Goodwill Industries of South Florida revealed onAugust 2013 a new 14 million state-of-the-arthospital laundry plant located at 6201 NW 36thAve. in Miami, FL. The facility will have theability to employ 200 individuals; serve hospitalsand other health industry facilities of all sizesprocessing 40 million pounds of laundry each yearby running double shifts when operating at fullcapacity, providing eco-friendly healthcare laundryand linen services in South FloridaThis laundry is the most modern high-tech plant ofits type in the nation with a high level of energyefficiency and features many safeguards–such asbackup generators – to ensure a smooth operation under adverse conditions, even during andafter hurricanes. It has been built following a blueprint with the latest technologies andinnovations, and its advanced automation will help streamline production and provide a majorcompetitive advantage in quality, efficiency and price.Besides servicing the larger hospitals, the facility will feature a parallel system of washing anddrying equipment to process smaller contracts such as those from rehabilitation centers, neighborhood clinics, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and hospitals with fewer beds. This dual washing line will help maintain the same cost-effectiveness and efficient serviceenjoyed by high volume customers. The 50,000-square-foot processing plant is separated into a clean and a soil/soiled side. Acomputerized system of belts and hanging bags moves the sheets, blankets, patient gowns, pillowcases and hand and bath towels from the truck-sized washers in the soil/soiled section tothe 10 dryers in the clean section.3

The Laundry Division of ARCO/Murray retrofitted the existing warehouse building toaccommodate new Milnor washroom equipment, Chicago Dryer Co. finishing equipment, and ETech soil and clean rail systems, all provided and installed by Miami-based distributor SteinerAtlantic. Two 240-pound barrier washer-extractors—teamedwith four 120-pound gas dryers, all from Milnor—enable the operation to run express loads, rewash, stain and other specialty formulas as required. But the workhorses of the operation are the two 8modules, 150-pound Milnor Pulse Flow Tunnels(PBW ). They’re each capable of processing up to4,700 poundsan hour, andare expected to save Goodwill 15 million gallons of freshwater. The tunnels are loaded with an E-Tech overhead railsystem automatically calling for paired slings (like goods);this sequencing ensures the proper mix of goods isprocessed to maximize flow to downstream finishing areas. Two 56-bar extraction presses and 10 pass-through dryerswith 200-320 pounds of capacity, also from Milnor, roundout this part of the system.Adequate rail space is provided toaccommodate 21,000 pounds of clean linenstorage, folder, and hand-folding station. Theclean-side storage system includes 70 slingsand trolleys at 300 pounds capacity each.Large-piece iron-dry slings are staged directlyon two storage rails at the two Chicago Cascade linen separators. Small-piece iron-dryslings are directed to the dedicated small-pieceironer.4

Three Chicago flatwork ironing lines eachinclude an Edge Maxx corner less spreader-feeder,FasTrak spreader-feeder and a Rapid Feed withvacuum for small-piece feeding. Sheets and smallpiece goods are automatically processed throughthree 2-roll, 52-inch Powerhouse self-containedgas-heated ironers. Sheets are folded, stacked anddelivered to a main conveyor through two Skylineautomatic folders, and small pieces are folded andautomatically stacked on a Skyline SP-4 ready fordelivery onto a main conveyor.Equipment to process fully dried goods includes two Blanket Blaster folders, three Skyline Minifolders for knitted fitted sheets, six Chicago Air Express high-speed folders, and a Chicago AirXL for large items.Kemco water systems, Cleaver-Brooks boilers, and Ingersoll Rand air compressors wereinstalled in the new mechanical room.5
