ANNUAL READERSHIP STUDY SHOWSGOOD NEWS FOR SMALL PAPERSThe National NewspaperAssociation, working with theresearch arm of the ReynoldsJournalism Institute at theMissouri School of Journalism is completing its fifth yearof research on the readershippatterns of America’s community newspapers.The data indicates fairlyconsistent findings: 81 percent of thosesurveyed read a localnewspaper each week. Those readers, on average,share their paper with 2.36additional readers. Community newspaperreaders spend about 40minutes with their paper. 73 percent read most orall of their communitynewspaper. Nearly 40 percent keeptheir community newspapermore than a week(shelf life).Did you know that there are about 8,000 communitynewspapers in America that fit that description?Did you know that 80 percent of America’snewspapers have a circulation of 15,000 or less?Did you know that 86 million Americans readthose community newspapers every week?53 percent say they neverread local news online (only12 percent say they readlocal news often to veryoften online).
