Initially, our thoughts were – quite rightly – focused onthe medical emergency faced by our doctors, nurses, healthcare professionals and manyothers in the front line. At the time of writing, thatfocus has shifted to mitigating and recoveringfrom the financial impacts of the pandemic.Banks and bankers will play (and have alreadyplayed) a key role alongside government to helprebuild businesses, communities and personalfinances. Our professionalism and purpose willbe just as important as that displayed by ourmedical colleagues, and many other key workers. As the world’s leading professional body forbankers, we have focused our recent efforts onensuring we provide you, our members, withsupport and guidance during these difficult andunprecedented times.2This has included developing and sharinglearning resources to help you, your organisationand your customers respond to currentchallenges; and maintaining the delivery of ourlearning and assessments to our members andstudents worldwide. The Charter is a significant commitment fromChartered and professional bodies in the UKand internationally, to integrating green financeand sustainability into their curricula, newqualifications, and the continued professionaldevelopment of their members. Our Institute was one of the first to moveaway from traditional exam diets (where largenumbers of candidates gather in a room on a setdate) more than a decade ago. At the beginningof this year, we introduced a remote invigilationservice, allowing candidates to choose a date, time and location that suits them. We didn’tforesee the lockdowns around the world. Butour early adoption of remote invigilation meantwe have been able to continue to deliver ourexams with little disruption. Moreover, there is a lot of evidence that youngpeople – the future of our banking profession– will be disproportionately impacted by Covid-19. The impact on ethnic minorities and otherdisadvantaged groups may be particularly severe. This is why initiatives such as the CharteredBanker 2025 Foundation, supporting youngpeople from disadvantaged backgrounds, areso vital. We need to ensure that the future ofbanking is one that reflects and celebrates thediversity of our world. The international influence and collaboration wehave been building through our partnershipswith professional bodies in Australia, theBahamas, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Malaysia,Malta, New Zealand, Pakistan and Taiwan hasbeen a continued focus for our Institute. Weare now proud to have both students andprofessionally qualified members in 108countries, up from 87 countries last year; all ofwhom share a common commitment to theChartered Banker Code of Professional Conduct, and to our growing, global family of members. As we look ahead, the key theme runningthrough all we do, from our qualifications andlearning, our member benefits and services toour events, will be that of ‘responsible banking’as the world economy to be led by professionalbankers – by Chartered Bankers, by members ofour Institute. We continue to stand full square behind thedevelopment of green and sustainable finance.Having launched the Green Finance Certificate,we recently updated it and relaunched it as theCertificate in Green and Sustainable Finance. Wewere one of the first organisations to endorsethe Principles for Responsible Banking and arepromoting these to our members and throughour international networks. We also led theformation of the Green Finance EducationCharter, launched virtually at the end of June2020.I hope you enjoy finding out more about theopportunities open to you as a Chartered Bankermember in this booklet and feel inspired toexplore the Chartered Banker website to findout more. And thank you for your contributionto making the Institute such an important andvibrant community.Simon Thompson FCBIChief Executive3

As the largestprofessional body for bankers in the UK, we have a responsibility to makesure that our members have a ‘safe’ forum to raise concerns, as well as todiscuss any professional ethical dilemmas, and whether or not to reportthem if unsure. Our initiative, Speak Out, launched in September 2018 andis aimed at providing an alternative route for members to air professionalconcerns and receive signposting support about workplace issues. Please make sure you familiarise yourself with how to Speak Out here.89

Membership Opportunities2025 Foundation Mentors:We have recently added the option on our mentoring platform to register to becomea mentor for the 2025 Foundation. This is a great opportunity for our members to bemore involved with the Institute and provide invaluable support to a young person from adisadvantaged background. Formally established at the end of 2016, the 2025 Foundationaims to identify and support talented young people who would benefit from financial andother support to start to pursue a career in banking. This 'other support' includes providinga suitable mentor as we see this as critical to helping the young person navigate thebanking industry and build their network. We therefore wish these mentors to be drawnfrom members of the Chartered Banker Institute and would welcome your involvement. Emma Dullaghanwho is a 2025FoundationScholar and iscurrently a partof the Mentoringprogrammeshared herthoughts on howimportant it is tohave a mentor:“Having a mentorallows me toreceive unbiased, constructive feedback froma different perspective than I would get fromanyone else I know. My mentor has abreadth of experience and knowledge ontopics that otherwise I would not have accessto and they can give me personalisedguidance on what I am currently doing andsteps I can take to further my career.”10We askedVincent JanCordenio thesame questionand his replywas: “Having amentor ispriceless andinvaluable andthis isparticularlyevident to me asa student. Weoften find that we must be focused andcareful with how we spend our time, andtherefore having a mentor is a unique andamazing opportunity. It's important to me asit allows me to gain quality guidance andsupport from a trusted Institute member whohas a wealth of experience behind them.Whether it be in regard to career advice or lifedecisions, I consistently learn a great dealfrom my mentor, and it gives me a definitiveadvantage as I grow at an accelerated paceas a result.”Mentoring:We are delighted to be able to offer theChartered Banker Mentoring Programmeas a benefit to our members.
