Letter from the Board ChairDear Friends,Our communities faced incredible challenges during 2020 due tothe COVID-19 public health and economic crisis. You, our areabusinesses, nonprofits, and individuals, came together to help eachother and protect the most vulnerable in our communities. This year, the Foundation played a prominent role in addressing theneeds of those most impacted by the COVID-19 virus. Ourgrantmaking efforts were strategically aimed at assisting individualsand area nonprofits who were struggling to make ends meet. OurCommunity Response Fund mobilized 156,000 and 28 grants forarea nonprofits affected by the pandemic and our Sharing Fundprovided 101,000 and 213 grants for individuals in the communitythat experienced crises during 2020. In addition, we were able tocarry on with our normal scholarship and grant cycle. None of ourwork during this year would have been possible without committeddonors and dedicated community partners from every sector. The last year was also a year of change for the CommunityFoundation as we welcomed new leadership; Susan Lynch as theFoundation Director and Mindy Nuhring as Chief DevelopmentOfficer. We are confident they will manage the changing needs ofthe Foundation exceedingly well and continue its critical communityimpact work into the future.Thank you for your continuedpartnership and unwaveringcommitment to our community.Because of you, we can continueto serve our community’s needs, while building a more vibranttomorrow for all who call this areatheir home.Rhett Johnson2020 Board ChairElizabeth BogdanovichEdward BolfLisa BoltonJoan Sailer BondTim & Joan BonnerChere BosargeJason BoserKathryn R BoundsJoel & Laura BoydJim & Catherine BozichRandall & Ann BraiedyMatt & Charity BranstadNan BrierleySheila BroggerAmy Sader BrownLevi BrownJudith Brown-WescottBSN SportsDennis & Mary Ann BuckleyKelly BuckleyShannon BuddeTraci BuescherBurgess Family FoundationSteve BurggrafJim & Ann CarlsonTimothy & Kelly CarlsonCARQUEST Auto PartsJeff & Amy CarterHelen CasperMarvin & Catherine CastleMichael & Heidi ChandlerDale & Misty ChristyGloria ChristyCitizen for John PersellCity of CohassetCity of Grand RapidsClairmont Financial AdvisorsAnn ClarkWanda E ClarkDee ClausenDavid & Nancy ClaussenJames & Cora ClaypoolJill N ClaypoolCleveland-Cliffs FoundationCLK Management Co., Inc.Clover Technologies Group LLCMary Kate ColeWilliam ColemanCole's HardwareSean & Sherry ColterMike ComstockRobert ConzemiusJeanne CookSarah CopelandCountry Kitchen RestaurantClare CroteauBeverly CulverRichard & Sandra CurryJosephine & Travis CzernySondra DahlDavid W. This was a favorite Bible verse of ArdellSimonson, a Grand Rapids native who passed away in July 2020after dedicating his life to educating young people. Ardell’s sisters,Betty (Jim) Wass and LuElla McDowell recently established ascholarship fund in Ardell’s honor at the Grand Rapids AreaCommunity Foundation. The Ardell Simonson Memorial Scholarshipis for Itasca County area students that intend to obtain a degree inElementary Education.Betty Wass says Ardell was a man who started out with nothing anddidn’t do a lot of things for himself throughout his life, but he savedwhat he had and was able to leave a legacy for young people. Hewas always helping and serving others – it’s “just who he was.” Thisscholarship for young students to pursue their dream of getting anElementary Education degree would have been exactly what hewanted.Jim and Betty Wass, LuElla McDowell, and Susan Lynch of GRACFBetty Wass, Ardell Simonson andLuElla McDowellAdam KrookAndrew S KuehnRichard & Jennifer KyllanderL&M Supply - Grand RapidsChari LaDuke-ClarkLadyslipper FundDavid & Kathryn LaFondLake Country Furniture, Inc.Lake Country PowerJon & Rochelle LangloisMariah LaPatkaRebecca LaPlantBob & Kim LaReauDawn Renae LarsonJane LatimerLatvala LumberMary Jane & Robert LatvalaTerrance & Kathleen LaValleLeech Lake HousingMichael & Martha LentzDon & Sandra LeyDavid & Susan LickLidahl Dental P. However, without continued donations the fund wasstarting to diminish. Then in 2020, something wonderful happened.Jerry and Shirley Miner, local citizens who are highlycommunity-minded and always thinking philanthropically, decidedthat they were interested in growing the Reif Dance CompanyScholarship Fund. They had four grandchildren who had been inReif Dance and knew what a benefit Reif Dance was to thosegrandchildren. In February of 2020, Jerry and Shirley donated 100,000 to create the Reif Dance Company Endowed Scholarship. This means that the Reif Dance Company Scholarships will beavailable to Reif Dance Company students for the foreseeablefuture. Thank you, Jerry and Shirley Miner!

Scholarship SpotlightSarah Jensen—Recipient of the Dr. andMrs. Kelly Scholarship Awards MedicalScholarship 2020“My story is one of which I am very proud. Iam a wife and a mother of three beautifulchildren. I have worked very hard to bewhere I am today. I was born and raisedhere in Grand Rapids and in 2008, aftergraduating high school, I moved to the TwinCities. I worked full-time, and was in schoolfull-time. I had to put my education on holdin 2012 when I had my first child. Life was astruggle; I had to work many jobs to supportus. I decided that I needed to make achange and challenged myself to get backto school to provide a better life for my daughter. I started classes thatspring at Dakota County Technical College. That fall was when I met mynow husband and moved back to Grand Rapids where I enrolled in thePractical Nursing Program at Itasca Community College.I now work at KOOTASCA Community Action and I am proud to be ableto help support my community in the way my community supportedme. I am back in school and finishing my prerequisites for the RNprogram at Northwest Technical College. My goal is to become aLicensed Public Health Nurse and School Nurse. I want to use myeducation and skills to help my community by finding more resourcesand access to routine medical care and help in the fight to end povertyand homelessness.I want to keep setting an example for my kids that, no matter yourcircumstances, with hard work and dedication you can overcomeanything. I want them to remember watching me walk in my graduationceremony and be proud of who their mother is and where she camefrom, and what it took to get there.”Dr. and Mrs. Kelly Scholarship Awards Medical ScholarshipsThe Dr. and Mrs. Robert Kelly Scholarship was establishedin May of 1999 to support local adults interested inpursuing and continuing education in the medical field. Many people remember and love Dr. and Mrs. Robert Kellyand can fondly picture them walking through Grand ItascaClinic or the old Hospital. Kelly Kirwin, former ExecutiveDirector of the Grand Itasca Foundation notes, “We are sopleased to be able to bring the legacy of Donna and Dr.Kelly full circle – every year - through Grand Itasca.Because we have a scholarship at the CommunityFoundation, we can honor the life and legacy of the Kellys, provide for better educated and trained professionals atthe clinic and hospital, and support our local workforce andfamilies, right here in rural Minnesota.”Thomas & Kathy PeltierRay & Mary Helen PeltonDelores PelusoPengilly Booster ClubJustin & Lindsey PerataloPatti PerreaultPatrick & Candace PerryKelli PetersCarl Peterson& NicoleWiekamp-PetersonD.
