Hartwick’s HistoryModern-day Hartwick College is a nationally ranked, selective, liberal arts and sciences college, the roots of which reach backto the founding of Hartwick Seminary through the will of John Christopher Hartwick. A Lutheran minister who arrived fromGermany in 1746, Hartwick led several mission congregations of early settlers along the Hudson and Mohawk rivers in whatis now upstate New York. His dream of establishing an institution of higher learning became a reality shortly after his deathwith the founding of the seminary in 1797. The New York State Legislature in 1816 incorporated the new school — the firstLutheran seminary in America — as a classical academy and theological seminary. The Seminary and Academy had a long and useful history, training more than 300 ministers and educating over 3,000 youngmen and women. In the mid-1920s, Lutheran leaders in the state decided to add a four-year “college department.” With thesupport of the church and a group of local citizens, Hartwick College opened in 1928 in Oneonta, just a few miles from theoriginal site of the Seminary. In 1968, the College and the Lutheran Church concluded that the time had come for an amicable separation, and Hartwickbecame an independent college. Hartwick College remains committed to liberal arts preparation that is enriched throughfaculty-facilitated experiences such as study abroad, advanced research, and community-based service learning.Presidents of the CollegeDr. Charles Myers 1927–1929Dr. Charles W. Academic RegaliaThe caps, gowns, and hoods worn at college and university functions date back to the Middle Ages, when the masters andscholars wore clerical attire every day to keep themselves warm in the damp, drafty castles and halls of learning. Thistradition was carried over to American institutions, but since the Civil War the donning of regalia has been reserved forspecial ceremonies.Black is the recommended color for all caps and gowns, although many universities have authorized doctoral gowns madein each school’s color. The bachelor’s gown, normally worn closed in the front, is distinguished by long pointed sleeves. Themaster’s gown has oblong sleeves, while the doctoral sleeve is bell shaped; both gowns are designed to be worn open orclosed. Other special features of the doctoral gown are the black velvet facing on the front and the three velvet bars acrossthe sleeve in either black or the representative color of the individual’s discipline. The most distinguishing feature of the regalia is the hood, the velvet binding of which varies in length and width to indicatea bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree (the longer and wider the binding, the higher the degree). The color of the bindingdesignates the discipline in which the degree was earned—for example, white for the arts, letters, and humanities; light bluefor education; brown for the fine arts; apricot for nursing; blue for philosophy; sage green for physical education; and goldenyellow for science. The colored chevrons lining the hood indicate the institution from which the degree was received.Honor cords designate those students who have achieved high academic standing or who are members of academic honorsocieties. The color indications are: Anthropology (bright yellow); Beta Beta Beta, Biology Honor Society (red/green);Chemistry (teal); Computer and Information Sciences (maroon/white); Omicron Delta Epsilon, Economics (gold); SigmaTau Delta, English (cardinal/black); Alpha Psi Omega, Honor Society for Theatre Arts (blue/amber); Phi Alpha Theta, History(Madonna red/gray-blue); Sigma Beta Delta, International Honor Society for Business, Management, and Administration(gold/green); Kappa Mu Epsilon, National Mathematics Honor Society (pink/silver); Pi Kappa Lambda, Honor Society forMusic (white/gold); Omicron Rho Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (orchid/white); PiSigma Alpha, Political Science Honor Society (red/black/white); Languages (white); Psi Chi, Psychology Honor Society(yellow); Sociology (blue-green); and Hartwick College Honors Program (blue/white). Gold tassels are the symbol of themembers of the Hartwick College Honor Society.Six students in each graduation class are named John Christopher Hartwick Scholars by virtue of their high academicstanding, character, leadership, and service. Those six graduates are entitled to wear the John Christopher HartwickScholar’s medallion.

The Hartwick BellFor much of the history of Hartwick College, the ringing of a bell has had an important place in academic life. Thebeginning of the Commencement ceremony is signaled by the tolling of the Hartwick Bell, which was cast in the Troy, NewYork, foundry of Julius Hanks at the direction of Trustee Chairman John G. Knauff and bears the inscription “HartwickSeminary-1815, J. Hanks. J. G. Knauff Executor.” The bell hung atop the main building of the Seminary from 1815 untilthat structure was razed and the College and Seminary were consolidated in 1947. It now hangs in the Yager Hall belfry as asymbol of the College’s heritage. The Commencement Bell TraditionGeneration upon generation of Hartwick scholars have heard the ringing of the bell and known that it leads them away fromthis community of scholars and into the world in which they are destined to make their mark. The students making thistransition today will receive a replica bell, which symbolizes their introduction into the vast, proud community of HartwickCollege alumni, and the roles that the bell and the College over which it keeps watch have played in shaping their lives. Thistradition offers a tangible connection to the storied past of Hartwick College and a physical reminder of the countless lessonslearned on Oyaron Hill. The Hartwick MaceThe mace, now used traditionally as a symbol of authority in the manner of a royal scepter, has evolved from the spikedbattle mace of the Middle Ages. The Hartwick College mace, in form a symbol of strength and uprightness, is carved by handfrom black ebony, which is known as the king of woods. The mace was designed and executed by Assistant Professor of ArtEarl Cunningham in 1967. The dome shape of the top of the mace carries with it a relationship to the church in general. Inlaidin the dome is the Lutheran Coat of Arms, symbolizing Hartwick’s tradition as a Lutheran institution. The coat of arms is executed in cloisonné, the traditional technique of joining metal and enamel in design. Around the cylindrical shape, just underthe dome, are affixed bronze versions of the Hartwick College seal, the Hartwick Academy seal, and the Hartwick Seminaryseal, which jointly symbolize significant dates and developments in the history of Hartwick College.Commencement PhotographsHartwick has retained the professional commencement photography services of Genesee Photo Systems. Each graduatewill be photographed prior to crossing the stage, and when receiving their diploma. A few days following the ceremony, thegraduates will be notified by email when images are available to view and purchase online. The website for Genesee Photo Systems is www.geneseephoto.com.
