Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), the world’s largestcruise industry trade association, has released the 2019 CruiseTrends and State of the Cruise Industry Outlook. 1INSTAGRAMMABLECRUISE TRAVELInstagram photos aredriving interest in travelaround the world. Withonboard connectivity,cruise passengers arefilling Instagram feedswith diverse travelexperiences bothonboard and on landfrom several cruisedestinations.6

2TOTAL RESTORATIONStressed out from fast-paced lives, travelers are seeking ways to checkout from daily responsibilities and rejuvenate more than ever before.Cruise lines are responding by offering total wellness in the form ofrestorative spa experiences, onboard oxygen bars, healthy menuchoices for a wide variety of diets, and the latest in fitness innovations.7

3ACHIEVEMENTOVER EXPERIENCESExperiential travel has evolved into achievement travel asvacationers are looking for experiences beyond sightseeing. Bucketlists have become goal-oriented and cruise lines are meeting thesedemands. Passengers can conquer Machu Picchu or completeculinary workshops hosted by Le Cordon Bleu chefs.8

4ON-BOARD SMART TECHTravelers use tech in daily lives and are expecting smart tech whenvacationing as well. Cruise lines have adopted technology for cruisetravelers—including keychains, necklaces, bracelets, apps andmore—in order to provide a highly personalized travel experiencewhile on and off the ship.9

5CONSCIOUS TRAVELTravelers want to see the world in a conscious, mindful way. The cruiseindustry is more conscientious than ever, working to local destinationsto local cultures, landmarks and minimize environmental footprints.10

6ACCESS IS THE NEW LUXURYTravelers are setting sights on destinations that werepreviously out of reach – some only accessible now bycruise ship – from the Galapagos Islands to Antarctica.11

7GEN Z AT SEAGeneration Z is set to become the largest consumer generation by the year2020—outpacing even Millennials. This generation like the one before, prefersexperiences over material items and is seeking out travel. The appeal ofmultiple destinations and unique experiences, such as music festivals at sea, isattracting this new category of cruisers.12

8OFF PEAK ADVENTURESThe off-peak season is rising in popularity whethertravelers want to escape the cold in a tropical localeor embrace the chill in a new destination. Cruisingoffers some once in a lifetime experiences duringcolder months including excursions to see theNorthern Lights, visiting a penguin colony andtouring European Christmas markets.13

9WORKING NOMADSCombining work with leisure time is on the rise. Straying far from thenotion of device-free travel, many modern travelers or “digital nomads”are opting for trips where they can work remotely which cuts down ontime off and lost wages. With WiFi, desks and work-friendly cafes,travelers can keep up with work while enjoying a cruise vacation.14

10FEMALE-CENTERED CRUISINGWith the number of female travelers growing, many tourism andtravel companies are creating female-centered itineraries based oninterests and connecting women with other women. Femalecentered cruises can create a female empowerment community atsea while allowing travelers to experience the world around them, aswell as famous feminist landmarks.15

11GOING SOLOWith more Google searches for “solo travel”and “traveling alone” than ever before, solotraveling is rising in popularity. Cruisingallows for solo travel without the worry ofarranging a ton of details while visiting eventhe most far-reaching destinations andconnecting with other travelers, formingcommunity bonds and once-in-a-lifetimeexperiences.16
