The title is a HopiIndian word meaning “life out ofbalance.” Created between 1975and 1982, the film is an apocalypticvision of the collision of twodifferent worlds -- urban life andtechnology versus theenvironment.Directed by Godfrey Reggio, withcinematography by Ron Frike anda musical score by Philip Glass.The Dock13

In 2008 he joined The NationalYouth Theatre of Ireland where heperformed Chekov’s The Seagullat Dublin’s Peacock Theatre. Thatsame year he won the JuniorBursary at Sligo Feis Cheoil. In2011 he came second in the AllIreland School Talent Competitionand this year he won North West’sGot Talent. The themes of honour,duty and shame are broughttogether in Puccini’s rich scorewhich combines Eastern andWestern melodies to portraythe jarring collision of the twocultures. Act IEarly 1900’s NagasakiOn a terrace outside a house overlooking the harborB. F. Pinkerton, a US Naval Lieutenant, is inspectingthe house he has leased from a Japanese marriagebroker, Gore, who has also obtained a young geishawife, Cio-Cio-San, and servants for the Lieutenant.Sharpless, the American Consul, arrives and Pinkerton begins to boast about how great the sailor’s life iscollecting women around the world from port to portand, though she does not know it yet, Cio-Cio-Sanis no exception. She believes that the 999-yearmarriage contract Pinkerton has signed is proof ofhis devotion, even though the contract includes achance for annulment at the end of every month.Sharpless warns the young Lieutenant that Cio-CioSan may not be taking the marriage so lightly, butPinkerton brushes him off saying that one day he willmarry a real American wife.Cio-Cio-San is heard singing about her new life.When she reaches the terrace she tells Pinkertonshe was once wealthy but then became a geishaand how happy she is now. Her relatives gossipabout the couple. Quietly she shows Pinkerton herdearest possessions but hides the sword used byher father to commit suicide. Cio -Cio- San explainsher plan to convert to his Christian faith. The ImperialCommissioner performs the wedding and all toast tothe happy couple until The Bonze, a Buddhist priestand Cio-Cio-San’s uncle, scolds the young bride forrenouncing her ancestors’ religion. Angered by thisoutburst, Pinkerton sends his guests away and thecouple are left alone to sing of their love for eachother.21

Act IIOver a year laterInside the house Cio-Cio-San awaits her husband’sreturn from America as Suzuki, Cio-Cio-San’s servant, prays to the gods. Suzuki then shows Cio-CioSan what little money they have left in the hope thatshe will realise Pinkerton is not returning and thatshe needs to move on. Cio-Cio-San tells her servantto have faith and that Pinkerton will return. Sharpless enters with a letter sent by the Lieutenant, butbefore he has the chance to read it, Goro enters witha rich suitor Prince Yamadori. He has been marriedand divorced many times and Cio-Cio-San rejectsthe idea of a new husband. She explains that sheis already married. After Goro and the Prince exit,Sharpless is left to read the letter to Cio-Cio-San,which suggests that her husband may not return toher. Suzuki brings out her baby son, Trouble, insisting that once Pinkerton knows he has a son he willreturn and, if not, she would rather die than go backto the life of a geisha. Seeing her devotion, Sharpless decides not to reveal the full contents of theletter. A signal is heard in the distance announcingPinkerton’s ship’s arrival. Cio-Cio-San is full of joyand excitement and has Suzuki pick flowers. Theythen begin a waiting vigil.In the morning Suzuki insists that Cio-Cio-Sanrest. She departs humming a lullaby to the baby.Sharpless enters the house with Pinkerton while hisnew American wife lingers in the garden. Suzukiagrees to gently break the news to Cio-Cio-San.Pinkerton finding the situation unbearable rushes outof the house. Cio-Cio-San comes in excited to seePinkerton but seeing Kate Pinkerton, she realises thetruth and agrees to give up her baby if the Lieutenantreturns for him. After sending everyone away, shetakes the Tanti sword that her father used to commitsuicide. Choosing to die with honor rather thanlive in disgrace, she gets ready to take her own life.Right then Suzuki places Trouble into the room topersuade Cio-Cio-San not to take her life.22

Sunday 20th July 3pmJessie De Bellis was born in Montevideo,Uruguay. She received her first musicJessie de Bellislessons from her mother when she wasfour. In 1982 a scholarship enabledher to study at the Instituto Superior deClassical Recital fromUruguayan pianist Jessie deBellis followed byperformance from TheRoscommon Solstice Choir.The Landmark Hotel 12 / children 5 / Family of 4 27Musica del Uruguay. Receiving the FirstPrize at the Brasil International PianoCompetition 1983 meant the start of aninternational career. She has performedin some of the greatest concert hallsaround the world both in solo recitalsand with orchestras, performing some ofthe great classical and romantic pianoconcertos including works by Mozart,Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky.24

Drawing CompetitionOn the occasion of the 10th Carrick Water MusicFestival we invited local schools to enter a drawingcompetition on the theme: WATER and MUSIC. Thechildren could draw or paint a picture in an A 4 sizeformat. There were 2 categories: 5 – 8 and 9 – 12years of age. We were delighted to receive 128 entriesfrom several local schools.We want to thank all the children who participated. Thejudges, Karla Lawless, Kathleen Coleman and DervalSymes did not have an easy task to choose thewinners, all the pictures were lovely, colourful andwitty. We thank ALL the children who took part,congratulate the winners and commend all the otherbudding artists on their wonderful efforts. Well done!28
