D.C. Office on AgingThe Office on Aging is the District of Columbia’s Agency on Aging thatoversees direct services to persons 60 and older through a Senior ServiceNetwork. Within the Senior Service Network are eight community-basedagencies, funded by the Office on Aging, to provide nutritious and tastymeals, social and recreational activities, as well as information on stayingwell. However, seniors are required to become registered participants inorder to use the services. In-house, the Office on Aging operates two directservices programs: the Senior Employment and Training Program and theInformation and Assistance Unit. The Office on Aging also oversees twonursing homes within the District. Office on Aging Based ProgramsAging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC)This is a one-stop for services assisting the District's elderly and personswith disabilities in maximizing their independence and improving theirquality of life by linking them. with a range of private and public services inone single location. Over a dozen government agencies, private and nonprofit organizations are collaborating with the Aging and DisabilityResource Center to provide District residents with a simple and streamlinedprocess for getting the guidance and information they need. D.C. Office on Aging Nursing FacilitiesWashington Center for Aging Services2601 18th Street, NE Washington, D.C. 20018 (Ward 5)In July of 2010, the District/Office on Aging entered a long-term groundlease with Stoddard Baptist Foundation to operate and manage theWashington Center for Aging Services (WCAS). Previously, the Districtmanaged a contract with VMT to operate the facility on behalf of the city.The decision to move forward with this new public-private partnership doesnot change the fact that the District still owns the facility. WCAS willcontinue to be a Medicare/Medicaid certified facility with 259-beds thatprovides skilled and intermediate nursing care to residents 60 years of ageand older. The facility will also continue to provide geriatric day careservices (adult day care) called "Center Care", an Alzheimer’s special careunit, and offer respite care or short-term relief for caregivers, based onavailability. According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services(CMS), the nursing home has a 3 out of 5 star rating. Previously, the District managed a contract with VMT tooperate the facility on behalf of the city. JB Johnson, a 230-bedMedicare/Medicaid certified facility, will continue to be a District-owned nursingfacility. It will also continue to provide skilled and intermediate nursing care toresidents as young as 18 years of age.According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), this nursingfacility also has a 3 out of 5 star rating. GROUP MEAL PROGRAMS (Congregate Meals)Meals are served in a group setting at various sites around the city. Adviceand guidance on dietary intake are provided to individuals for improvingtheir nutritional status. There is no charge for meals. However,contributions are encouraged.
