ConceptsAGUIDETOBETTERLUBRICATIONV O L U M E 2 1 , N O. 1Lincoln Industrial:The Mining Industry’s StandardNearly a century of experience.Superior products. The world’s bestservice network. In the never-stopmining industry, where hugemachines must keep producing inincredibly demanding conditions,Lincoln Industrial products arethe industry standard for miningcompanies and original equipmentmanufacturers alike. From automated systems like Centro-Matic ,Helios and Quicklub to SystemSentry II control units, the GearSpray System, PowerMaster pumpsand mobile lube trucks, theindustry counts on the qualityand reliability of Lincoln Industrialproducts and worldwide service. With Lincoln on their team, mining companies turn theincreased production ofmobile machines, conveyorsand draglines into savingson their bottom lines.Dan Rambo, a Kindill minesuperintendent, says, “Idon’t think there’s anythingout there as good asLincoln.” Bob Gregor, chiefproduct engineer forBucyrus International, which has installed LincolnIndustrial systems fordecades, says, “Lincolnsystems have been doingDan Rambo and Kindill’sBucyrus-Erie 2550-W dragline. Itboasts a 100-ton bucket and LincolnIndustrial’s Centro-Matic system.the job for Bucyrus for a long time.We haven’t found anything better.”Recent independent lab tests(see page 3) reveal that the heartof Lincoln’s automated systems—the precision injectors the companyinvented—may be copied, butnever duplicated. Lincoln Industrialinjectors lasted more than twice aslong as the competition. In fact, allLincoln injectors were still workingwhen the tests ended! The testsshow that anyone gamblingtremendously expensive miningequipment on anything but LincolnIndustrial injectors plays a riskygame of “lubrication roulette.”(continued on page 2)“I don’t thinkthere are anylubricationsystems asgood as LincolnIndustrial’s . . .”Dan RamboKindill #3 Mine Superintendent,Indiana, U.S.A.

Using our completerange of quality products, ourdistributors design and installsystems that solve problems, enhance safety and save money. And our recent new productsinclude compact, high-performance hydraulic rotary pumpsand our new automatic systemto deliver a special zinc/copperbased anti-seize grease toblasthole drill threads.Lincoln Industrial’s systems take advantage ofdesigned for mining equipment.special manufacturing processes that maintaina close metal-to-metal fit for high-pressureapplications. The SL injectors last over twiceas long as competitors’ injectors.Lincoln Industrial installed thefirst automated lubricationmining systems a half-centuryago. Our systems remain theindustry’s standard becausespecial manufacturing processesensure a closemetal-to-metal fitfor high-pressureapplications.And onlyLincolnIndustrialIngersoll-Randblasthole drills usePowerMaster pumpsfor lubrication. The final result? Unsurpassedservice and product durabilitythat keep OEMs and end-userschoosing Lincoln Industrialautomated systems. When themining industry has a lubrication problem, it turns toLincoln Industrial because weprovide solutions ourcompetitors can’t match. This edition of Conceptsis full of examples, drawnfrom around the world. They show why LincolnIndustrial, by a wide margin,is number one in mininglubrication systems. This newly-developed pump automatically deliversa special zinc/copper-based anti-seize grease toblasthole drill threads. The pump can generateand withstand 10,000 psi.Information Provided by Lincoln Industrial

Kindill IsIn LincolnIndustrial’sCorner“In my opinion, I don’t thinkthere are any other lube systemsout there,” says Dan Rambo, superintendent of Kindill’s #3mine in Sullivan, Indiana.“I don’t think there are anylubrication systems as goodas Lincoln Industrial’sCentro-Matic system.”Kindill’s giant Bucyrus dragline hasfour PowerMaster pumps for morethan 200 lube points. The lubricatingprocess is controlled and monitored bya System Sentry unit. Jack Ellis, K&MSpecialty Systems, checks the lubesystem before the machines move toa new position.Rambo’s opinion is hardlyunique at Kindill. In thelast 18 months, his mineconverted all loaders, scrapersand preparation plantmachines to Centro-Matic.“Nobody knew how theother system worked,” saysRambo, “and we had troublegetting parts and service.”Lincoln Industrial productsare found throughout Kindill’sthree Indiana mines. Almost alllarge equipment—Bucyrus,Marion, P&H, Caterpillar,Komatsu, Hitachi—has anautomated system, all LincolnIndustrial. Each mine’s lubetrucks have PowerMaster pumps and Lincoln Industrialhose reels. “Pretty much everypump on the job is fromLincoln,” notes Rambo.Kindill’s performance dependson the service provided byK&M Specialty Systems,Lincoln Industrial’s distributor.K&M installs automatedlubrication systems on mobileequipment, updates draglineThe Hitachi 1800 uses a hydraulic Centro-Matic system with a55-gallon drum. The Dart truck has a Quicklub system.systems, does preventivemaintenance, and checks andrebuilds pumps when necessary.“It’s a high level of service theycan’t get elsewhere,” saysK&M’s Jack Ellis. Ramboagrees. “Parts are readilyavailable through K&Mand that’s a big plus,” he says.“I think they do a great job. They’ve certainly neverlet us down.”SevenPowerMaster pumps are oneach Kindill lubetruck. Some alsohave a lower ratiopump tube fortransferring oil.Tests Show Lincoln Industrial Injectors the Industry’s BestRecent independent lab tests showed the superiority of Lincoln Industrial injectors. Here were some results: All Lincoln Industrial injectors were still working when tests ended after 200,000 lubrication cycles. 90% of one competitors’ injectors failed before completing 100,000 cycles; 30% didn’t make50,000 cycles. 60% of a second competitors’ injectors failed before completing 100,000 cycles; 50% didn’t make50,000 cycles; one injector failed before 25,000 cycles.Lincoln Industrial pumps are still the best, too. When we evaluated competitors’ pumps, wediscovered pump ratios inadequate for use in automated lubrication systems, especially in coldclimates. Competitors’ pumps are also difficult to adapt to mining equipment.Information Provided by Lincoln Industrial3

ConceptsA G U I D E T O B E T T E R L U B R I C AT I O NLiebherr MakesLincoln Industrial Its Logistics Partner“Lincoln Industrial is ableto service its products allover the world.”Dieter Mitreiter, Liebherr’s Chiefof Design at Colmar, FranceLincoln Industrial, Walldorf,Germany, has suppliedlubrication systems for LiebherrGroup’s excavators for decades.A major reason, says DieterMitreiter, chief of Liebherr’sdesign office at its plant inColmar, France, is that “LincolnIndustrial is able to service itsproducts all over the world.”Now, because Lincoln has theproducts and flexibility to solveproblems for Liebherr’scustomers, the company ismaking Lincoln its management “partner” at Colmar.“We’ve accepted the addedresponsibility of managing theentire lubrication process forLiebherr’s mining productsmanufactured at Colmar,” saysHerbert Kannegiesser, vicedirector, sales, LincolnIndustrial, Walldorf. The responsibility will besubstantial. Lincoln Industrial,Walldorf, will not only manageall lubrication sub-suppliers thatused to work directly withLiebherr, Lincoln will alsonegotiate prices withLiebherr customers.Lincoln employeeswill work on-site,preinstalling andprebending everyTwo hydraulic barrel pumpsthing so systems areon Liebherr’s 996 excavator.ready to install.Lincoln Industrial’s value-addedservice package will also includepreparation of system drawingsand parts lists, ordering partsand coordinating all partsdeliveries. “Our relationshiphas totally changed,” notesKannegiesser. “We were asub-supplier and now we’re anintegral part of Liebherr’sorganizational structure.”One reason for the changewas Lincoln’s ability to teamwith Liebherr and its largestcustomer, the Dutch company Shipyard De Donge, toend the costly bolt andbearing failures caused by agrease problem because thelarge dredgers often workunder sea water. BecauseLincoln Industrial has theindustry’s only stainless steelblocks, it could help anOEM adapt quickly to solvethe end-user’s problem.Liebherr’s Litronic 996 was introduced at the Baumashow in Munich. Lincoln Industrial designed thelubrication system and delivered its major components.Information Provided by Lincoln Industrial

“Lincoln Industrial systemshave been doing the job forBucyrus and doing it very wellfor a long time.”Caterpillar and Komatsu, theleading manufacturers of largemining equipment, have beenfitting Lincoln Industrial automated lubrication systems ontheir machines at the factory forover a decade. And on smallermachines, where lubricationsystems are optional, if one isinstalled, it’s a Lincoln.Lincoln Industrial’s partnershipwith the two companies isworldwide. A Lincoln CentroMatic system is fitted on allCaterpillar mass excavators andlarge hydraulic shovels made atfacilities in the U.S.A., Belgiumand at a joint venture withMitsubishi in Japan. Whilelubrication systems are optionalon smaller equipment—haultrucks, wheel loaders andhydraulic excavators—the onlychoice is Lincoln’s Quicklub .Lincoln also fits Quicklub onCaterpillar’s Elphinstone underground loaders in Australia andis working with Caterpillar onInformation Provided by Lincoln IndustrialFor nearly four decades, Lincoln Industrial automated systems have lubricatedBucyrus International’s mining equipment. Find a Bucyrus machine andyou’ll almost always find a Lincoln Industrial system. Bucyrus currently installs mostLincoln systems on Bucyrus draglines, shovels and drills right at the company’s factory. Theonly time that doesn’t happen is by customer request—an extremely rare occurrence.Bob Gregor, Bucyrus Chief Product EngineerLincolnIndustrialSystemsAre Standardat Caterpillarand KomatsuBucyrus Stays withLincoln Industrial for Nearly 40 Years“Lincoln Industrial systems have been doing the job for Bucyrus and doing it very well fora long time,” says Bob Gregor, the company’s chief product engineer. “We just haven’t foundanything better. Our reputation is on the line when our equipment goes out there. We relyon Lincoln systems to keep our equipment functioning at peak efficiency year after year.I also like the fact that Lincoln doesn’t standstill. Recently, they supplied us with a new control unit, the System Sentry II. It works betterand costs less, too. Performance and service—that’s a tough combination to beat.”Lincoln Industrial lube systems are factory-fittedon Bucyrus draglines, shovels and drills.how Lincoln Industrialsystems will fit onCat’s new G-serieswheel loaders. The story is the sameat Komatsu. The company and its unionwanted to automate the dangerous job ofhand-lubricating its Komatsu dump trucks andwheel loaders. Todaka chose Centro-Matic forthe job because of its proven results on miningmachines, and because Komatsu, experiencedwith other systems, only recommendsCentro-Matic for its mining machines.Masaaki Shibata (left) and Tahito Koyama oversee Todaka’smining vehicles.
