Applications and Huber ProductOfferings for Flame Retardance andSmoke Suppression1. Fiberglass Reinforced Polyester Molding and PultrusionGround ATH 3 to 25 microns SB grades Micral grades MoldX Optimized ATH gradesATH is a cost-effective, non-reactive flame retardant used in a wide variety of moldingcompounds. Huber has a complete range of particle sizes to allow the compounderto achieve high loadings of ATH which improve flame retardant performance andreduce the amount of resin in SMC, BMC, pultrusion and other molding applications.2. Wire and Cable CompoundsTreated precipitated and ground ATHUntreated ATH 1-6 micronsTreated and untreated MDHMolybdates Hymod gradesHydral and Micral gradesVertex and Zerogen gradesKemgard gradesWire and cable applications require flame retardance and low-smokegeneration. Huber has a broad line of molybdate, ATH and MDH productsthat impart outstanding smoke suppression in thermoplastic wire and cableproducts. Especially in high-performance applications, chemically-treated ATHand MDH products offer these advantages compared with untreated ATH: Improves dispersion uniformity .Increases color stability Higher throughput rates Improves physical properties and Enhances flame retardant performance electrical performance3. Engineering ThermoplasticsTreated MDHMolybdates Vertex grades Kemgard gradesThe MDH decomposition temperature of 330 C (626 F) makes it ideal foruse in thermoplastic systems which compound at high temperatures such as: Polypropylene Polycarbonate Polyamide Polybutylene Terephthalate (PBT)Huber’s product line includes specialty-treated MDH products which workwell in polyamide systems. Polyamide formulations containing Kemgard 981 and antimony oxide have improved thermal stability properties versususing antimony oxide alone.4. Roofing MembranesUntreated ATHTreated ATHTreated MDH products Micral grades Hymod grades Vertex 60 seriesHuber developed surface-modified ATH and MDH products to provideoutstanding physical properties, water-resistance, fast dispersion and flameretardant performance for membranes used in roofing applications. MDH isan excellent flame retardant, but its high polarity surface makes it somewhatincompatible with low polarity elastomers such as EPDM rubber andthermoplastic polyolefin (TPO). Treating the surface of the MDH allows itsflame retardant performance to be incorporated into roofing membranes.4

5. Silicone RubberTreated precipitated and ground ATH Hymod SP and SG gradesATH is used in silicone rubber to reinforce the compound and impartarc track resistance. In order to achieve outstanding physical and electricalperformance in peroxide-cured silicone rubber compounds, Huber developedits SP surface treatment products. Its low-surface energy facilitates mixingand allows for high filler loadings. The compounds do not stick to moldsand remain very hydrophobic. Hymod M9400 SP is specifically designedfor high voltage silicone rubber insulators.6. RubberUntreated ATHTreated ATHMolybdates SB and Hydral grades Hymod grades Kemgard gradesATH is commonly used in organic rubber compounds such as EPDM, EVA and SBRfor smoke suppression and flame retardance in applications such as belts, hosesand carpet backing. An example is the mining industry, which has established newnon-halogen fire retardant Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA)requirements. ATH and Kemgard products can be used in mining applications.7. Adhesives, Caulks and SealantsUntreated ATHTreated ATHMolybdates SB and Micral grades Hymod grades Kemgard gradesSome adhesives, caulks and sealants used for automotive and buildingmaterial applications are required to meet certain criteria for flameretardance and low-smoke generation.8. Carpet Backing and TextilesUntreated ATHMolybdates SB grades Kemgard gradesLatex, urethane and vinyl binders, used in fabric and carpet manufacturing, are flammable. Coarse ATH is a standard flame retardant for commercialand industrial carpet applications, and molybdates help to reduce smokegeneration.9. CoatingsUntreated ATH SB , Micral and SpaceRite gradesSB-432 is the standard ATH grade that has been used for elastomeric roof coatingsfor over 20 years. Gel coats used in thermoset applications often contain ATH.Fine particle size grades of ATH such as SpaceRite S-3 can effectively extendwhite and color pigments in coatings while maintaining high gloss.5
