Bravo to you all!Once again, welcome to the Open University of Tanzania, specifically to our belovedDepartment of Linguistics and Literary Studies, which is under the Faculty of Arts andSocial Sciences (FASS). Our department is located in BLOCK C, Room No. CF 06 at theHead Office, Dar es Salaam. However, help with the admission process, registration and/oracademic advice, can be obtained from OUT Centres and coordination units which are inalmost all regions of Tanzania and of course in Kenya, Rwanda, Malawi and Namibia.I hope that this Orientation program will serve as an opportunity for you to gain essentialinformation about the programmes in the department and how they are run.1.1. Background:The department of Linguistics and Literary Studies (LLS) deals exclusively with languageoriented courses. It was established in 2007 by combining three formerly separatecoordination units of Kiswahili, Linguistics and Literature. As a consequent of this merger,the department has developed into being the largest in the faculty and operates under threesubsections, which are linguistics coordinated by Mr. Mosi Masatu, Literature which iscoordinated by Ms. Caroline Mugolozi, and Kiswahili undergraduate, coordinated by Mr.Emmanuel Msangi and Swahili postgraduate by Dr. Omari Maguo. Certificates Programmes1.2.1. Certificate in FrenchOur department also offers French certificate modules leading to an award of a certificateof French at different levels. These modules are divided into three levels as follows:French for Beginners, Intermediate Level and Advanced Level. A graduate of the programcan satisfactorily perform language tasks in accordance with the level acquired. Theselevels are chained up whereby the completion of one level qualifies one for an advancedlevel. The certificates in French will allow one to join the Open University of Tanzaniafoundation course. Each certificate level is offered for a duration of nine months.1.2.2. English Proficiency CertificateWe offer an online course known as English Proficiency Certificate Program (EPCP). Thecourse is designed specifically to help second and foreign English learners to improve theirproficiency in the language. In line with this view, the course strives to train its learners inthe four language basic skills: listening, speaking, writing, reading and writing.So far, the course is divided into nine major parts as hereunder:1.2.3.4.5.6.7.Parts of speechBeyond the simple sentenceVerb tenses & pronounsThree sentence levelFrom sentences to paragraphsFrom paragraph to essaysAcademic writingFurther, each of these seven major parts consists of several lectures on specific topics,some of which being: types of words, types of sentences, writing notes, writing essays,listening and comprehension, speaking, presenting, verb-subject agreement, tenses,punctuation, just to mention a few. For each of these lectures, we provide contentprompting our learners to listen, understand, speak, write, read and write English.Regarding the methods, we present our course through multimedia - texts, audio, stillimages, animation, video, and interactivity content forms. That is, we give on notes

(lectures), practices, quizzes and assignments or give hyperlinks to open notes, lessons,pictures and videos by other institutions or individuals.Our learners can learn independently individually or in groups. What is more, we have anonline forum where our learners can exchange views by fellow learners and or courseinstructors of the program. The instructors of the course can also interact with learnersthrough email and the forum. What is more, learners evaluate themselves and send theirresults of the assignments and quizzes to the course instructor who eventually gives themEnglish Proficiency Certificate upon determining that the requirement is met.The course enrols anybody with a basic level of English wishing to improve his or herproficiency in the language. One is only required to show the proof of payment of thecourse fee, which is currently 90,000/Tshs. and she or he becomes enrolled in the courseinstantly irrespective of where he or she is. The enrolment, in this case, means, permissionto access the course (a receipt of a user name and a password).1.3. Undergraduate ProgrammesAt the undergraduate level, the department has three programmes to cater to undergraduatestudents; which are: Bachelor of English Language and Linguistics (BA ELL)Bachelor of Kiswahili and Creative Studies (BA KISW)Bachelor of Arts in Literature (BALIT)The details of these programs can be obtained from our website.1.4. Postgraduate ProgrammesAt the postgraduate, level the department offers the following programmes.1.4.1. Masters ProgrammesThere are two broad categories of master programs that the department offers at the presenttime.1.4.1.1. Master of Arts by ThesisThis caters for candidates who wish to study postgraduate progamme under the distancemode. Under this category, the department offers the following programmes M.A. in LinguisticsM.A. in LiteratureM.A. in Kiswahili.1.4.1.2. Master of Arts by CourseworkUnder this category, the department offers M.A. Kiswahili. However, MA English andLinguistics is still undergoing the accreditation process and will be offered as soon as it isaccredited by the Tanzania Commission for Universities.

1.4.1.3. Assessment CriteriaStudents’ assessment in the Postgraduate the programmes is through course work andexaminations. Except for the dissertation, the students in each course are evaluated asfollows:Coursework: Total marks 50% One Timed Test . 20%One Term Paper .30%Examination . . 50%Total .100%The pass mark for each examinable course shall be 50%. A candidate who may not havecompleted course work shall not be allowed to proceed for research work.1.4.2. Doctor of Philosophy DegreesPhD degree programmes are available for all discipline specialities offered at the Masterslevel. These programmes are offered through distance education mode and can beaccomplished only by way of a thesis.1.5. TeachingThere will be course multimedia content on the online platform called Moodle. Thereinyou will find course outlines, notes, discussion forums, videos, PowerPoint presentations,review questions and references, just to mention a few. Your registration into Moodle willbe automatic upon registering with the university and paying fees. You need a user nameand a password to enter Moodle. You can get this password from ICT personal in regionalcentres all over the country, or you can request it by mail from ict.helpdesk@out.ac.tzThere will also be technology-mediated teaching through Zoom teleconferencing softwarestarting from 4th December 2020.
