Note that theshock resistant material (MIL-M-14)used for housing and cover islight gray.TerminalStudsMountingBlockMountingStuds These molded case Navy circuitbreakers provide both overloadprotection for conductors andshort circuit protection for allcircuit elements such as conductors, motors and starters. Theyalso serve as manual disconnecting means as well as circuitprotectors. All Eaton’s Cutler-Hammer circuit breakers in this ProductGuide meet applicable Navyspecifications for “hi-shock.”These manually operated breakers are rated from 5 to 4,000amperes with interrupting ratings from 1,500 to 150,000amperes. (See “Selector Guide”on Page 2 for ratings and Navyspecifications.) (Terminal block attachedat line end of breaker and removedfrom load end.)Cutler-Hammer Navy circuitbreakers retain all the featuresof standard commercial typeAB DE-ION breakers listed onPage 4 under “standard features.”Built to Navy specifications, theyincorporate the following Navyrequirements: Specific Navy Features Qualified Products — AllNavy circuit breakers undergorigorous qualification testingto MIL-C-17361 and are listedon the associated QualifiedProducts List issued by thefederal government. (ACB’sper MIL-C-17587, ALB-1’s perMIL-C-17588, and AQB’s perMIL-C-17361.) Shock-Resistant MoldedCase — Housing consists ofrear base section and covermolded of glass alkyd material. This material, reinforced glassfilled thermosetting plastic, has very high mechanicalstrength (shock and impactresistance), is both fire andmoisture-resistant andprovides excellent dielectriccharacteristics.Anti-Shock Device — Inertiaweight over center pole holdstrip bar in latched positionunder shock conditions butdoes not prevent thermalor magnetic trip units fromfunctioning on overload andshort circuits. Note:Interchangeable trip units are notavailable in the A101, ALB-1, A50or A51. Shock and VibrationResistant — Navy circuitbreakers are all tested toMIL-S-901 for Hi ImpactShock, and MIL-STD-167 forMechanical Vibration. Thistest ensures that the circuitbreakers will operate properlyin the Naval shipboardenvironment.EMI Resistant — All Navycircuit breakers with ElectronicTrip Units (ETUs) are tested forelectromagnetic immunity andemissions per MIL-STD-461and -462 to eliminateinterference from radiated orconducted EMI.50 C Calibrated — Thermalmagnetic circuit breakers arecalibrated for 50 C ambienttemperature. The calibrationof circuit breakers with ETUsare inherently unaffected byambient temperature.Interchangeable Trip Units— All thermal and magnetictrip units in AQB circuitbreakers are encased insealed, self-contained unitsthat are interchangeable withother trip units of differentampere ratings within thesame frame size.Plug-in Connectors —All Navy circuit breakers aredesigned for optional moldedplug-in bases in a variety ofstyles. Smaller breakers(ALB-1, A50 and A51) mustbe used with the associatedbases. Other MCCBs can beconverted for direct cable orplug-in mount. Plug in basesare available in a variety ofstyles depending upon thecircuit breaker type. See thespecific circuit breaker stylefor available mounting basesand outline drawings.Note:All A101, A50 or A51 breakershave plug-in connectors. Front orrear connectors determined bymounting base selected.ALB breakers have a clampterminal on the line end toreceive panelboard bus stabprojections. Interrupting Ratings to150 kA — Navy circuitbreakers are available withinterrupting ratings up to150 kA, many using modernfuseless current-limitingtechnology. Circuit breakersrated 100 ampere and belowmust be used with associatedcurrent limiting fuses toachieve high interruptingcapacity.Circuit Breakers for Naval Shipboard Use PG01218003E—January 2010 www.eaton.com3

Fungusmoisture resistant treatmentsfor severe atmospheres areavailable as modifications. Positive Position Indication— Position of handle alwaysindicates ON, OFF, orTRIPPED.Free-Bearing Surfaces —Dissimilar metals are usedto prevent bearing wear andeliminate sticking.DE-ION Arc Quenchers —This Eaton developmentconsists of a series of gridplates mounted in parallelbetween supports ofinsulating material. The slotsin the steel plates are directlyover the contacts and drawthe arc from the movingcontact up into the dividedchamber where it is confined, divided, and extinguished. Silver Alloy Contacts —Special silver alloy contactsprevent sticking and welding, increase contact life andinsure low resistance whencarrying full-rated load.Quick-Make, Quick-BreakOver Center ToggleMechanism — Providesquick, positive action inopening and closing ofcircuits, prevents “teasing”of contacts and reducescontact wear.Complete Interpole Barriers— Ensure against internalflashovers when faults occur.Common Trip — Two andthree-pole units have insulatedcommon trip bar that opensall poles simultaneously whenan overload occurs on any one, thus eliminating possibility uit Breakers for Naval Shipboard Use PG01218003E—January 2010 www.eaton.com Tested Accuracy — Alltripping members have groundand polished latch surfacesheat treated to prevent gallingor later distortion. All parts aretested in temperaturecontrolled atmosphere toensure correct calibration andperfect mating. Each breakeris thoroughly tested.Factory Sealed — Smallerbreakers are factory sealedto prevent tampering withcalibration. Interchangeabletrip units are individuallysealed.

Timeless ImagesApplicationDesigned primarily for circuitprotection, Cutler-Hammer Navycircuit breakers are used in lighting and power panels, switchboards, distribution centers andload centers aboard ship. Thephotograph above illustrates theuse of molded case circuit breakers and air circuit breakers in atypical Navy switchboard.General OrderingInformationWhen ordering Cutler-HammerNavy circuit breakers, consult thecheck list below to make sureyou have provided correct information. You should specify:1. Quantity, Cutler-HammerPart Number and NationalStock Number of:a. Complete breaker orframe, trip unit, fuses(where required) and/orattachments whereavailable.b. Plug-in mounting block orfront connecting cableterminals.c. Spare breakers or tripunits. (Usually onerequired for each 10 unitsor fraction thereof ofeach current rating.)d. Technical Manuals.2. ShipmentSpecify transportationmeans, method of packaging and preservation, andrequired shipping date.3. DrawingsSpecify quantity of outlineor master plan drawingsrequired.4. InspectionIndicate whether Government Source Inspection (GSI)is required at factory prior toshipment. This shouldappear as a “shipping note.”Marine BreakerApplicationsEaton also manufactures a complete family of marine circuitbreakers for Navy non-combatantships, U.S. Coast Guard vessels,Military Sealift Command vessels, commercial vessels, offshoredrilling rigs, etc. These marinebreakers are different from highshock MIL-spec breakers. Theymeet any or all of various marinespecifications such as ABS,USCG-CFR46, IEEE45, UL 489Supplements SA and SB,UL 1066 Supplement SA, Lloyd’sof London, DNV.
