From IMdB: “ForrestCarter, the author of the controversial memoir (now recognizedas a work of fiction) The Education of Little Tree, was the penname of Asa Earl Carter.a rabid segregationist who was aninfamous racist propagandist in the 1960s. A leader of the WhiteCitizens Council (a group dedicated to opposing desegregationand one that was generally considered to be a front group for theKu Klux Klan) of North Alabama, Carter was the head of a"klavern" of the Ku Klux Klan. He was an unofficialspeechwriter for segregationist Governor George Wallace, thesegregationist governor of Alabama and candidate for thePresidency (1968, '72). Asa Earl Carter wrote white supremacistliterature, and was a major contributor to The Southerner, awhite-supremacist publication that he edited and published firstunder the aegis of the racist White Citizens Council. Originallyaccepted as an actual work by a Cherokee Indian, The Educationof Little Tree ranks as one of the great literary hoaxes ofAmerican literature. Taking the pen of name Forrest Carter, hepublished two Westerns, including The Rebel Outlaw: JoseyWales . After the Eastwood film was released, the New YorkTimes revealed that "Forrest Carter" was actually Asa EarlCarter, the segregationist. At the time it was fashionable amongsome critics, in line with Paulene Kael’s criticism of the moviestar/director, to portray Eastwood as a "fascist," and Carter'souting was more likely made to embarrass Eastwood rather thanto out Asa Earl Carter.Robert Daley has 17 producer credits, all of them withEastwood: 1980 Any Which Way You Can, 1980 Bronco Billy,1979 Escape from Alcatraz, 1978 Every Which Way But Loose,1977 The Gauntlet, 1976/I The Enforcer, 1976 The Outlaw JoseyWales, 1975 The Eiger Sanction, 1974 Thunderbolt andLightfoot, 1973 Magnum Force, 1973 Breezy, 1973 High PlainsDrifter, 1972 Joe Kidd, 1971 Dirty Harry, and 1971 Play Mistyfor Me.Jerry Fielding (b. The book was firstpublished as an autobiography, a touching tale of a Cherokee boyraised by his loving grandparents in the hills of the AppalachianMountains. Readers responded to the naturalist themes andIndian spirituality of the book and it became an instant hit. Thetitle helped to spark an interest in Native American literaturewhich has since blossomed into its own genre. However, the titlehas also sparked decades of heated debate and controversy. In the years since its publication, and the death of itsenigmatic author, this title has gone from the top of critics lists tothe bottom, but no amount of bad press seems to hurt its sales. Sowhat's all the hubbub? Well, it would seem that the book's authorhas a past as an outspoken, professional racist. Forrest Carter, author of Outlaw Josey Wales and The Education of Little Tree, was first known as Asa "Ace" Carter. Always a talented writer,in the 1960s he lent his wordsmithing skills to George Wallace, and is credited with the infamous, "Segregation now!Segregation tomorrow! Segregation forever!" Other inquiriesinto Asa's past connect him with racist publications and theKKK. However, in the 1970s, after losing the race for Alabamagovernor, Asa moved to Florida, changed his name to Forrest (anhomage to Nathan Bedford Forrest, a Confederate general), andbegan to write genre fiction. And so we come to the central question: so what? Doesit matter? After all, the book is fiction, and as such, the questionof merit becomes a personal one. Fiction, an imaginativecreation, is by its nature interpretive. The meaning and merit ofthe work becomes individual—the response of each reader to thework's themes and characters. So the question is: does theauthor's life really matter to you?One issue which complicates the debate is the fact thatthis book -- the touching story of a Cherokee boy who comes ofage, learning about the good and the bad of life through a warmrelationship with his grandparents and abbrasive experienceswith white culture -- was initally marketed as an autobiography. This has since been corrected and the book is now sold as fiction, but when evaluting the cultural worth of the work, this detail isnoteworthy. It would also seem that, upon closer inspection, theauthor hasn't abandoned his earlier convictions. Like his previouswork, Outlaw Josey Wales, this book has a palpable antigovernment stance. In a story about Native American life this isnot entirely unheard of; after all, Native people, among them theCherokee, were some of the first victims in a history of ignorantand intolerant colonial and US government policy. In the end,Little Tree and his family are victimized by white society and thegovernment, and so it would seem to be to their benefit that theylive separate .segregated -- be it in the Mountains or off in "theNations." Interestingly, it was this same paternalistic theorywhich fueled Andrew Jackson's fire in passing the IndianRemoval Act that lead to the Trail of Tears. But again, does it matter? Are those themes relevant ifthe reader derives different meaning from the work? LeniRiefenstahl's photographs and films were pro-Nazi and promotedthemes of racial purity and eugenics. But despite that, she was atalented filmmaker and photographer. At what point do weseparate the art from the artist, the work from its context? TheEducation of Little Tree is a great book. I was moved to tears thefirst time I read it, and when I first learned of the author's past Iwas angry and hurt, but I still like the book.I would argue that the book has actually made anincredibly positive impact. It wasn't long ago that books andfilms filled with blatant sterotypes of savage Indians (played bywhite actors in red paint) was the norm. The mere fact that thistitle has generated so much debate and discussion regarding theplight of Indians in American popular culture is a positive stepforward. Personally, I think that this is a great book, both for thethemes of culture and life that the author himself addresses, andfor the heated historical and cultural debate which has grown outof it.

Eastwood—THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES—6CLINT EASTWOOD, from The St. James Film DirectorsEncyclopedia. Ed Andrew Sarris. Visible Ink,Detroit/NY/Toronto/London, 1998, entry by Andrew Tudor.American. Military Service Drafted into USArmy 1950 .Career Under contract with Universal 1954-55;sporadic work in film, late 1950s; played Rowdy Yates in TVseries Rawhide, 1959-65; went to Europe to make three highlysuccessful westerns with Sergio Leone, 1965; returned to US,1967; formed Malpaso Production company and directed firstfilm, Play Misty for Me, 1971; first effort as producer, Firefox ,1982; mayor of Carmel ,CA, 1968-88. Awards Chevalier desArts et des Lettres, France, 1985 Fellowship of British FilmInstitute, 1993.In 1992, after almost forty years in the business, ClintEastwood finally received Oscar recognition. Unforgiven broughthim the awards for Best Achievement in Directing and for BestPicture, along with a nomination for Best Actor. Indeed, thisstrikingly powerful Western was nominated for no fewer thannine Academy Awards, Gene Hackman collecting BestSupporting Actor for his performance as the movies ruthlessmarshall “Little Bill” Daggett, and Joel Cox taking the Oscar forediting. It seems appropriate, therefore, that this film, whichbrought him such recognition, should end with the inscription“Dedicated to Sergio and Don.” For without the intervention andinfluence of his two “mentors,” directors Sergio Leone and DonSiegel, it is difficult to imagineEastwood achieving his presentrespectability, let alone emerging asthe only major star of the modern erawho has become a better director thanhe ever was an actor. That is not to belittleEastwood, who has always beengenerous in crediting Leone andSiegel, and who is certainly far morethan a passive inheritor of theirdirectorial visions. Even in hisRawhide days of the 1950s and early19060s he wanted to direct; more thanonce Eastwood has told of hisattempts to persuade the series’producers to let him shoot some of theaction rather more ambitiously than asthe TV norm. Not surprisingly, theywere reluctant, but they did in the endallow him to make trailers forupcoming episodes. He was not totake on a full-fledged directorialchallenge until 1971 with Play Mistyfor Me, but in the intervening years he had become a massivebox-office attraction as an actor, first with Leone in Europe in thethree famous and founding “spaghetti westerns,” and then in aseries of films with Siegel back in the United States, mostsignificantly Dirty Harry. It is not easy to untangle the respective influences of hismentors. In general terms, because they both contributed to theformation of Eastwood’s distinctive screen persona, they helpedhim to crystallise an image which, as a director, he would oftenuse as a foil. The Italian Westerns’ “man with no name,” and hismore anguished urban equivalent given expression in DirtyHarry’s eponymous anti-hero. have provided Eastwood withwell-established and economical starting characters for so manyof his performances. In directing himself, furthermore, he hasused that persona with a degree of irony and distance.Sometimes, especially in his Westerns, that has meant leaningtoward stylization and almost operatic exaggeration (High PlainsDrifter, Pale Rider, the last section of Unforgiven), though rarelyreaching Leone’s extremes of delirious overstatement. On otheroccasions, it has seen him play on the tension between theseemingly assertive masculinity of the Eastwood image and thestrong female characters who are so often featured in his films(Play Misty for Me, The Gauntlet, Heartbreak Ridge, and in partat least, The Bridges of Madison County). It is, of course, notoriously difficult to both direct and star in a movie. WhereEastwood has succeeded in that combination (not always thecase) it has depended significantly on his inventive building onthe Eastwood persona. It is important to give Eastwood full credit for hisinventiveness in any attempt to assess his work. His better filmsas a director have a richness to them, not just stylistically—though in those respects he has learned well from Leone’sconcern with lighting and composition and from Siegel’s waywith in-frame movement, editing, and tight narration—but also amoral complexity which belies the one-dimensionality of theEastwood image. The protagonists in his better films, like JoseyWales in The Outlaw Josey Wales,Highway in Heartbreak Ridge, Munny inUnforgiven, even Charlie Parker in theflawed Bird are not simple men either intheir virtues or their failings. Eastwood’sfondness for narratives of revenge andredemption, furthermore, allows him todraw upon a rich generic vein inAmerican cinema, a tradition with abuilt-in potential for characterdevelopment and for evoking humancomplexity without giving way to artfilm portentousness. In these respects, Eastwood isthe modern inheritor of traditionalHollywood directorial values, onceepitomised in the transparent style of aJohn Ford, Howard Hawks, or JohnHuston (himself the subject ofEastwood’s White Hunter, Black Heart),and passed on to Eastwood

Indians, their country’s films were a joke or a source of embarrassment. Few Indian films were shown abroad, except to expatriate communities; on the rare occasions they were, as Ray wrote in a 1948 article, “even out best films have to be accepted with the gently apologetic proviso that it is ‘after all an Indian film.’”
