TAPERED 8 PLAIT TO CHAINTapered Premium 8 Plait To ChainFigure 1Note: All markings for production splicing shall be made with permanent, water resistant markersto prevent “Bleed-through”. Marking shall be made as small as possible and shall not be visible onthe final product.Step #1Beginning the SpliceFirst, lay out rope on a flat surface and count 12 Picks (crowns)from one end towards standing part of rope. Place a wrap oftwine around the rope at this point and tie tightly (a doubleoverhand knot would suffice).Figure 2Step #2Using the felt tip marker to mark the left rotating S-directionstrands at the bitter end.Figure 3Step #3Turn the rope over and mark the S-direction strands on theother side as well1

TAPERED 8 PLAIT TO CHAINFigure 4Step #4Just past the tied wrap of twine, mark the first full set of S-direction strands.Note: for these marks you may want to use Chalk so that it willbrush off after the splice is completedFigure 5Step #5Turning the rope over to mark the S-direction strands on theother side as well.Figure 6Step #6Stand SeparationRemove tape from end of rope. Unlay (untwist) the rope a shortdistance and tightly wrap tape around the end of each individual strand. Continue unlaying the rope to wrap of twine. Makesure not to mix or twist them, keeping the strand pairs together.2

TAPERED 8 PLAIT TO CHAIN3-STRAND ROPE TO CHAIN SPLICEFigure 7Step #7Tape the ends of the stand pairs together.Figure 8Step #8Strand Insertion through chain linkSetup one pair of S-direction and one pair of Z-directionstrands on each side of the chain link.Figure 9Step #9Pass strands through the link from opposite sides in an alternating fashion3

TAPERED 8ROPEPLAITTOTOCHAIN3-STRANDCHAINSPLICEFigure 10Step #10Initial Strand TuckNote: Prior to beginning tucks, insert small fid (1/4” or equivalent) between the throat of the splice and the chain link.To do the first tuck, using a fid, slightly raise a single pair of unmarked Z-direction strands on top of the standing part just below the twine so as to make clearance. Then tuck the first pairof marked S-direction strands under those Z-direction strands(as shown below). Pull strand snug, but not tight enough todistort lay of rope. Make sure you do not disturb the lay of thepairs (do not twist them).Figure11Step# 11Now turn the rope over; using a fid, slightly raise the single pairof un-marked Z-direction strands that are on the opposite sidefrom the pair used on the previous step. Then tuck the secondpair of marked S-direction strands under those Z-directionstrands (as shown). Pull snug but not tight enough to distortlay of rope.4

Then tuckthe pair of un-marked Z-direction strands under those S-direction strands (as shown below). Pull snug but not tight enoughto distort lay of rope.Figure 13Step #13Now turn the eye over again; raise the single pair of markedS-direction strands that are on the opposite side from the pairused on the previous step. Then tuck the remaining pair of unmarked Z-direction strands under those S-direction strands (asshown below). Pull all strand pairs snug to the chain.5

TAPERED 8ROPEPLAITTOTOCHAIN(STANDARD & TAPERED)3-STRANDSPLICEFigure 14Step #14Strand TucksThe method for the next series of tucks is to go over a strandpair then under a strand pair. In this splice, when you go over astrand pair you need to follow the braid of the rope (as shownin photo). So, essentially you are doubling up the braid from twostrands to four.Perform this second set of tucks with all four strand pairs. Then pull the strands firmly while avoiding twisting of thestrands.Figure 15Step #15TaperAfter the second full tuck, cut off one strand from each pair.Note: the strand to cut from each pair is the strand closest tothe chain. The tail of the cut strand should be at least one rope diameterlong and/or as long as need be to ensure it will not be drawnback into the rope when under load.Figure 16Step #16Tuck all four (4) of the split strand pairs an additional two (2)tuck, following the method described above.6

A. Basic tapered roller bearing design Because of their geometry and design features, Timken tapered roller bearings provide several important and unique performance characteristics to meet a wide range of application requirements. Tapered roller bearings consist of four basic components. These are the cone, the cup, tapered rollers and a cage .
