March/April 2016CHAMBER OF COMMERCENewsletterCreating a strong local economy Promoting the community Providing networking opportunities Representing the interests of business with governmentSales Tax Study Moves ForwardTom Steuber Selectedas Lafayette’sCitizen of the YearOur City Council approved funds at its first meeting in February tohire a consultant to check in with our residents to test their appetitefor placing a sales tax measure on the November ballot. The SalesTax Revenue Committee has been meeting for several months and recommended to the council to move forward. With current revenue sourcesin place the city will be able to meet its obligations for the next 10 years. However, if the city wants to accomplish any of the priorities that werediscussed during last year’s “Community Conversations” such as OpenSpace Preservation, additional Crime Surveillance, Saving the Park Theater, Parking Gargages, etc, it will take a new source of revenue. If the citydoes not act on passing a measure for additional “local” sales tax now, itmay lose that opportunity if other agencies come forward, pass a sales taxand reach the cap of 9.5%. The Chamber is represented on the committeeand will be reaching out to our members soon to understand your positionon this issue. The Lafayette Chamber is proud to present this special award every year alongwith co-sponsor Lamorinda Weekly. Each year we solicit nominations and asmall committee has the difficult task ofpicking the winner. Sometimes campaignsare launched and we are flooded with letters recommending theirchoices. For a number of years, a group of families have beentelling us about one extraordinary member of our community. TomSteuber has presided as Scoutmaster for Lafayette’s Boy ScoutTroop 204 for twelve years. He has guided hundreds of boysthrough their scouting journey including an unprecedented 100scouts that have earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Tom has taughtboys to be leaders and to work together on common goals. Heguides them in their service to the community. He is a role model, always patient and thoughtful.Meet Chamber Member Britt BrownWhen most organizations gave up their printed newsletters, ourmembers said, “Please, NO.” Communicating about our membersand the projects we work on is so important. Weekly email blasts aregreat if they get opened but we think the old-fashioned method isjust as important. We thought it might be nice for you to know who isbehind the design and layout of our newsletter. Britt Brown has beendoing the heavy lifting for this publication for 17 years. She, of course, has many other clients working on magazine publications, catalogs, retail ads, brochures, stationary packages, logos, newspaper ads, trade shows and of course newsletters.
