Force and Motion Notes

NEW UNIT!STEPS:1. TURN TO THE NEXT CLEAN PAGE IN YOURJOURNAL2. GLUE THE TITLE PAGE AND THEANTICIPATION GUIDE IN3. COMPLETE THE ANTICIPATION GUIDE.4. BE READY TO TAKE NOTES

Questions to discuss: How do forces affect the motion of an object? How do the laws of motion apply to every day life?

Unit 5 Force and MotionLearning Goals (TEKS): Force, motion, and energy. Thestudent knows that there is a relationship between force, motion, and energy. The student is expected to: 8.6B differentiate between speed, velocity, and acceleration 8.6A demonstrate and calculate how unbalanced forceschange the speed or direction of an object’s motion 8.6C investigate and describe applications of Newton’s lawof inertia, law of force and acceleration, and law of actionreaction such as in vehicle restraints, sports activities, amusement park rides, Earth’s tectonic activities, androcket launches

Sir Isaac Newton(1643 – 1727) One of the world’sgreatest scientists Developed the 3 Laws ofMotion

What is a Force? A force is a push or pull Whenone object pushes orpulls another object, the firstobject is exerting a force on thesecond object Forces are described bystrength and direction And are drawn with arrows

Forces are measured in Newtons SI unit of force Symbol: N Measured by using a spring scale

There are two types of forces Balanced Forces(No change in motion)No Acceleration! UnbalancedForces(Change in Motion)Acceleration!

Net Force We calculate forces using net force. The overall force on an object after all theforces acting on it are added is called the netforce.Net Force 3N

Balanced Forces and Motion Are equal forces actingon one object inopposite directions. Equal forces acting onan object will notchange the object’smotion. The net force is 0(zero).Net force 0 (push)Net force 0 (pull)

Balanced Forces There is no change in motion

Unbalanced Forces and Motion Can cause an object to: start movingstop movingchange direction or speed. When two forces act in the same direction, theyadd together. When forces act in opposite directions yousubtract the forces. If one force is greater than the other force, the overall force isin the direction of the greater force.

Unbalanced Forces The forces acting on an object are not equal When a net force greater than 0 acts on an objectthe forces are UNBALANCED. One or more force is stronger than others Change in Motion occurs

How to calculate net force Once again - the net force is the overall force ortotal amount of force acting on an object (acombination of the magnitude and direction) For example, in this tug of war, the net force is 3Nto the leftThe forces arein oppositedirections.Subtract thenumbers.5N2N

More examples of net force calculations Two people are trying to push away a box full ofrotting eggs, who ends up with the box?Sam10NOmar15N If there are two people trying to get this box full ofmoney, who ends up with it?Lauren20NOlivia30N

Calculating Force Force mass x accelerationDon’t forget the units!

Let’s examine the Spring Scale more closely Definition: A spring scale is a tool used to measure force. It works in the same way the rubber band does. Thespring inside it stretches based on the amount of forceadded to it. Use will use a spring scale in the lab today

Simple Machines and ForcesInclined PlaneLeverScrewPulleyWedgeWheel and Axle

So what is a simple machine and whatmakes them so simple ? A simple machine hasfew or no movingparts. They often use only theforce (effort) of aperson to do the work. Simple machines makeour effort easier.

Why are they so important? Simple machines are important becausethey can make a physical job easier bychanging the magnitude (amount of work)or the direction of the force exerted to dowork. The amount of force output is greater thanthe size of the force you put in.

Why Use Simple Machines? For the mechanical advantage Making something easier to do,but it takes a little longer to do it For example, going up a longer flightof stairs instead of going straight up aladder

Force and Motion LabEXPLORATORY STATIONS

Journal In table of contents “Forces Lab” On the next clean page, write forthe title “Forces Lab”

Lab explanation and expectations This is a rotating station lab You will be timed. When the timer goes off, moveto the next station in numerical order. Forexample, if you start at Station 2, your nextrotation is to Station 3. If you are not following expectations for labs, I willhave you sit out Use the spring scales and all supplies appropriately

In your Journal: Write down stations 1-6 leaving room to answer 2-4 questions for each station – you may need 2pagesStation1Station 2Station 3Station 4

Station 1 - Ball1. Place the ball on the counter, where the “X” is.2. Write in your journal: Is this an example of balanced orunbalanced force? Why?3. GENTLY bounce the ball so that it bounces up from thefloor to your hand.4. Draw the movement in your journal and label thedirection of forces.5. Write in your journal: Is this movement an example ofbalanced or unbalanced force? Why?

Station 2 - Dominoes1. Set up the dominoes in a row so that they willtouch each other when they fall.2. Write in your journal: What type of force is goingto make the dominoes fall?3. Knock the dominoes over.4. Draw your domino set up in your journal and drawarrows to show the direction of movement.

Station 3 – Velcro Paddle and BallWith a lab partner: play catch 2 or 3 times.Write in your journal answers to these:1. What is the force that makes the ball stop?2. Is there a different force making the ball falltowards the ground? What is it called?3. When the paddle stops the ball, is that forcemoving in the same direction as the ball?

Station 4 – Spring ScaleOne person holds the spring scale while anotherperson puts weights on the scale.Write these down in your journal:1. What does the spring scale measure?2. Write down the Force in Newtons (N) for eachweight.Weight:Force (N):1. 100g2. 200g3. 500g

Station 5 – Force Problems Work theseproblems –1. Draw the boxesand arrows, including theforces in Newtons.2. Show your mathwork!

Station 6 – Tug of War! View the picture and then sketch it in your journal:TabithaZach Tabitha and Zach are playing tug-of-war. If Zachpulls the rope to the right with a force of 800N andTabitha pulls the rope to the left with a force of800N, what will happen to the flag in the middle ofthe rope? Write this sentence and fill in the blanks: “The flagwill because.

Station 3 –Velcro Paddle and Ball With a lab partner: play catch 2 or 3 times. Write in your journal answers to these: 1. What is the force that makes the ball stop? 2. Is there a different force making the ball fall towards the ground? What is it called? 3. When the paddle stops the ball, is that force moving in the same direction as the ball?

Simple Harmonic Motion The motion of a vibrating mass-spring system is an example of simple harmonic motion. Simple harmonic motion describes any periodic motion that is the result of a restoring force that is proportional to displacement. Because simple harmonic motion involves a restoring force, every simple harmonic motion is a back-

Force and Motion SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 10 FORCE AND MOTION In the previous lesson you have learnt about the motion of a body along a straight line. You also know that motion can be uniform or non-uniform. You might have seen that a body at rest can be brought to motion and a moving body can be brought to rest.

Lesson 14: Simple harmonic motion, Waves (Sections 10.6-11.9) Lesson 14, page 1 Circular Motion and Simple Harmonic Motion The projection of uniform circular motion along any axis (the x-axis here) is the same as simple harmonic motion. We use our understanding of uniform circular motion to arrive at the equations of simple harmonic motion.

Motion-Based Motion Deblurring Moshe Ben-Ezra and Shree K. Nayar,Member, IEEE Abstract—Motion blur due to camera motion can significantly degrade the quality of an image. Since the path of the camera motion can be arbitrary, deblurring of motion blurred images is a hard problem. Previ
