98By Dale Karch & Todd SmithTraditional archery is in thegrip of nature’s law of inertia. It’s a body in motionand not only is it maintaining thatmotion, it’s gaining momentum.Traditional archery is becomingmore and more mainstream. Nolonger perceived as a novelty, longbows and recurves are finding theirway into prime-time hunting showsand all the top rated retail huntingmagazines. For this reason theentire traditional archery industry isbracing itself for another big year in2008.Throughout this last year we’venoticed a few distinct trends andgrowth “hot spots”. Traditionalarchers themselves always seem tobe in a state of transition, like individual planets in their own orbitsaround traditional archery as awhole, they move through the various offerings and levels available inthe sport. Traditional archery isunique in that it offers a full-circleapproach to archery. From the mostprimitive to the most modern andeverything in-between, the traditional shooter has unlimited choices.Interestingly enough, the shifts inbuying patterns seem to run true formost members of the traditionalarchery scene. Certain segments oftraditional gear ebb and flow like thetide. Based on what we’ve seen in2007 and what’s new for 2008, we’reconfident of another very stronggrowth year. Three specific seg-Brought to you by:Trends For 2008ments are on the rise for 2008, modern-traditional, primitive, and theyouth market.Of course we’llinclude specific products that haveeither been selling exceptionally wellor are new and promise to be goodperformers.Modern Traditional?Thatphrase almost seems counter intuitive, but it has become a mantra formany traditional bow shooters in theUSA. Following on theheels of the popular Bamboo Viper, the Venom enjoys instant credibility.Look for strong sales of this newlongbow from Martin Archery. The Howatt Hunter recurve hasbeen a top choice of traditionalshooters for generations. The extralength of the 62” Hunter is perfectfor those shots taken under pressure. The riser is black-dyed birch, with anattractive inset of bubinga at thegrip. The Hunter recurve has beenThe 2008 MartinVenom longbowis a longerversion of theBamboo Viperthat was newfor 2007.our most consistent selling recurveof all time and with this fresh newlook we predict another strong year.Last year the DAS Kinetic adjustable tiller rocked the traditional bowhunting community. Neverbefore had a bow been engineeredwith such precision and accuracypotential specifically for traditionalbowhunters. David Soza deservesthe credit for bringing to market abow so ahead of its time. The original 17 inch riser Dalaa combinedThe Howatt Hunterrecurve is a longrunning favoritefrom Martin, andsports a new lookfor 2008.Woodsman head.Wood Screw Adapters.3Rivers Weight Tubes.Beman MFX Classic shafts fletched with shield cut feathers.with efficient competition limbs forincredible performance in compact58 inch, 60 inch, and 62 inch recurvehunting bows. The Dalaa-17 gainedinstant acceptance as a proven performer on big game worldwide andalso turned heads in the 3-D circuit. For 2008 there’s a new Dalaa intown. The Dalaa-21 with its 21 inchriser bridges the gap between theultra-compact Dalaa-17 and thelonger FITA style risers like the Win &Win offerings and the Hoyt Medalist. The Dalaa-21 utilizes the same proprietary DAS limb design for bowlengths of 62 inch, 64 inch, and 66inch, perfect for those with longerdraw lengths or those who like thesilky-smooth draw of a longerrecurve. Anyone shooting ILF limbswill be pleased to know the Dalaa-21is available with an ILF pocket too. With the ILF pocket in place, any setof ILF limbs will fit. They’ll be able totake advantage of all the benefits ofthe Dalaa-21 riser and still use theirfavorite limbs.Carbon arrows continue to gainin market share in traditional circles. No longer is it taboo for a stick bowshooter to have carbon arrows in hisor her quiver. Most longbow andrecurve shooters do however like aheavier arrow. Most carbon arrows, even those built with the traditionalarcher in mind need a little boost toget to optimal mass weight. Weighttubes are the quick and easy answer. With just a year under their belt, ourweight tubes are really catching onwith traditional bowhunters. They’reeasy to install and equally distributethe weight the entire length of thearrow. Available in two diameters, one is made to fit 9/32” carbons likethe Easton Axis series and theBeman MFX Classic, and the otherfor standard 5/16” carbons likeCarbon Express, Gold Tip, and theEaston Epic. Choose from 3 grainsper inch, 5 grains per inch, and 8grains per inch to add some punchto your carbon arrow sales. Theseare manufactured and distributedthrough 3Rivers Archery exclusively.Speaking of carbon arrows, you’ll be hard pressed to find a prettier one that the Grizzly Stik fromAlaskan Bowhunting Supply. It’sour third segment with the most significant growth. We all know thefuture of our sport is our kids sowe’re excited. For the kids, there aretwo very noteworthy bows available, the new Shadow longbow from3Rivers Archery and the re-vampedX-200 from Martin Archery. The Shadow is a true deflexreflex longbow that packs a lot ofenergy into a small 60 inch package. It’s perfectly sized for kids and offersa multi-colored hardwood riser witha dished locator grip and radiusedshelf. It’s the spitting image of anadult custom bow. Kids will go nutsfor the Shadow! The 60 inch X-200 isn’t just forkids anymore. For a Made in theUSA, handcrafted recurve you’d behard pressed to find a better value. The new X-200 boasts a colorful laminated birch riser, while limbs oflaminated eastern hard maple andblack fiberglass will provide years offaithful service. Reinforced limb tipsnow accept any modern string material. The X-200 available in weightsfrom 25 pounds to 55 pounds is agood choice for anyone interested ina good deal on a handcrafted recurvebow, made by Martin’s traditionalbowyers in the old Damon Howattplant in Yakima, Washington.Woodsman broadheads rockedthe traditional archery world whenthey were first introduced manyyears ago. Easily recognized by theirlong lean profile they quickly earneda reputation for dramatic penetration and deadly wound channels. It’sno wonder they’re our best sellingbroadhead of all time. Even so, werecognized room for improvementand completely upgraded the manufacturing-grinding process and we’revery pleased with the results. Neverhas the factory grind on aWoodsman been so precise andsharp right out of the package. Sure, bowhunters still have to touch themup with a bit of final honing beforeheading into the field, but the foundation is now there for a perfectlybalanced broadhead that flies truefrom any bow.Though not new in concept, single bevel broadheads like the Grizzlyhave been in the spotlight lately.Extensive testing has shown that single bevel broadheads, whenmatched with the proper wing feathers, actually rotate as they penetrate! This rotation increases the effectiveness of 2-blade broadheads. They’reblowing through bone rather thanwedging in, and leaving a “J” shapedexit wound that bleeds more freelythan the straight slit normally seenwith double-bevel 2-blade broadheads. Perhaps you’ve heard of Dr.Ed Ashby’s work, perhaps not, butthe results speak for themselves.Single-bevel broadheads like theGrizzly are making quite a name forthemselves and we anticipate a largelift in sales this year.New books and DVD’s are alwaysGrizzly broadheads arebeveled from one side.100Circle 149 on Response Card

Ifyou do your part, you should haveshaving sharp broadheads.Another sharpening system thathas really impressed us is the selfaligning KME system. As the KMEsharpener glides on its roller basethe rotating clamp pivots maintaining perfect blade-to-stone alignmentto produce true razor-sharp broadheads. You can sharpen fixed twoblade broadheads and any replacement blades or bleeders. Recently there havebeen a bunch of new survival andprimitive skills books released andthe traditional community is gobbling them up. When it comes toprimitive skills, you may shoot acompound but still have an interestin knowing how to build a fire by friction, or how to set a Paiute trigger ona deadfall. Primitive skills booksappeal to a wide segment of thearchery industry. Place a few in yourshop and test them. You might besurprised. With the overwhelming acceptance of the Easton Axis and theBeman MFX Classic shafting camethe need for 9/32 screw-in points. We had a difficult time finding themso we decided to have them made. Now we’ve got them in good supplyin weights of 100 grains, 125 grains, and 145 grains. If you’re selling a lotof the Easton Axis and Beman MFXcarbon arrows you’ll want to haveplenty of these on hand. There are two main reasons traditional shooters use woodscrewadapters. First, they like woodarrows but want the convenience ofusing screw-in points. Woodscrewadapters offer just that. You cut tolength and taper your wood arrowslike always but instead of gluing on apoint you’re gluing on an adapterthat accepts screw-in points. Nowswitching from field points to broadheads is quick and easy. The secondNew 9/32 inch point for Easton Axisand Beman MFX shafts.reason is to get a little extra length onwood arrows. Since the threadedfemale portion of the adapterrequires some length, folks with 31”draws that previously couldn’t usewood arrows now can. That littleextra length can make all the difference.I’m not sure any of us, no matterhow old, can remember the last timeZwickey Broadheads introduced anew head. Well they just did! It’scalled the No-Mercy and it’s a totallynew design. At first glance it resembles a slimmed down version of thevenerable Delta, but on close inspection you’ll see that Jack Zwickeyimplemented subtle changes. Thereason it has taken so long is thatJack refuses to release a new productuntil it has his blessing. Everyone atZwickey Archery is excited at thepotential of this new broadhead. Ifyou’re a fan of 2-blade broadheads, and especially if you’re a long timeZwickey fan, take a close look at theNo-Mercy. Better yet, try a pack andsee for yourself why the sun neversets on Zwickey broadheads.Every archer needs a target andif they shoot broadheads a broadhead target too. You probably haveyour favorites but we’ve settled ontargets from Morrell. The top sellersare their Yellow Jacket targets both ina field point and broadhead model. In 2008 you’ll be able to pick up apre-packaged set. One field pointand one broadhead target packagedtogether. We’ve found that theMorrell targets are excellent qualityand a good value. That will get you started for a bigyear in traditional archery.
