keeWelifildWssneerildWofrytoThe SBy Brandon Barnes (event coordinator)Not many events can lay claim to having an intimaterelationship with the area in which they take place. Perhapsno such event is more intimately tied to a place than theCity of Pigeon Forge’s Wilderness Wildlife Week. In theevent’s 27-year history, people have traveled from as far asAustralia, Canada, China, England and New Zealand to takepart in the five-day festival of honoring and celebratingthe great outdoors, including our very own Great SmokyMountains National Park.As such, it is important for event attendees to knowthe story of how Wilderness Wildlife Week came to be oneof Pigeon Forge’s flagship events. In 1987, Ken Jenkins, who many of you know as “TheFather of Wilderness Wildlife Week,” began presentingevening programs at his gallery, Beneath the Smoke. These evening programs, while well-attended and popular, helped Ken realize how much he enjoyed imparting hisknowledge of wilderness and wildlife to others.events to entice visitors to travel to the Great SmokyMountains area, Ken felt his presentations might be a goodway of passing along knowledge while also bringing peopleto the area who have a deep appreciation of the Smokies. As such, Ken Jenkins met with Leon Downey, directorof the Pigeon Forge Department of Tourism, and (then)Assistant Director Kay Powell to discuss the possibility ofworking with Pigeon Forge to craft a free event focusing onpassing the passion of the natural world and the wildernesson to the public. On January 19, 1991, the first Wilderness Wildlife washeld as a half day event and luncheon. With roughly 60people in attendance, the event was considered a successand attendees enthusiastically believed in the WildernessWildlife event. Over time, Wilderness Wildlife Weekbecame a full-fledged week-long event. As time passed and the series of programs continuedto draw interest, the three cities of Sevier County –Sevierville, Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg – committed toproducing Winterfest, a winter-themed event taking placefrom early November through the end of February. While there have been many people who havevolunteered their time and passion to presentingprograms, leading hikes and assisting with behind thescenes event functions, Wilderness Wildlife Week remainsan ever-growing event because of the love and passion forthe event not only from those involved in the process butalso those who attend each year from all around the world. With Winterfest being an event designed to celebratethe best of the winter season, as well as to create other2014 was an important year for Wilderness WildlifeWeek as the event moved to its new home at the LeConte2

Center at Pigeon Forge. Properly utilizing such a stateof-the-art facility, Wilderness Wildlife Week was able tooffer more diverse nature-related programming while stillfocusing on the topics important to the Smokies. Thanksin part to the move to the LeConte Center, WildernessWildlife Week grew to offer more programming than everbefore with more than 400 sessions offered in 2014.In 2015, Wilderness Wildlife Week celebrated its 25thanniversary by announcing its move from January to Maybeginning in 2016 in an effort to celebrate springtimeby engaging all ages to journey into the great outdoorswhether it be by participating in onsite presentations oroutdoor activities and excursions. The 2016 incarnation had a great deal to live up to as itwas the first Wilderness Wildlife Week to take place in May.While some wondered if the move would be beneficial, theoverall results spoke volumes as to the wealth of programsand experiences attendees could enjoy.Whetherembarking on leisurely tubing excursion, embracing anexhilarating rafting adventure, or connecting to old-timeAppalachian entertainment at the first-ever AppalachianHomecoming at Patriot Park, attendees were providednumerous opportunities to connect to the outdoors. As we now celebrate the 27th year of this one-of-akind event, it is worth mentioning that the InternationalFestivals & Events Association awarded Wilderness WildlifeWeek as the Best International Event of 2016. For thosewho are in the events industry to recognize the remarkablework and quality of what Wilderness Wildlife Week hasblossomed into, especially with the event restructuringaround a new season. To be recognized as the best event internationally is amonumental accomplishment and an accolade the entireWilderness Wildlife Week family takes pride in. As welook to the 2017 Wilderness Wildlife Week, our team hasincorporated even more into opening up new programsand outdoor opportunities for the enjoyment of all.3
