The starstudded competition concluded afantastic 12-week circuit for theinternational show jumpers.Anthony D’Ambrosio (USA) set thecourses in the International Ringat PBIEC for the final week of WEFcompetition. With 40 starters in thegrand prix, D’Ambrosio’s first roundcourse yielded seven clear for thejump-off, and only one clear over theshort course for the win.Chloe Reid (USA) and Codarco werethe first combination to clear thecourse in round one, but opted notto continue on to the jump-off toautomatically finish seventh. YannCandele (CAN) and the WatermarkGroup’s First Choice 15 were thenthe first pair to jump the shortcourse, finishing with 12 faults in52.31 seconds to place sixth. JessicaSpringsteen (USA) and Stone HillFarm’s Cynar Va jumped next, witheight faults in 48.69 seconds to finishfifth.McLain Ward and HH Azur, owned byDouble H Farm and Francois Mathy, jumped off next, finishing with a fasttime in 46.10 seconds, but added anunfortunate four faults that left the pairin second place. Meredith MichaelsBeerbaum aimed for a safe clear roundaboard Artemis Equestrian Farm’sFibonacci 17, but also dropped a railalong the way, finishing third overallwith her time of 51.41 seconds. Maherand Sarena followed, completing theonly clear round over the secondcourse for the win with a steadyround in 53.72 seconds. Last to go,Todd Minikus (USA) and Two SwansFarm’s Babalou 41 had one rail downas well, finishing fourth with their timeof 52.63.Speaking of his winning mount, a tenyear-old Selle Francais mare (CalvaroZ x Damoiseau d’Or), Maher stated, “Ihave had Serena for just over a yearPlease turn to page 2Kodachrome and Russell Frey Win 50,000 USHJA International HunterDerby to Conclude the 2016 WinterEquestrian FestivalRussell Frey and Kodachrome led from start to finish to win the 50,000 USHJAInternational Hunter Derby. SportfotThe 2016 Winter Equestrian Festival(WEF) completed its final day ofcompetition on Sunday with a winfor Russell Frey and Nina KoloseikeMoore’s Kodachrome in the 50,000USHJA International Hunter Derby.Held on the beautiful grass field at TheStadium at the Palm Beach InternationalEquestrian Center (PBIEC), the finalfeature of the circuit was presentedby Dietrich Insurance and hosted byTailored Sportsman, and sponsoredby Charles Owen, Dover Saddlery, TheClothes Horse and Essex Classics. The first round of derby competitionwas held in the E.R. Mische GrandHunter Ring on Saturday, where 45entries took on the first round coursedesigned by Ken Krome. Two panels ofjudges scored each round, and riderswere awarded extra points for jumpinghigh options. The top 24 entries then moved onto the derby field for Sunday’s handyround, jumping Bobby Murphy’s coursewith natural obstacles on the grass. Twopanels of judges once again scoredthe contestants, awarding bonus pointsfor high options as well as handinesson course. Judges Rick Fancher andJack Towell scored the rounds on panelone, and Danny Robertshaw and JimClapperton judged the rounds on paneltwo.Russell Frey and Kodachrome ledthe standings heading into Sunday’sfinal round with the high score of 185in round one. The pair then earned thehigh score of 200 on Sunday for thewinning two-round total of 385.Kodachrome is an eight-yearold Warmblood gelding that Moorepurchased for Frey last year withhopes that the gelding had Derby Finalspotential.“He was doing the 3’3” PerformanceHunters starting out, and I just saw himand liked him, and then I tried him andhad to have him,” Frey stated. “He haslearned and come along. This was hisfirst really big derby. This was a differenttype of class, to show over at the horseshow on the grand hunter field, andthen to come over here just to do thehandy round on the field in a completelydifferent venue for all of the horses. Itwas a pretty good test for every horseand rider that was out there.“He was a little nervous in differentplaces on the course, but he seemed toPlease turn to page 12

Continued from Page 1now, and it has been a tough ride. Shewas a horse that was bought to jumpthese big classes, but she was youngwhen we got her, and it really took a yearto get to know her and for her to getto know me. It has been a lot of hardwork and patience from Jane Clark, whosupported me the whole way through lastyear, because I had a lot of disappointingrounds. I told her to stick with me, andwe worked hard with the whole team athome. This is the first class she has won,but she picked the right time and I hopethere will be many more.”Maher spoke further about how he hasgotten to know Sarena more over thelast 12 weeks at WEF and really usedthe circuit to develop their partnership.“We had a careful plan,” he explained.“She did not jump much since Novemberand became pretty consistent over thelast few grand prix. The worst she has hadis one down since November. I found inthe jump-offs, when I try to go quick, shestarts to run backwards a little bit and itis not always a nice feeling. She has toget confident and get used to runningand jumping.“The course tonight, I thought shejumped the first round excellent,” Mahercontinued. “It was the first time under thelights for her, and she did not seem to beaffected by that. It was a tough course, but the jump-off really played into myhands. Had McLain’s turn pulled off, andhad Meredith left the jumps up, I do notknow if I could have actually been quickenough to beat them, so I decided toplay it a little safe and leave the jumpsup. That is not my nature normally, but Ithink I played a smart game tonight andput the pressure on Todd. Fortunatelyfor me, it worked out. It could have goneeither way.”The cards did not play in Ward’s favor thistime around, but the rider was happy forMaher, and felt that HH Azur jumped twogreat rounds. The ten-year-old BelgianSport Horse mare (Thunder van deZuuthoeve x Sir Lui) took a big win inweek seven’s 380,000 Suncast GrandPrix CSI 5*. Ward gave it everything inthis week’s jump-off hoping for anothervictory, but one unlucky rail came down.“We have been building up towards thistrying to get her fit,” Ward noted. “Ourplan was to try to not totally peak her, butpretty much peak her at this point andthen drop back a little, have a little rest, and then aim for Rio. She felt anothergear tonight and to be honest, with theseguys coming behind me, I was not tryingto leave anything on the table. I was kindof trying to put the knife in them. I thinkher pole was a little bit unlucky to behonest. I do not think she hit it very hard.I maybe started to press to the last line atouch early. The horse performed great, Iwas happy with the riding, and you havea great winner. Ben is a super, top, worldclass rider, one of the best in the world. It is always nice to win, but you can livewith being beat by a guy like this.”Michaels-Beerbaum also thoughtFibonacci 17 jumped great and justhad an unlucky rail in the jump-off. The11-year-old Swedish Warmblood gelding(For Feeling x Corland) finished the nightin third place, and his rider was happyto be in the top three alongside Maherand Ward.“Fibonacci was in great form tonight; hefelt amazing, and he jumped two beautifulrounds,” Michaels-Beerbaum stated. “Idid not actually expect to knock onedown in the jump-off because he wasjumping so well, so maybe I took thatjump a little casually or underestimatedit perhaps. I was delighted with him. Iam very pleased to be in the top three. That is always where a rider would liketo end up, and with these two in front ofme, my Chef d’Equipe Otto Becker willread their names in Germany and knowthe class was really hard and good, so itworks for me.”Maher spoke of the night’s first roundtrack, stating, “I thought it was a greatcourse. For my horse in particular, itstarted a little bit bold. I knew the waterto the double verticals was going to be adifficult ride. It did not feel so comfortablehow I got that done, but I got it done. The last line, the horses were tired andit was a big oxer coming out. The Rolexoxer was wide at the end, and for sure alot of hopes were dashed there. I thoughtthere would be more clears actually. Theyall jumped well, but it is hard to jumpdouble-clear in these grand prix.”Ward added his thoughts on the course, stating, “I thought Anthony did a greatjob. He had the right number of clear, faults all over the place, and it was avery smooth course to ride. The waterline was a little tricky, but I thought itgave the riders a fair chance, and wasan excellent course.”Commenting on the end to a fantasticevening, Equestrian Sport Productions’CEO Mark Bellissimo added his finalthoughts, stating, “I want to commendthis group. It is such an internationalcrowd with USA, Great Britain, andGermany represented with all worldclass riders. It is exciting to see suchgreat sport here and to end on a veryhigh note. I am pleased that everyonewas so spectacular in their performancesthis evening. I would also like to thankRolex. This festival took a big transition anumber of years ago when Rolex came onboard, and it was a transition to four fivestar [shows]. It was nice to finish this yearon a great five-star and a great class.”Along with the winner’s share of 165,000, Maher was presented theDennis D. Dammerman PerpetualTrophy. The trophy was created to honorthe contributions to equestrian sportof Dennis D. Dammerman, a longtimeowner of horses and founding memberof the Wellington Equestrian Partners.Sarena’s groom, Tracey Edge, receivedthe Groom’s Initiative Award presentedby Mark Bellissimo, managing partnerof Wellington Equestrian Partners, toreward her dedication and hard work asan integral member of the winning team.n Lauren FisherFinal Results: 500,000Rolex Grand Prix CSI 5*1.
