Pastor’s MusingsIt’s Been a Good Year! This baby had a good year!I found myself thinking about the phrase “It’s been a good year!”perusing the headlines of my seminary newsletter. “It’s been agood year!” celebrates what has been done and what we haveaccomplished. “It’s been a good year!” acknowledges the fact thatwe’ve hung in there together and we’ve had some good times.Thinking about this seminary newsletter headline, I found myself celebrating what it hasmeant to be this congregation’s pastor for exactly one (1) year now! It’s been a good year,Sinton First United Methodist Church, and I pray that we have been able to celebratemeaningful, meaning-filled times together in our work and worship.Working with the children and youth of this church, watching them grow, has been just one ofmany highlights of our year together here in Sinton. It is precisely the enjoyment I haveexperienced working with our precious young ones which prompted me to find this wonderfulvideo singing, what else? “It’s been a good year!” Take the time now to hear this very shortsong sung by a group of little graduates, “It’s Been a Good Year” by Teresa Jennings, found onthe website, Music K-8 at www.musick8.com/. A YouTube video of the song, sung by a groupof what looks like preschoolers dressed in graduation robes, is found on YouTube. Click hereto see, hear and sing along: http://youtu.be/5L9HFtVPyHoLyrics:It’s been a good year; I can’t complain!I used my mind; I used my brain. But now we’re all through; we’re movin’ on,It’s been a good Y-E-A-R year! It’s been a good year; we had some fun!We learned a lot; we got things done. But now we’re all through, we’re movin’ on,It’s been a good Y-E-A-R year! All done! Yeah!Continued .1

Continued. The song mentions that the children (probably preschoolers) are graduating and moving on toKindergarten or 1st grade. However in our case, I am happy to say that OUR work together, inthe church, as the Body of Christ, is never done, until Jesus himself returns. We might be“movin’ on,” yet we have so much more to do! Thanks be to God for His work done throughus! After being here for one year, I am looking forward to doing more and more to serve thecommunity of Sinton with each and every one of you. I am looking forward to seeing more ofGod’s people stepping out in faith, stepping forward voluntarily in order that we might put moremeat on our “ministry bones.” In particular, there are four (4) areas, I’ll be focusing on and Iinvite your prayerful consideration as you look to get involved in the work of the church:(1) Worship: Is there anything you would like to do to help enhance (improve) worship onSundays?(2) Outreach: Join me in being totally committed to reaching out to our surroundingneighborhoods.(3) Youth: The youth and their parents of this church need your loving support, as we willbegin in July having monthly youth sponsorship meetings.(4) Children: You’ll be seeing more happening with the children’s ministries of the church, beginning with a new Boys Sunday school class. One thing I hope each person of this church now knows: Whatever your gifts, whateveryour passions and desires, please bring those gifts and passions to the church and let’s dovibrant ministry together!Have a happy and safe 4th of July, as we remember those who have fought and died for America’sIndependence. With all of my love,Pastor RosieTherefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, for yeknow that your labor is not in vain in the Lord. (1 Corinthians 15:58)Many thanks to everyone who donated items & supplies for the families in Laredo, and toeveryone who volunteered their time and energy by collecting and delivering thoseitems! Thank You So Much!!!2

We have not been able to gather enough boxes toget all of the cartridges packed and shipped in a timely fashion and we have an overflow. Greetings from the Wesley NurseThis month, several of us began a journey to health and wellness by coming together toparticipate in The Daniel Plan. It is not like any other journey you will take. Thefoundation for the program is faith. Before we talked about food, what to eat, what toavoid, when to exercise, how much exercise, etc, we talked about faith. It is a verydifferent approach and we are all looking forward to very different outcomes. One ofthe statements says this: “If you are going to change your life, you must first change theway you think—your perceptions about God, about yourself, about life, about food, about health, and about everything else. Change always begins with new thinking.” Notyour typical start to a diet plan! We are challenged the very first week to spend at least10 minutes a day reading the Bible, meditating on what we have read and talking to Godabout it. It is setting time aside for the quiet time with God. You would think that wouldbe easy but in our busy lives where every minute is challenged with something that ispreoccupying us, it is not as easy to do as you would think!Philippians 4:6-7 puts it this way: “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray abouteverything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you willexperience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace willguard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” By learning to lean on God’sSpirit instead of our own, it will help us to be stronger in our journey. In The Daniel Plan, Rick Warren says this: “God has never made a person he didn’tlove. If you want to know how valuable your life is to God, just look at the cross. Withhis arms outstretched, nailed to the cross, Jesus was saying, ‘This is how valuable youare to me. I love you this much! I’d rather die than live without you.’ You arepriceless.” If we never reach our health goals, if we never reach that “perfect weight”,God still loves us just as we are. He is not withholding his love until we are physicallyhealthy or spiritually mature. He loves us right now!Today’s culture makes it very difficult to live out a healthy lifestyle but it can be done! After all, if God is for us, who can stand against us?Peace and grace,Kerry, Wesley Nurse6

Laredo Humanitarian Relief SupportMany thanks to all of you who responded to the call to help with the immigrant crisis in the valley! There areover 40,000 immigrants currently needing assistance while they are in the process of connecting withrelatives in the US. 65% of these are children. We provided hygiene supplies, snack food, underwear, first aidkits, pullups, wipes, socks and money. Driscoll Health Plan donated 300 drawstring bags. Calvary Chapel inIngleside donated 36 hygiene/snack bags. These and supplies from some of the other local Wesley Nurseswere delivered to the FUMC in Laredo on Saturday, June 28th. Laredo Humanitarian Relief Team is theorganization of non-profits that are coordinating the relief effort. You can follow their activities on Facebook. The effort in Laredo is really something to see. The faith based community has come together to coordinatequite an effort to see to the needs of these women and children. One of the reasons they were able to do thisso quickly is the ongoing work they do together on a regular basis. The Holding Institute is a UnitedMethodist Women’s facility. It is quite rundown and neglected but it is a bustle of activity at the moment. The immigrants begin their stop here in America at the detention centers where they start their initialgovernment processing and are given a hearing date for review of their immigration request. From here, mostof the immigrants are bused to the Greyhound Bus station and left. Due to the volume of people, the busstation is turning people out on the streets. Shuttles with the faith based community will pick up theimmigrants to take them to get clothing, food and to provide a place to sleep till they can move on. At theHolding Institute, immigrants are shuttled in from various areas. They meet at a table under the “information”tree so they will know what to do. First stop is to check in and let a volunteer know how many are in theirgroup and the ages and where their destination from Laredo will be. Bags will be prepared for eachparticipant with basic essentials such as hygiene items and snacks while the immigrants are moving thru thecenter. They get a small bag if they are traveling to Houston as it is a short trip or they will get a larger bag ifthey are headed out of state to say New York. From the initial check in, the immigrants are able to pick out aclean set of clothes and then they will stand in line to get a shower. After the shower, they return to pick uptheir travel bag and then they will wait at the “information” tree until the next shuttle comes to pick them up.Most of the immigrants have a place to go so they are just passing thru. These are Central Americans thathave been told by the drug cartels that if they get their children to America, they will be able to stay and havea better life free of fear of murder and rape. The cartels are transporting the women and children for 3000/person. If they cannot pay, the women are signing papers that commit them to the sex/slave trade sothey can get their children out of a bad situation. Sadly, most of these people will be deported after theirimmigration hearing, if they make it to their hearing. If the immigration stopped today, there would still be 8weeks of people to process before it will slow down. The Holding Institute is in need of volunteers to assist. If you can give any amount of time, they would begrateful. You would primarily be sorting clothes and supplies and unloading donations. They are particularlyshort of volunteers on the weekend. If you feel moved to go, please contact Vicki Garcia, the volunteercoordinator, at 956-763-3667 to coordinate the visit. Matthew 25:40: "The King will reply, 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.'Mission SupportDuring the month of June, we had the privilege of meeting Pastor Kephas, a District Superintendent with theAfrican Methodist Church. His church is in western Kenya and he travelled here to the US to make us awareof the great needs his church has. He lives in an area of Kenya that has been neglected by the government soit is by his account the poorest of the poor. Thru his efforts, he has been able to establish a small health clinicand school. Due to the large number of orphans from the Aids crisis, he has directed his congregants aboutthe importance of adopting these orphans. He and his wife have 3 biological children and something like 127adopted children. When he travelled to the US, Pastor Kephas had a one way ticket to Washington,Continued DC. Fromthere he connected to various people by praying that God would guide his way. The donations he. receivedfrom our church was one dollar short of paying for his ticket to Minnesota! The donations hereceived from our church was one dollar short of paying for his ticket to Minnesota! His purpose was tomake people aware that his area was in need of our assistance. That is an incredible show of faith! As wecurrently are not supporting a particular missionary, we might consider making Pastor Kephas and hisoutreach one of our mission projects. August 2 is the next Sinton Market Days. I will be setting up a boothto sell baked goods. All the proceeds will be donated to Pastor Kephas’ ministry. Care to join me? Let meknow if you can donate items for us to sell.Kerry, Wesley NurseLife Line ScreeningSome of you may have received a notice that Life Line is having a screening in Taft at the FUMCon July 9th. We will also be hosting a screening on October 8th here at our church. If you are inno hurry, you may want to wait until October 8th to participate here.To My Dear Church Family, Pastor Rosie & Missy,How can I begin to thank you? I truly believe the reason I am able to do as well as I am is because ofyour prayers, encouraging words of love through calls and visits while I was in the hospital and recovery! You kept me “in touch” with God, our heavenly Father! Thank you so much.My thanks, also, for making my room a more welcoming place with your gifts of flowers and sweet things.I will love you always and thank God for you every day!Alleta Waters8

Musings from the Pastor Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Psalm 51:10 The scripture above comes from Psalm 51, the psalm we pray every Ash Wednesday, the day Lent begins. The entire psalm is one of honest confession of our brokenness and lostness, and unrelenting hope

Musings from the Pastor This year we begin Advent with two (yes, TWO) baptisms. We celebrate with the Schleif and Osness-Francour families as their little ones receive God’s promise of new life in Christ. These are the fifth and sixth baptisms I’ve done this fall. Two were outside at family homes, one outside at church, and the

The Pastor's Musings A few weeks ago in the middle of a sermon, I asked you all to share with me - “Where have you seen God this week?” I cried when I read the responses. I am so grateful for each and every one of you — you bless my life incredibly. It was most interesting to me that the majority of the responses had to do with people .
