Therefore, my first priority is starting up my research group here at METUand contributing to Turkish-CERN scientificcollaboration. It requires one-on-one attention with my graduate and undergraduatestudents. It is an amazingly exciting time. What do you do for fun?I love music: I play piano, sing, and amlearning to play the accordion. The language of science, especially of physics, ismathematics. While we cannot expect thepublic to learn the language of mathematics at the level of cutting-edge science,I think it would be possible to conveythe beauty inherent in the equations ofnature–particularly of particle physics–inmusic or other art forms.Tell a surprising anecdote about yourself that few people know.I carried the Olympic Flame on July 6,2004, in Üsküdar, Istanbul, on its way toAthens. Before this experience, I used tothink such symbolism might be unnecessary in the modern world. Aren’t we all soconnected now, with phones and wirelessinternet access? Why would we need asymbolic flame carried around the world?I could not have been more wrong.TED Fellows - TEDGlobal 201117

Often workingcollaboratively, she experimentswith transforming complexprocesses and datasets intosound compositions, objects, and animations. For the past15 years, Julie has focused onquestioning the use of electronic technologies to “translatenature.” Her pioneering artworkThe Lake tracked electronically tagged fish and translatedtheir movement into a real-timeaudio-visual experience. Basedin the UK, Julie is currentlyartist-in-residence at CranfieldUniversity’s Microsystems andNanotechnology Centre.Q&AWhat are you currently working on?My current work explores how we canengage with networking activity in aphysical and immediate way. It will involvethe creation of many small kinetic objectsthat will (hopefully) exhibit emergent connected behavior visually and sonically. Theproject will look at social networking datapatterns to see what makes certain datamore contagious than other data.
