About the universityKenyatta University is the 2nd largest University in Kenya, located along Nairobi- ThikaSuperhighway. It started as Kenyatta College, a constituent of the University of Nairobioffering Bachelor of Education following an Act of Parliament of 1970 in the TemplerBarracks. It became fully-fledged university in 1985. Pwani and Jomo KenyattaUniversities were its constituent colleges which have now become fully-fledgeduniversities.The University has campuses in most parts of Kenya including Ruiru, Parklands, Kitui,Mombasa, Nairobi City Centre, Nakuru, Nyeri, Kericho. It also has also established OpenDistance and e-learning centres in Mombasa, Nyeri, Embu, Parklands, Nakuru, Kisumu,Kakamega, Garissa, Marsabit, Kericho and Dadaab.The University has 18 schools offering various academic programs including Education,Health, Engineering, Humanities & Social Sciences, Business Studies, Public Health,Environmental Studies, Pure and Applied Sciences, Human and Applied Sciences,Economics, Law, Hospitality and Tourism and Agriculture, Architecture, Visual&Performing Arts, Creative Arts, Film & Media Studies and Peace and Security Studies2. About the programThe degree programs being made available to students in Dadaab via the BHER projectare known as: Bachelor of Education Science Bachelor of Education Arts.They are hosted by the School of Education although it draws many units from otherschools.3. Start date and expected completion date for the programsProgram starts: September 2016Program expected to be completed: April 2018.1

4. Admissions criteriaBHER Bachelor of Education (Science)Mean grade of C (plain) at KCSE or Division III at KCE or equivalent with DiplomaFrom Moi University in Science Education or Arts Education with c plain in twoteaching subjects at KCSE or a diploma in Education from a recognized institutionwith (2) years teaching experience or KACE with two (2) Principal passes and one(1) Subsidiary pass. In addition, applicants must have obtained Grade C (plain) orequivalent in Mathematics in KCSE.OrMean grade of C- at KCSE or equivalent and progressed from Certificate to Diplomaat Kenyatta University or any other recognized Institutions and have a C Plain in twoteaching subjects.Bachelor of Education (Arts)Mean grade of C (plain) at KCSE or Division III at KCE or equivalent or one with aBHER diploma from KU, or Diploma in Education from a recognized Institution with atleast two (2) years teaching experience after training.OrMean grade of C- at KCSE or equivalent and progressed from York UniversityCertificate to BHER Diploma at Kenyatta University or any other recognized/accredited Institutions. The students from the diploma in primary teacher educationwill continue with the teaching subject chosen at diploma level. Other students will berequired to have a C plain in two teaching subjects of their choice.5. Application processComplete the Kenyatta University Undergraduate application form, and attach: Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education National ID or Alien Card Any transcripts or certificates earned in non-BHER-affiliated academicprogramsDiplomas and transcripts from BHER-affiliated academic programs (eg CES-E,DTE-S, DTE-P) will be forwarded directly to Kenyatta University by the issuinginstitution.6. Discipline of Study:Bachelor of Education Arts and Bachelor of Education ScienceBachelor of Education is an academic program that prepares students to becomesecondary school teachers, administrators in academic institutions or policy developersin education sector.The program runs for 4 years. For students under BHER sponsorship they are expectedto receive transfer of credits for units pursued in the diploma level of which theygraduated with a minimum qualification of a credit “C” plainThe course requires one to do a practicum in 3rd year which lasts 3 months in asecondary school setting. Experience gathered during the teaching practice gives thelearner an exposure which enables one to have a feeling of what it takes for one to teachin a secondary school.If a student works hard and scores an upper second class honors one would qualify forMasters in Education. A Masters in Education would give one an opportunity of qualifyingto teach at University level as a Tutorial Fellow and with time qualify to be a lecturer.2

7. Qualification earned:Students who complete this program will earn a Bachelors of Education (B.Ed). Qualifies one to be a Secondary School Teacher, previously qualified to be aPrimary School Teacher from Pre-school up to upper primary. Gains overall qualification to teach in any basic Education Institution in Kenyaand neighboring countries. One can be a School Administrator, Government administrator of schools orCollege tutor Progress to masters’ level in many areas of Education management andplanning, curriculum development Acquiring masters in education enables one to apply for a Lecturing job atUniversity level.8. Program Structure and Schedule of StudyStudents in the (BHER) Kenyatta University BEd Science or BEd Arts will complete 33Units. They will also carry forward 15 units from their studies in Certificate or Diplomaprograms, to graduate with a 48 units degree.Note that at Kenyatta University; most single-semester courses are worth 1 unit. Forexample, most courses offered within CES-E were 3-credit courses at York but in KUthey are worth one unit .Kenyatta University divides the academic year in to three semesters 1stSemester (September to December), 2ndSemester (January to April) 3rdSemester (May to August).Students in Dadaab will be enrolled in courses over five semesters.There will be a practicum in this academic program to be done in the 3rd semester in 3rdyear. Students doing physics, chemistry and biology will be required to do some practicallessons on face to face interaction with the lecturer which will be organized in agreedupon Lab facilities in Dadaab.Students will otherwise complete courses online, working independently. Students willbe required to attend the BHER Learning Centre one day per week throughout all termsto participate in tutorial activities. There will be a teaching practice session from May –July 2017.
