HISTORYBOART PRODUCTSOur diamond products were originally developed byAnglo American Corporation in the 1930sas a way to commercialize industrial-grade diamondsfor the world’s leading diamond producer. BoartProducts led the research and development programwhich enabled practical and reliable manufacturingof diamond coring bits.EARLY SUCCESS IN THE COPPER BELTThe first Boart bits off the line were put to useexploring for copper in Zambia and gold in theOrange Free State, South Africa. The early successof these bits paved the way for widespread adoptionof the technology within the industry.LONGYEARIn 1938, the Longyear contract drilling departmentstarted using castset diamond bits. Almostimmediately after Longyear had the bits in the field,the sales department started receiving inquiries fromaround the world regarding the availability of thediamond bit.As our surface-set diamond bit technologydeveloped, Longyear brand bits were put to usearound the world. In the 1960s, the Longyear Q wireline took the industry by storm and opened thedoor for widespread adoption of Longyear drillingtools and consumables.REVOLUTIONARY ENGINEERING1974 was an important year for Boart Longyear.Boart International became the sole owner ofLongyear. It was during this transition when engineers in North Bay, Ontario secured a reliable source of highperformance synthetic diamonds which triggered the development of a completely revolutionary bitdesign – the impregnated-diamond bit. With decades of powder metallurgy experience behind them,Longyear engineers set out to develop a new crown which consisted of synthetic diamonds evenlydistributed throughout a composite matrix. This new design could drill further and faster than surface-setbits and it cut through much harder material. By 1980, 75% of our Canadian-produced bits were of thenew impregnated type and Longyear was manufacturing diamond bits in more than eight countries.CONTINUED INNOVATIONToday, there are many marketers of diamond bits and very few of those companies have invested inbit development. Tapered intermediatewaterways improve flushing and preventaccumulation of debris. SPECIALTY BITSPOLYCRYSTALLINE COMPACTDIAMOND (PCD) BITSPCD bits are made for cutting softer formations athigh penetration rates. They typically have roundPCD cutters that can be replaced, extending thelife of the bit.THERMALLY STABLE DIAMOND (TSD) BITSThe TSD bit is used for fast penetration in soft/medium rock formations. TSD’s are a costeffective alternative for large stone surface setand PCD bits.TUYERE BITSTuyere bits are used for drilling holes throughrefractory bricks in smelters, named for thenozzles that inject air into smelting furnaces.SURFACE SET CORING BITSSurface set coring bits are typically used forhigher penetration rates than impregnated bitsin softer formations. CVD Diamond Pin Specimens The CVD diamond pin specimens were produced as follows: (1) a free-standing diamond film was pro-duced by the hot-filament CVD technique (ref. 5); (2) the film was brazed onto one end of a steel pin; and (3) the CVD diamond tip of the pin was then ground with a diamond wheel and polished with diamond powder.
