TheWRC teamed up with the UNMFeminist Research Instituteand the UNM LGBTQ Resourceto offer free events includingHerstoryTrivia,Mocktails,lectures and workshops.2016 FarmworkerAwareness WeekThe College Assistance MigrantProgram(CAMP)honoredFarmworkers during their 3rdannual Farmworker WorkerAwareness Week at UNMto helpbring awareness to the issuesthat farm workers face in theSouthwest while recognizinglocal farmers, and agriculturaladvocatesincludingCesarChavez and Dolores Huerta. Ablood drive, lectures, and filmswere also part of the week.UNM Student Affairs ConnectionAfrican AmericanStudent ServicesBlack History MonthCelebrationAASS celebrated the monthof February with several BlackHistory Month events includingtalks, workshops, movies and afashion show. The month kickedoff with a flag raising ceremonyoutside of Scholes Hall and areception.CEP Honors Dan D.ChavezDr. Dan Chavez, founder andfirst director of the CollegeEnrichment Program at UNMwas honored during a treeplantingceremony.Heiscredited with bringing thisunique program specializingin recruitment, retention andplacementforlow-incomeand minority NM high schoolgraduates to UNM in 1970. Heserved as the CEP director until1990, and recruited over 3,000students to the University. Hispre-college orientation programenhanced college retention withtutoring, counseling, and helpwith employment or admissionto graduate programs.Spring 20162016 Annual ServiceAwardsHuman Resources honoredseveral employees at their annualService Awards Ceremony. Thisannual event recognizes UNMemployees who have served atthe University for 15 years ormore. Good GraciousStudents, staff, pay it forward through kindnessAlternative Spring BreakFor the 6th consecutiveyear, the Dean of Studentsoffice hosted the AlternativeSpring Break (ASB) servicelearning opportunity duringthe University’s Spring Break.Students traveled to NewOrleans, LA to participateincommunityengagementprojects in areas still feeling theeffect of Hurricane Katrina. Thestudents aided in home building,teamwork, and leadership, whileexperiencing historical sitesand culture.BeKind UNM CelebrationFor the seventh year, theDivision of Student Affairspartnered with the UNM BeKindCommittee,whichincludesstaff members, students andthe community, to celebrateNational Random Acts ofKindness Week.Membersdelivered teddy bears and othertoys to Albuquerque PoliceChief Gordon Eden and areacommanders as the final eventof the annual celebration. Thebears will be kept in APD patrolcars to be given to children intraumatic situations to helpease some of the stress. Edensays that The University ofNew Mexico has always had agenerous heart when it comesto the Albuquerque community,and the bears give the policedepartment the opportunity tocomfort the children they dealwith in crisis.UNM Student Affairs ConnectionASUNM Community Experience Spring Storm andFiestasThe Associated Students of UNM (ASUNM) Community Experiencehosted their annual Spring Storm and fiestas—a city-wide annualevent in which countless students, staff, and faculty from UNMparticipate in a one-day service project. This event is a great way ofgiving back to the Albuquerque community. After the communityservices projects are done for the day, participants are treated tothe annual fiestas celebration at Johnson Field.The BeKind UNM team deliver teddy bears to theAlbuquerque Police Department to give to children intraumatic situations.Spring 2016page4
