Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni AssociationMission and HistoryMission: The Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association is dedicated to supporting the Fraternity. Recognizingthat the college band experience should continue after graduation, the Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Associationwill focus its efforts on connecting and enriching members from the past, present, and future of collegeand university bands; promoting lifelong involvement with band; and enhancing the long-term growth andfinancial viability of Kappa Kappa Psi.The Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association is an opportunity for members to extend their fraternityactivity by participating as alumni brothers and is open to all alumni, life, and honorary members of theFraternity. Members of the alumni association help offset costs of the alumni program, while annual duesand donations support alumni activities to ensure the Fraternity’s continued ability to provide valuableexperiences for all members following graduation. The Alumni Association is administered by the Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Board of Directors (AABOD). Whilemembers of the Alumni Association do not conduct business meetings as an assembled body, the Boardof Directors discusses Alumni Association activities, directions, and goals with association members atconventions and other meetings to plan future alumni programs and events. In 2010, the Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association Advisory Committee used the Preamble to the fraternity’sconstitution and summarized the directions and goals of the organization by stating:The Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association seeks to promote lifelong engagement with the Fraternityand college and university bands by: Fostering mutually beneficial relationships and opportunities among alumni brothers and active chapters; Creating positive settings in which alumni can meet, interact and serve with brothers during conventionsand other events; Promoting opportunities for alumni brothers to share their skills and talents with other brothers and bandmembers; Maintaining connections within the Fraternity and among its brothers through regular communicationand activities; and Enabling alumni brothers to continue their support of the purposes and endeavors of the Fraternity.Alumni Organizational History: Kappa Kappa Psi has a rich heritage of members who have been involvedwith the fraternity beyond their college careers. For many years, however, the main involvement wasprimarily from past National Officers as well as early members of the Fraternity, without the capacity of theorganization to form a more inclusive body. Although there has always been alumni interest and supportfrom others, the numbers of alumni desiring something more structured started to grow in the late 1980’sand early 90’s. This interest eventually developed into the National Alumni Association (NAA), which wasjoint with Tau Beta Sigma alumni members. This organization showed some of the promise and potentialfor future alumni involvement, and in 2007 the Board of Trustees issued a directive for the formation of theKappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association.rrououa l um ni @ k k p si . or ga l um ni h a nd b o ok pa g e 2

Why Be a Member of the Kappa Kappa PsiAlumni Association? As Active, Associate, or Conditional members of Kappa KappaPsi complete their education or terminate their affiliation withtheir college or university, they become Alumni members ofKappa Kappa Psi, as outlined in section 6.514 of the NationalConstitution. Upon graduation, Alumni of the Fraternity mayreceive a complimentary year of membership in the KappaKappa Psi Alumni Association by the chapter submitting aGraduating Senior Report, and may retain their membershipin the Alumni Association in subsequent years by paying theirannual membership fee, or becoming Life Members of theFraternity. There are several benefits to joining the Alumni Association, which are not available to non-Association members. First, membership in the Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association is anacknowledgement of the desire to continue to have a positiveimpact on the Fraternity and support the operations of theNational organization. Significant effort and expense goes intodealing with alumni affairs at the National Headquarters, andpaid membership in the Alumni Association addresses some ofthe costs associated with this service.Alumni Association members, like all Life Members, may alsoattend National and District Conventions, have the ability tovoice opinions on policies and programs to shape the future ofthe Alumni Association and membership is required to serveas an officer in a Local Alumni Association.Alumni Association members also have access to programssponsored and organized by the Alumni Association, suchas discounts on goods and services through partnershipswith national corporations, networking and mentorshipopportunities supported by the Alumni Association, and futureprograms as they are developed. Paid Alumni Associationmembers (including Life Members who have continued theiraffiliation with the KKPsiAA) will receive an annual subscriptionto the Podium and an Alumni Association membership card.Additionally, part of the dues that are paid by AlumniAssociation members go to support the Fraternity in its longterm goals by building endowment funds and contributing tothe Kappa Kappa Psi Trust which supports the NIB and otherprograms of the Fraternity.Dues and Membership Period: The membership periodfor the Alumni Association is June 1 to May 31. Annualmembership dues for alumni and honorary members are 50.00, while Life members are granted membership at noadditional charge. Recent graduates are also gifted a one-yearassociation membership by the Fraternity. All members mustfill out the respective paperwork each year. The complimentarymembership period for new graduates begins once theGraduating Senior Report has been processed, and along thefollowing guidelines:rFor more information on the Alumni Association andmembership, or for an online membership form, visithttps://kkpsiaa.kkytbsonline.com.Alumni Members and the Kappa Kappa PsiAlumni AssociationConstitutional Definition: Alumni members of the Fraternityare Active, Associate or Conditional members of the Fraternitywho have completed their education or who have terminatedtheir affiliation with their college or university (As stated in theNational Constitution, Article 6.514).“Alumni members have privileges of participation at chapterevents at the discretion of the local Chapter. These privilegesinclude but are not limited to: attending Chapter meetings, participating in Ritual, participating in Chapter fundraisers, andattending Chapter social functions (As stated in the NationalConstitution, Article 6.515). Alumni of the Fraternity are alsoeligible to become members of the Kappa Kappa Psi AlumniAssociation, which carries the additional privilege of attendingDistrict and National Conventions.”The current National Constitution can be found 15.pdfPolicy on attendance at chapter events:Alumni brothers are welcome to attend publicly announcedchapter events, such as rituals and anniversary events.Alumni brothers are welcome to attend chapter events thatare not publicly announced, such as regular meetings, ifspecifically invited to an event by the chapter. (An alumnibrother can contact the relevant chapter alumni secretary, chapter president and/or chapter sponsor to request such aninvitation.). These general rules reflect the discretion held bythe chapter with regard to attendance of alumni brothers attheir events. A chapter may decline to invite an alumni brotherto an event even if it has extended such an invitation to oneof more other alumni brothers. If a chapter asks an alumnibrother to leave an event, the alumni brother must respect thatchapter’s decision and depart. As alumni brothers, we respectand support these decisions by our active brothers. In essence, each Alumni brother must choose what activitiesare right for him or her, based on individual interests, abilities, resources, and stage of life. Involvement in the Fraternity maycontinue to be a large part of the life of an Alumni member ofthe fraternity. However, that involvement must bedifferentiated from life as an Active member.rouou Spring graduates: one-year complimentary membership, ending May 31 of the following year Summer graduates: approximately nine monthscomplimentary membership, ending May 31 of the followingyear Fall graduates: approximately one year and five months ofcomplimentary membership; ending May 31 two calendarsyears away.a l um ni @ k k p si . or ga l um ni h a nd b o ok pa g e 4

Policy and Procedure on former inactive members: If aformer member of Kappa Kappa Psi did not pay dues prior toterminating their affiliation with their college or university, they are classified as inactive members, and are not eligiblefor membership in the Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association(As stated in the National Constitution, Article 6.513). Inactivemembers also may not participate in any Fraternity business, projects, or activities.institution, band program, or applicable state law.”– Kappa Kappa Psi National Guide to Membership EducationIf an inactive member wishes to be eligible for membership inthe Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association, or to be a memberof any Kappa Kappa Psi Local Alumni Association, they mustsubmit an Inactive Reinstatement request in the OMRS.The request must then receive a 75% favorable vote by thechapter’s active membership, and must be approved in theOMRS by the Chapter President, Sponsor, and Director ofBands. If this reinstatement is granted, the Inactive membermust submit a printed copy of the Inactive ReinstatementRequest and on year’s dues to National Headquarters to changethe member’s status from Inactive to Alumni. In the event that an inactive member’s home chapter is nolonger active, the Inactive Reinstatement Request will bereviewed by the National Council of Kappa Kappa Psi, and ifgranted, dues must be paid to National Headquarters.Statement on Hazing: The Kappa Kappa Psi AlumniAssociation strives to support the Kappa Kappa Psi and TauBeta Sigma Policy on Hazing, and adhere to the Fraternal Codeof Conduct. As alumni, we must work to protect individualmembers, chapters, and the National Organization from harmthat may occur due to inappropriate behavior of active oralumni members. Please recognize that if there is a report ofpotential hazing the chapter is not immediately suspended. When a report is received, chapters are placed on a nonpunitive investigative hold while an investigation is conducted. If no wrongdoing is found, the chapter resumes full regularactivity. The most current policy on fraternity policies, includinghazing, can be found at: http://www.kkpsi.org/resources/policies/rouIf you are made aware of hazing, you must report it ASAP. Thesereports could be made to National Headquarters, The NationalCouncil, the Director of Bands and the Chapter Sponsor. TheNational Chapter sets standards through policies and it isimportant that there be accountability when standards arenot met and polices are violated. Lawsuits have threatenedthe very existence of Kappa Kappa Psi, and its future is moresecure when all members do their best to protect it. An alumnimember should be a resource, not a hindrance or an enabler.A Definition of HazingIt is suggested that the following six questions be asked abouta particular activity:1. Will the activity achieve one or more of the predeterminedgoals of the membership education program?2. Would you be willing to tell your chapter sponsor about theactivity?3. Would you be willing to perform this activity in front of auniversity administrator?4. Would you be willing to send the parents of the prospectivemember(s) involved a snapshot of this activity?5. Would you be prepared to go to court to defend the meritof this activity? Would you feel ridiculous doing this activity?6. Would you be willing to share a written description of thisactivity for other chapters to use?If there is the slightest question in anyone’s mind about theactivity, there is a quick and definite answer:DON’T DO IT. IT’S HAZING.To anonymously report hazing, em/If you have any questions or concerns, please call405-372-2333ra l um ni @ k k p si . or gAlumni members of Kappa Kappa Psi should be aware thatpolicies and definitions may have changed since their time asactive members. It is important to recognize that continuinga tradition is not worth compromising the future of thefraternity. There is no valid excuse for risking harm or injuryto a fellow brother. The definition of hazing presented below isused to examine current chapter or alumni activities, and usedas a guide for alumni brothers to evaluate activities carried outby alumni members.ouKappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma Policy on Hazing:No chapter, colony, student member, membership candidateor alumnus of Kappa Kappa Psi or Tau Beta Sigma shall conductnor condone hazing activities. Permission or approval by aperson being hazed is not a defense. Hazing activities aredefined as:“Any action taken or situation created that produces mentalor physical harm, discomfort, embarrassment, harassment, orridicule. Such activities may include but are not limited to thefollowing: use of alcohol, paddling in any form, line ups for thepurpose of intimidation, creation of excessive fatigue, physicaland psychological shocks, quests, treasure hunts, scavengerhunts, unnecessary road trips, wearing of public apparel which isconspicuous and not normally in good taste, engaging in publicstunts and buffoonery, morally degrading or humiliating gamesand activities, and any other activities which are notconsistent with academic or musical achievement;Kappa Kappa Psi/Tau Beta Sigma law, ritual or policy;or the regulations and policies of the educationalThe chapter shall hold a hazing workshop prior to First Degree. This workshop will inform prospective members of the hazingpolicy, the chapter membership education program, and a lineof communication to follow if the prospective members feelhazing may be occurring. A recommendation for the line ofcommunication is to first contact someone in the prospectivemember’s chapter (i.e. chapter vice president in charge of theMembership Education Program or big sibling, etc.), followedby the sponsor and director of bands, then the district governoror counselor. The National Headquarters will be made awareof any reports of hazing and will act appropriately. The chaptershould understand that their charter will be revoked if hazing isfound to be occurring.a l um ni h a nd b o ok pa g e 5

Alumni Roles in the FraternityAs a Brother of the Fraternity progresses from Activemembership to Alumni membership, their role in the Fraternitystructure changes as well. As we leave campus, the NationalChapter encourages continued involvement in the Fraternity ata different level. As the Fraternity allows us to build leadershipthrough our involvement as Active members, in the transitionto Alumni members, we learn the most difficult part of thatleadership cycle: allowing others to take responsibility and newleadership roles in the Active chapter.Alumni members have new routes through which they cancontribute to the Fraternity. They may have roles of supportingthe active chapter; through advising the active chapter whenrequests are made for their input; assisting in supporting theactive chapter in service projects; attending rituals or otherchapter functions as invited; or donating time or helping fundprograms at their alma mater.
