The experiences they have every day from birth help them to develop theirliteracy and numeracy skills.Literacy is about how we use our language to: speak, listen, read, write, spell and draw, tell stories, watch anduse electronic devices. Numeracy is about having the confidence and skills to use numbers, time, money, patterns, shapes and measurement and other mathematical knowledge in all aspects of life such as for cooking, reading a map or bill, reading instructions and even playing sports. The Early Start literacy and numeracy materials support teachers to find out yourchild’s early skills by using a series of tasks developed specifically forQueensland. It is important to remember that the Early Start literacy andnumeracy tasks are designed to gather information about students’ abilities, andtheir learning needs, so teachers can plan effective learning programs during theearly years of school. Don’t be concerned if your child can’t answer all of thesequestions. These tasks are designed to gather information about what your childknows and what needs to be taught next for their learning.‘Have a go’ together: Yes, you can do algebra!SPORT NEWS – David SmithSpecialists ‘Hardwiring’ the Habits of the Mind - The beginning of each new year sees our specialists’ cometogether as a team and work with year levels as a cohort to embed our school wide philosophies and practiceswhile building confidence and morale for a new year of learning together.
