INTRODUCTIONWelcome to Tennessee DECA! I hope you find that participating in DECA is one of the most rewardingexperiences in your professional career. You are joining hundreds of other advisors in Tennessee andthousands of advisors across the globe that supports their classroom instruction through DECA. DECAoffers phenomenal learning programs, including competitive events, which tie directly to nationalcurriculum standards and reinforce 21st Century Skills.DECA is designed to be run by students for their own growth and benefit. Through chapter meetings,competitions, leadership conference, and activities, students will be building academic andemployability skills that will help them get a job and have a successful career. Among the mostimportant things to remember are to help your students to learn an effective planning process forcarrying out activities, and to let students take the lead on planning and execution of events. Activitiesshould be student-driven with support and help from the adviser. The students will learn and grow asthey carry out the local chapter calendar of events. Just remember, everything does not have to beperfect to be an engaging learning opportunity for students. DECA is not meant to produce extra workor burdens for the advisor; instead, it is a means to provide an avenue to increase awareness for yourprogram of study, to showcase your local school, to help teachers meet educational standards, and toprovide amazing, life-changing opportunities for students.In this document, you will find links multiple files that will give you information about Tennessee DECAactivities for the 2014-15 school year and how to set up a new chapter. Please give special attention tothe 2014-15 Tennessee DECA Advisor Guide, as it contains a wealth of information and will help youanswer questions that may pop up throughout the year. I am here for you as well, but the advisorguide is a great resource to familiarize yourself with.National DECA has a phenomenal new advisor program. I encourage you to reach out Sandra Tucker,Sandra Tucker@deca.org. She is the go-to person for new advisors from DECA, Inc., the nationalorganization. Sandra will be there to help set up your chapter and register members from the nationaloffice. Tennessee DECA’s membership system is through the national office, so Sandra will be a greatresource for you. Linked below is a PDF document that outlines the steps to starting a new chapter.Additional links to the various websites and publications are available through this one-pagedocument.Finally, if you have not already, investigate the DECA, Inc. and Tennessee DECA websites,www.deca.org and www.decatn.org, respectively. I also send out a monthly newsletter during the first full week of each month as well asspecial event newsletters for district and state conferences. All newsletters are cataloged on thewebsite.
