Paul teaches in AthensBackground information for the teacher is on thelast page.

Paul is still on his second missionaryjourney. He has just left Philippi, which is the chief city of that partof Macedonia, where he was put inprison. After an earthquake Paulteaches the Philippian Jailer andbaptized his whole household. Then Paul travels on to Athens.Paul was in Athens waiting forSilas and Timothy to travelfrom Berea to join him. While Paul was waiting forthem in Athens, he wasdeeply troubled by all theidols he saw everywhere inthe city.He went to the synagogue toreason with the Jews and theGod-fearing Gentiles, and hespoke daily in the public square toall who were there. The Atheniansliked to spend time discussing thelatest ideas.

He also debated with some of theEpicurean and Stoic philosophers. When he told them about Jesusand his resurrection, they said,‘What’s this babbler saying withthese strange ideas?’ Others said,‘He seems to be preaching aboutsome foreign gods.’They took Paul to the highcouncil of the city who asked,‘Tell us about these strangethings and new teaching.’Paul stood and addressed thecouncil: ‘Men of Athens, Inotice that you are veryreligious for as I was walkingalong I saw your many shrines.‘One of your altars had thisinscription on it: To anUnknown God. This God, whomyou worship without knowing,is the one I’m telling you about.

‘One of your altars had thisinscription on it: To anUnknown God. This God,whom you worship withoutknowing, is the one I’mtelling you about.‘He is the God who made theworld and everything in it. SinceHe is Lord of heaven and earth,He doesn’t live in man-madetemples.‘He gives life to everything. From one man He created allthe nations. He controls whennations rise and fall.‘God wants us to seek and findhim. It is in Him we live andmove and exist. As some ofyour own poets have said, “Weare his offspring.” God is not anidol designed by craftsmenfrom gold or silver or stone.

‘God commands everyone torepent of their sins and turnto Him. For He has set a daywhen the world will be judgedby Jesus whom He has raisedfrom the dead.’When they heard Paul speakabout the resurrection of thedead, some laughed incontempt, but others said,‘We want to hear more aboutthis later.’That ended Paul’s discussionwith them. Some, however, became believers includingDionysius, a member of thecouncil and a womannamed Damaris.
