Theirrepertoire consisted of marches, arrangements of popular music, hymns, and transcriptions oforchestral and operatic works.“Echoes of 1869” includesthree movements, which canbe performed independentlyas well as together as a singlepiece. The first movement, entitled “Quickstep,” is basedon two quickstep marchesfound in the band books of the26th North Carolina RegimentalBand: “Twinkling Stars AreLaughing” and “Annie of theVale.” The second movementis based on the hymn “JesusKeep Me Near the Cross” whichwas composed in the year 1869.The third movement is basedon popular songs from the timeperiod and includes, “Shoo Fly,”“Little Brown Jug,” and “Listento the Mockingbird.” The latterbeing particularly appropriatesince the mockingbird wasdesignated as the state bird bythe Tennessee legislature in 1933.The Johnson City CommunityConcert Band was founded in1983 and currently includes 85100 musicians.
