Sikorsky UH-60 Component and Systems OverviewEaton’s Aerospace Group Product CapabilitiesThe UH-60 Black Hawk is afour-bladed, twin-engine,medium lift utility helicoptermanufactured by SikorskyAircraft Company. The BlackHawk’s mission is to provideair assault, general support,aeromedical evacuation,command and control andspecial operations support tocombat, stability and supportoperations.The Black Hawk is a utilitytactical transport helicopterthat replaces the UH-1 “Huey”.The versatile Black Hawkhas enhanced the overallmobility of the Army, due todramatic improvements introop capacity and cargo liftcapability, and will serve asthe Army’s utility helicopterfor years to come. An entire11-person, combat-equippedinfantry squad can be liftedin a single Black Hawk andtransported faster than inpredecessor systems, in mostweather conditions. With amaximum allowable grossweight of 22,000 lbs (9,979kg), the Black Hawk canreposition a 105 mm Howitzer,it’s crew of six, and lift up to30 rounds of ammunition in asingle lift. The aircraft’s criticalcomponents and systems arearmored and/or redundant,and its airframe is designed toprogressively crush on impactto protect the crew andpassengers.The long, low profile of theUH-60 was designed to meetthe Army’s requirementfor transporting aboard aC-130 Hercules. Equippedwith advanced avionics andelectronics for increasedsurvivability and capability,the Black Hawk is a ruggedand extremely durablehelicopter that providesenhanced safety for militaryoperations.2EATONEaton is a recognized leaderin the aerospace industry andis a key supplier of hydraulic,fuel, motion control and enginesolution products on theUH-60. With this cutting edgetechnology, Eaton provides abroad array of products.Eaton supplies a number ofhydraulic products for theUH-60 that provide, store, and/or control the aircraft’s hydraulicpower. These products includethe auxiliary power unit (APU)start valve, the brake transfervalve, the brake mastercylinder, the pitch lock shutoff valve, a hydraulic manifoldassembly, the APU startermotor, and the standard winchmotor. On the UH-60M “Flyby-Wire” (FBW) configuration,Eaton also provides twohydraulic pump modules, eachof which consists of a hydraulicpump and a reservoir; agearbox driven hydraulic pump;a hydraulic heat exchanger, anda ground checkout motorpump.Eaton manufactures a varietyof engine solution componentsused throughout the UH-60,both on the airframe and onthe engines. They includeengine and transmission oildebris monitoring sensors(chip detectors); oil levelsight gauges on the maintransmission, intermediategear box and tail rotor gearbox; pressure indication andmonitoring sensors; the tailwheel lock actuator; the tailrotor index actuator; andthe pedal adjust actuatormechanism.Eaton’s products on the UH-60include Aeroquip self-sealingquick disconnect couplings,frangible connectors andvarious hose assemblies perAS1339, MIL-DTL-25579 andAS620/AS1227 standards.Aerospace Group C5-30D February 2015Other conveyance products onthe helicopter are various sealsused in the T700-GE-701 seriesengines, including the starterseal, fuel control seal, gear boxmating-ring seal, and the fuelbooster pump seals.Eaton also manufactures andsupplies fuel components forthe UH-60. These productsinclude a pilot valve and thedefuel valve for the externalfuel tanks.In addition to systems andcomponents for the UH-60community, Eaton also providescustomer service and supportworldwide. Sikorsky UH-60 Key System ComponentsZapper Electric ChipDetectors (Transmissions)Hose AssembliesSelf-Sealing Quick DisconnectCouplingsFrangible ConnectorsEaton provides the Zapper electric chip detectors thatincorporate a capacitor circuitthat discharges an energy pulsethrough conductive debris thatbridges the chip detector gap,causing enough local heating tomelt away small, normal weardebris or “fuzz” and open thegap, similar to the blowing ofa fuse. If the discharge currentreopens the circuit, the systemreturns to the monitoring mode.If the debris is too large to burnoff, it is considered significantdebris and a cockpit chip lightwill illuminate and remainilluminated until the debris iscleared manually. The latestversions of these chip detectorsalso incorporate a Built-In-Test(BIT) feature wherein the entirechip detector system is testedupon helicopter start-up.Eaton’s Aeroquip hoseassemblies are utilizedextensively throughout theUH-60 aircraft. The assembliescan be found in the hydraulicsystem, the fuel system andthe lube oil system. Eatonprovides 3,000 psi (20684kPa) stainless steel braidedTeflon hose assemblies perAS1339, 1500 psig (10342 kPa)rated Teflon hose assembliesper MIL-DTL-25579, 601/AE701 fuel hose assembliesper MIL-DTL-83797 and theAE502 ballistic self-sealing hoseassemblies. Eaton’s designationof product for the hydraulicsystem is the AE246 and 666series hose assemblies. Thesuction side of the hydraulicsystem also uses AE641convoluted Teflon hose perAS620/AS1227.Four types of Eaton Aeroquipself-sealing quick disconnectcouplings, all of which arerated at 3,000 psi (20684kPa), are used on the UH-60.These couplings provide quickconnection/disconnection andall have positive action lockingvalves that open simultaneouslyto prevent fluid loss duringconnection or disconnection.These valves have no cavitiesto trap air, dirt or moisture. The145/155 series couplings are usedwhen connecting the groundsupport equipment to the aircraft,and the 3200 series couplingsare used for the brake andlanding gear strut connections.Modular couplings certified toSikorsky Standard SS65 areused in the flight control systemfor main servo and tail rotorservo connections, and modularcouplings qualified to SikorskySource Control drawings for thetail fold connections.A number of Eaton Aeroquipfrangible connectors are usedthroughout the UH-60’s fuelsystem. Frangible connectorsare utilized on the aircraftto provide the best possibleprotection in times of criticalneed - in the event of a crash.They are specifically designed tobreak at controlled locations onimpact in order to shut off fuelflow from fuel lines or tanks.As such, they greatly increasethe probability of survivability offlight personnel and/or minimizethe loss of assets by reducingthe likelihood of post-crash fires.Pressure SwitchesSealsFull Flow Debris MonitorSight Plugs & GaugesEaton supplies highly reliableand very robust pressureswitches that are used on theT700 series engines and onthe UH-60 landing struts (shockabsorbers). These switches areused for pressure indication and/or monitoring.Eaton is the source for a numberof seals used on the T700-GE-701engine, gearbox and fuel boosterpump powering the UH-60. Amongthe seals Eaton provides are thestarter seal, fuel control seals, ringmating gearbox seals, fuel boosterpump seals, and the No. 1 andNo. 5 main shaft bearing seals.Eaton’s Tedeco full flow debrismonitor for the T700 enginecontains a chip detector andintegral screen assembly. Whenferrous debris bridges the chipdetector’s gap, a “chip light”is illuminated on the mastercaution panel. The screenassembly helps to capture andretain the metallic debris for usein particle analysis if needed todetermine its source.Various types of sight gauges, bothrace track and plug styles, are usedon the UH-60. Sight “plugs” areused on both the intermediate andtail rotor gear boxes to enable thelubricating oil level to be determined.“Race track” style gauges areused on the main transmission andengine lube oil reservoirs.4EATONAerospace Group C5-30D February 2015

Awide range of speed and loadvariations are available forapplications requiring lightweight, high reliability, anda small envelope. Featuresof these actuators includeelectromagnetic interference(EMI) filtering and switchtransient attenuation; limitand indicator switches; and ahigh strength cover in order tominimize sand/rock damageduring landing.Eaton’s Vickers standardwinch drive motor is a bentaxis hydraulic motor providingbi-directional mechanical shaftpower to drive the rescuehoist reel.The Eaton ground checkoutmotorpump for the UH-60MFly-By-Wire Black Hawk variantoperates under AC electricalpower and serves as a hydraulicpower source for the hydraulicsystem(s) while on groundwithout having to operate theT700 turbine engine. This ACmotorpump is a derivativeproduct with many years ofreliable service.Eaton’s heat exchanger is avane motor design that makesthe unit compact and reducesweight. It is designed to displaceheat from the hydraulic fluidallowing for cooler operation andincreased reliability.Hydraulic Auxilary Power Unit(APU) Starter MotorHydraulic Pump Module(UH-60M Fly-by-Wire)Gearbox DrivenHydraulic Pump(UH-60M Fly-by-Wire)Pilot ValveUsing hydraulic pressure storedin the APU start accumulator,Eaton’s APU starter motor isused to start the APU.Eaton’s integrated design ofpump and reservoir reduces theweight and space requirment.A variable displacement pumpprovides flow at wide variety ofduty cycles.Eaton’s gearbox mountedhydraulic pump comes fromthe long line of highly reliablevariable displacement pumpsand provides hydraulic power toSystem 3 of the UH-60M Fly-ByWire Black Hawk variant aircraft.Eaton’s pilot valves haveproven reliability throughmature technology.
