STEWARDSHIPPermeable Pavement Systems ReduceStorm Water Run-offBoxley utilized PaveDrain to help the RoanokeValley-Alleghany Regional Commission minimizestorm water run-off from their parking lot and reducestorm water assessment fees.PaveDrain serves as a hardscape surface for theparking lot, but allows for water penetration,preventing surface runoff. Permeable pavementsystems like PaveDrain are considered a best practicefor storm water management, and we applaud theCommission for their forward thinkingand environmental leadership.In many areas, PaveDrain, along with other Boxleypermeable products such as concrete, asphalt andpavers can help organizations reduce storm waterassessment fees. Single stream refers toa system in which all paper fibers, plastics,metals, and other containers are mixedtogether, instead of separated by classificationin the recycling dumpster at Boxley. Singlestream recycling typically reduces transportationcosts and increases the amount of materialsrecycled.Boxley and Goodwill Industries of the Valleysjoined forces in October to bring Bedford andBotetourt County residents a free, convenientand environmentally responsible way todispose of unused electronics.Hosted at the Boxley Support Center, thise-cycling event helped raise awareness ofresponsible electronics disposal. All proceedssupported Goodwill’s job training andemployment programs.Citizens dropped off approximately 5,400pounds of e-waste, appliances and otherhousehold goods in addition to a generousdonation of aviation calibration equipment.5

Thelaunch is dedicated to Joe Gwaltney, a longtimeBoxley vice president, friend and nature lover,who passed away in 2014.There is no cost to use the launch which willmake it easier to canoe, kayak, or tube close tothe region’s urban core along the Roanoke RiverBlueway. Fifty volunteersremoved 2,805 pounds of trash and debris alongmore thana 20-milestretch of theriver. It was ahot, muddyendeavorthatcontinuesto pay hugedividendsfor the river’s eco-system and recreationalenjoyment.Education and OutreachBlue Ridge aggregate hosted tours for morethan 400 Boy and Cub Scouts and students fromarea schools. School visits at all of our aggregatelocations follow our Explore the Earth programwhich meets theVirginia Standardsfor Learningrequirements forEarth Science.Boxley concrete employees participated inthe annual community Touch a Truck event atthe Martinsville Speedway. Touch a Truck is anevent that allows children to see, touch, andsafely explore their favorite big trucks and heavymachinery, aswell as meet thepersonnel whoprotect, serve,and build thecommunity.Boxley concrete employees participated in theRoanoke River clean-up sponsored by the CleanValley Council.
