An Nawawi Forty Hadith14th February 201340 Hadith: An-Nawawi: Hadith 23 How to free oneselfLecture by Sister Eman al Obaidwww.alhudasisters.wordpress.comThis hadith will soften the heart and youcan see everything about Allah subhana wata'ala in this hadith. On the authority of Abu Malik al-Harith bin Asim al-Asharee (may Allah be pleased with him) who said:The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Purity is half of iman (faith).‘Al-hamdu lillah (praise be to Allah)’ fills the scales, and ‘subhan-Allah (how far is Allah from everyimperfection) and ‘Al-hamdulillah (praise be to Allah)’ fill that which is between heaven and earth. Andthe salah (prayer) is a light, and charity is a proof, and patience is illumination, and the Qur’an is aproof either for you or against you. Every person starts his day as a vendor of his soul, either freeing it orcausing its ruin.” It was related by Muslim. How to free oneself from Hellfire?1

An Nawawi Forty HadithPurity is half of iman (faith)ImanThe faith consists of two things. The place of thefaith is in the heart.Takhliya – purification / cleanlinessTahliya - BeautifyingYour heart is like glass, in order for your heart to betransparent and to do the job Allah subhana wa ta'alacreated you for, you need to purify the heart.Good DeedsWhen you clean the heart then you find thebeautification of the heart. The heart is beautified by thegood deeds. The actions of the heart are:TawakkulMuhabatAllahAs SidqAl IkhlasKhawf and rajaAl Isti’anahAll the different types of worship of the heart are tahliya, beautification of the heart. You need actionsof the heart – TAQWA. Taqwa includes all the actions of the heart. First you need to purify the heartfrom the sins. Reading one ayah of the Qur’an should beautify the heart – but when there is no impact itis because you cannot have takhliya and sin together.Purification is half of the faith.Purification is of two typesAl TuhurAl Hissiy– Tangible cleanliness. Taking care of where you are sitting, your house, yourself etc. What is the relationship between keeping everything clean and the faith?Hadith: A believer is always pure even in the state of janaba.2

An Nawawi Forty HadithThe masjid should be the cleanest place but people do not care about the masjid.Al Ma’nawi- Abstract – Purification of the heartYou will not get to the faith until you get to half of the faith – this is when you are clean on the outsideand clean on the inside.Allah subhana wa ta'ala exposes the sins of the heartWe all have sins of the heart but we are not exposed to the sins of our heart. Allah subhana wa ta'alawill gradually show you your sicknesses of the heart according to the situation until you discoveryourself. You will not purify the sickness of your heart until Allah subhana wa ta'ala exposes them toyou. This is the greatest ni’mah.People will tell you your mistakesYou need to discover your mistakes and you need people to tell you your mistakes. You need to knowthe truth from the people close to you. When someone tells you your mistake you get defensive butwe are in life togetherwe are in life for a short timewe are in life in a stage of reformationthe dunya is not perfect for anybodypeople are not perfect for each otherWhat is important is that the message came to you – are you like how people say you are or not? This isfrom Allah subhana wa ta'ala as Allah subhana wa ta'ala wants to show you your mistakes as a way ofpurification. It would be worse not to know that this is something in you. Don’t take it personally. If youdon’t know your mistakes how will your purify yourself?Al-hamdu lillah (praise be to Allah)’ fills thescalesWal-HamduliLlah Tamil al MeezanAl MeezanWhich meezan is this? This is the meezan on the Day of Judgment.Don’t you believe that on the Day of Judgment thereis a scale which covers the horizon? This scale willweigh all that which is abstract for us today in this life.It will be tangible on the Day of Judgment. Now your faith is abstract but on the Day of Judgmentit will be tangible and put on the scale i.e. your prayer, every word etc. What will be tangible?3

An Nawawi Forty HadithYour scale will be filled – you don’t see it but you believe in the hadith of Nabi sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam. This is a real meezan and everything will have a weight. This is the virtue and importance of AlHamduliLlah.Al TahmidThe PraiseworthyMinimum you will say this 17 times a day in your prayer. This is ‘Al-HamduIiLlah – All the praises andthanks are due to Allah subhana wa ta'ala because of His perfections, because He is the Praiseworthy.Nobody deserves the praises except Allah subhana wa ta'ala because of His perfections and because ofHis bounties upon us.You need to remember you being in this life is a favour from Allah subhana wa ta'ala. You are breathing, you are enjoying, you are talking etc. Al-HamduliLlah, Allah is the Praiseworthy, and He is teaching ushow to praise Him.Nobody deserves the full praise except Allah subhana wa ta'ala. To people you say ‘shukran, JazakAllahKhair, thank you’. Al Hamd is only for Allah subhana wa ta'ala. You are praising Him for His perfections.‘May Allah subhana wa ta'ala make everything we see and hear in this life make us to remember Allahsubhana wa ta'ala. Ameen.Whatever you are enjoying in life, whatever your eyes will see or your ears will hear you say this is fromAllah subhana wa ta'ala, anything, any blessing, actually you are drowned in Allah subhana wa ta'ala’sblessings.Al-HamduliLlah is forHis NamesBecause of His AttributesHis actionsCommandsThe DecreeWe need to praise Allah subhana wa ta'ala for these five things, not just when something befalls you.Al-HamduliLlah that Allah subhana wa ta'ala is our Lord, He has the Most Beautiful NamesAlhamduliLlah because Allah subhana wa ta'ala has the best Attributes, His Face is the best, HisKalam is the best.Al-HamduliLlah because of His actions. All His actions are good. If you are good Allah subhanawa ta'ala will deal with you with bounties, if not, Allah subhana wa ta'ala will deal with you withjustice. Allah subhana wa ta'ala will never oppress anybody. Minimum Allah subhana wa ta'alawill deal with you with justice. If you do good Allah subhana wa ta'ala will give you more.Al-HamduliLlah because of His rules – the halal and haram. But people think this is a burden.Allah subhana wa ta'ala know what is good for you. He knows nothing can reform you andreform the people around you except when you are following His commands.Al-HamduliLlah for all His decree whether you see it as good or bad. If good befalls you, you sayAl-HamduliLlah. If you see something you don’t like, also you say Al-HamduliLlah.4

An Nawawi Forty HadithAl-HamduliLlah with the FaithWhen you utter AlhamduliLlah with the faith Allah subhana wa ta'ala appreciates it, He fills the scalewith just one Al-HamduliLlah. Imagine when you say Al-HamduliLlah with the faith, you feel that youcannot thank Allah subhana wa ta'ala enough. This is AlhamduliLlah Tamlah al Meezan.Be AppreciativeAlways be appreciative, but you always want the things which are not good and you forget the blessings.Allah subhana wa ta'ala is forbearing even when we point at one blessing and say we don’t like this.Allah subhana wa ta'ala perfected you so why are you looking at things which are imperfect. Quote –‘Nothing will fill the eyes of the human being except the dust.’Who said your life should be perfect? If you want perfection, perfection is on the Day of Judgment in Paradise. This will make a person content and pleased. Look at what has been given to you, don’t look at what hasnot been given to you. Be like a bee not like a fly – the bee looks at the colourful flowers but the flylooks at the dirt.subhan-Allah (how far is Allah from everyimperfection) and ‘Al-hamdulillah (praisebe to Allah)’ fill that which is betweenheaven and earth.Al Tahmid Al TasbihWhen you say SubhanAllah and AlHamduliLlah you will get so much reward. Why SubhanAllah and Al-HamduliLlahtogether?SubhanAllah means you are negating all theimperfections, negating all that doesn’t suitAllah subhana wa ta'ala. You need to walk in between SubhanAllah and Al-HamduliLlah.Why do you need SubhanAllah?5

An Nawawi Forty HadithNegate from Allah subhana wa ta'ala all the imperfectionsYou need it when you see something which brings doubts in you, makes you to think bad of Allahsubhana wa ta'ala. When you say SubhanAllah you are freeing Allah subhana wa ta'ala from all theimperfections for example questioning why there are so many injustices in life. In life we are goingtowards Allah subhana wa ta'ala through the dunya. The trials are good and bad – these are from Allahsubhana wa ta'ala. Even when you see or experience evil you say Al-HamduliLlah.When things happen not as you planned or something happens that you did not plan at all i.e. someoneblocks your car - this makes you unhappy but this is the decree from Allah subhana wa ta'ala. Don’tblame people, your test is your test, their test is their test. Everything is decreed by Allah subhana wata'ala so you need to negate from Allah subhana wa ta'ala all the imperfections. When something happens in your life that you don’t like you need to fill your heart with Tasbih. Youdon’t want to say anything against Allah subhana wa ta'ala even with just your feelings. All your feelingshould be good. What is not suiting Allah subhana wa ta'ala? You need to negate all the Siffat al Nafs –imperfect attributes.i.e. Allah subhana wa ta'ala does not sleep,Allah subhana wa ta'ala will not be heedless,Allah subhana wa ta'ala will not forget. You may see people doing bad things and still they are happy – don’t think that Allah subhana wa ta'alahas forgotten about them. Forgetfulness is an imperfection and Allah subhana wa ta'ala is far away fromimperfections. Allah subhana wa ta'ala will never be unjust. You need to purify Allah subhana wa ta'ala, negate the imperfect attributes. For your tasbih to be perfect you need to understand what you are saying. There is no imperfection inAllah subhana wa ta'ala’s knowledge. For example our mercy in incomplete – our perfection isincomplete. All Allah subhana wa ta'ala’s attributes about His seeing, His hearing and knowledge neverdecrease but your mercy increases and decreases. Your knowledge, sometimes you forget. Allahsubhana wa ta'ala’s attributes are perfect.Negate Allah subhana wa ta'ala resembling His CreationSubhanAllah means to negate from Allah subhana wa ta'ala resembling anybody from His creation. Youcan’t say anyone resembles Allah subhana wa ta'ala in anything. Qul huwa .We need tasbih in our life. When SubhanAllah you are negating all the imperfections and you areattributing all the perfections to Allah subhana wa ta'ala. Saying SubhanAllah & Al-HamduliLlah togetherwill expiate your sins even if they are as much as the foam of the sea. This will free your from Hellfire, free you from the chain of Hellfire.6

An Nawawi Forty HadithAnd the salah (prayer) is a lightAs Salat – the prayer, which prayer?Any prayerThe reward for the prayer is intangible but I needto do it.NurYour prayer is ‘nur’, your prayer is light.Which type of light?A very beautiful light, nur, like the light of the moon.Which type of salat? The salat which you are doing perfectly, you are fulfilling the shuroo of the salat, you are performing the actions of the salat, you have the call of the salat, the khushoo. You may not have the maximum in your prayer but you are trying your best. The more khushoo you have you will enjoy your prayerYou are speaking to Allah subhana wa ta'alaYou are infront of Allah subhana wa ta'alaYou say Allahu Akbar and Allah subhana wa ta'ala’s face will be infront of your face. This is foreverybody at the same time. As soon as you turn Allah subhana wa ta'ala will turn.May Allah subhana wa ta'ala make us among those who establish the prayer. AmeenSalat is the Nur in your HeartIf you perform the prayer well it will be a ‘light’ for you. According to how much you are seeking the helpfrom Allah subhana wa ta'ala the ‘light’ will be in your heart.Allah subhana wa ta'ala will give you the tranquilityAllah subhana wa ta'ala will give you the peaceAllah subhana wa ta'ala will give you the protection from the evil.Chapter (29) sūrat l-ʿankabūt (The Spider)7

An Nawawi Forty Hadith29:45 Recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knowsthat which you do.If you watch yourself the real prayer will make you to abstain from the sins. If you sin after the prayerthen it is not the real prayer. It is not possible to be infront of Allah subhana wa ta'ala and thenafterwards to sin. The lights which Allah subhana wa ta'ala will give a person in their life when theyperform their salat isThe peaceThe tranquilityBecause you are infront of Allah subhana wa ta'ala and you are talking to Allah subhana wa ta'ala. Youare dealing with the One Who is perfect you are talking to the One Who is perfect. This is the light of the salat. And Allah subhana wa ta'ala will give a light on the place. If your belief isright and correct, the salat is one of the things which will give you the peace in your heart, it will reformyour heart, it will make you abstain from the sins, it will reflect on the outside, reflect on your face.As soon as a person becomes a Muslim Allah subhana wa ta'ala will give them the light, as soon as youpray Allah subhana wa ta'ala will give you the light.Salat is the Light in your GraveWhen you die your grave will be full of light. Death should be private, not a tamashah. Sometimes thelight will show. May Allah subhana wa ta'ala make us to have good faith and belief in order to have thebest in the akhirah. Ameen.Salat is the Light on the Day of JudgmentYou need light to cross the siratt because there is darkness. Salat is one means to get the light. This willmotivate you not to miss the obligatory prayer. Increase in the prayer for the Sake of Allah.Hadith: Prophet Muhammad sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said ‘The salat is the coolness of my eyes.’Because you are talking to the One you love. Al-HamduliLlahi Rabbil Alameen. When you talk tosomebody they don’t understand, but when you are talking to Allah subhana wa ta'ala, Allah subhanawa ta'ala will never, never judge you differently because Allah subhana wa ta'ala knows you. Allahsubhana wa ta'ala gave us the prayer to meet with Him subhana wa ta'ala, this is a ni’amah from Allahsubhana wa ta'ala. When I don’t find the ‘nur’ there is some fault, maybe my prayer is not for the Sake of Allah, maybe I amshowing off etc. salat is to see where we are, perhaps there is some fault in our salat.and charity is a proofBurhanThis is another type of light.Burhan – evidence, a clear light, a proof(nur is a subtle beautiful light).8

An Nawawi Forty HadithWhat is considered a light?Sadaqa (charity) is from the word sidq (truth). If you are truthful in your faith you will give sadaqa. Thecharity you give is an indicator of your faith.- How much you are a believer,- How much you are truthful and not worrying about poverty.Sadaqa is an indicator of where you are standing. If you give for the Sake of Allah straight away this is aproof for you.Truthfulness of your FaithMoney is very beloved to people so if you give it away you have overcome your weaknesses. This is anindicator of the truthfulness of your faith. Your faith should be truthful.and patience is illuminationDhiy’aSabr – this is when you hold yourself fromcomplaining, from showing unhappiness, from notliking to be disliked. You need to hold your heart andyou need to hold your tongue to show that you arenot impatient. How do you show you are impatient?Something happens and you will throw things etc.your attitude and reaction is important. You areimpatient and showing it physically.Impatience can be in the heartImpatience can be on the tongue – minimum is to say ‘uff’.Impatience can be physicallyIs patience easy or difficult? To be patient is very difficult as you want to say something.Be relaxed.Hadith: Patience is the light, like the sunlight, shiny.Nur of the Prayer – like the nur of the moon, coolness of the eyesDhiy’a of Patience – like the brightness of the Sun (there is a lot of reward for patience as it is a struggleagainst yourself). Sunlight is a light to see everything but it is difficult to look at the Sun.The Qur’an is ‘nur’, a coolness of the eyes. Have a look in the Qur’an and see what is the description ofthe Taurat, a guidance which is very difficult as there are so many rules. With sabr you are unhappy but you are patient and Allah subhana wa ta'ala will give you abundantrewards on the Day of Judgment. Sabr - the light is bitter and there is heat. You deal with the things youdon’t like with sabr.9

An Nawawi Forty HadithWhat do you need to change in your life?May Allah subhana wa ta'ala make us among the sabireen and make us to benefit from this nAl HissiyTangible (outer self)ImanAl Ma’nawiAbstract (inner self)Fill the MeezanAl-HamduliLlah: PraiseAl HamduliLlahAl Tahmid*Allah’s Names *Allah’s Attributes*Allah’s Actions *Allah’s Commands*Allah’s DecreeFill the space between the Heavens & the Earth.SubhanAllah:Al Tahmid Al TasbihAl HamduliLlah*Negates all the imperfections towards AllahSubhanAllah*Negates all the imperfect attributes towards Allah*Negates Allah resembling His creationMoonLight inSalatNur*in the Heart*in the Grave*on the Day of JudgmentLightProofCharityBurhanTruthfulness of your faithSunlightSabrDhiy’a*Light to see*Hard to look at the sun – difficult to be sabrAl TuhurPurification(avoiding sin)Ya Rabbi, increase me in guidance and keep me on the way of guidance until the last moment of my life.
