Hello efficiencyand vastly improved stiffness to weight ratio. Our XC focused F-Seriesforks now have a remote lockout version available for quick and flawlesson-the-fly transitions. All FOX damping systems have again been improvedto provide Velcro traction in corners and seamless transitions betweencompression and rebound. TALAS is brought up to version three withimproved air spring curves and an improved actuation mechanism whilethe DHX Air ProPedal lever system is completely redesigned for betterergonomics and ease of use on the fly.In 2007 we took FOX on the road. BOB FOXFOXPHILOSOPHY2007 was a monumental year for the development and race program at FOX. We tested with riders,listened, tested, listened, over and over again. Yes, it gets tiring, heated, frustrating and sometimesdown right overwhelming yet in the end, rewarding. The outcome of this team effort has beenanother year of successful racing and a fantastic 2009 product line.When we work with our athletes they ask us, “What if I took that line through the rocks, whereno one else has gone, I could shave seconds off my time.” When we listen to our athletes we askourselves, “What if we set up their suspension for the new section and they do shave a secondor two off of their time? What if we work together on the entire course to get the most out oftheir bike and suspension? How much time can we win by then?” When we start asking ourselves,“What if,” the possibilities become endless.If we don’t say “What if,” and act on it, someone else surely will. With every race season that comesto an end, we look back and ask ourselves, what did we learn? However, the100mm width means 10mm lessaxle length so the 15 X 100 systemis lighter than the 20 X 110 system.FOX and Shimano calculated thisto be a 5g savings.Our thoughts on hub weiGhts:An optimized hub for a 15mm axle will be lighter than an optimized hub for a 20mm axle. The bearingsare smaller for the 15mm axle, so the hub shell can besmaller for the 15mm axle. FOX and Shimano calculatedthis to be a 55g savings.32CHassIscrownsnew lighter 140mm web-brace lowerFor 2009 we redesigned and optimized all 32mm crowns: F80-100,F120, F29 and the new 140 Crown forboth the standard 1 1/8 steerer and thenew 1.5 tapered steerer.this form-fit lower leg wraps around the seal flanges for alighter casting. revised internal machining process results inlower friction throughout the stroke.the new forging yields a lighter andstronger overall fork.Our thoughts on drOpOut desiGn:The dropout material supporting the axle on the lowerleg is of a smaller diameter for a 15mm axle than it is fora 20mm axle. FOX calculated this to be an 11g savings.110 MMweiGht cOnclusiOn: FOX and Shimano calculatedthe 15X100 axle system weight to be a 5g 55g 11g 71g savings as compared to a 20x110 axle system weight.stiffness/strengthOur thoughts on wheel stiFFness/strenGth:Disc brake spacing, mounting geometry, and alignment are a locked standard that must be complied with. Current disc brakerotor spacing is defined from the center plane of the wheel, not from the dropout face. Therefore, 110mm spacing doesn’t doanything for wheel strength or stiffness. The non disc side flange of the wheel hub is optimized to be as close to the non discside of the fork leg already whether the dropout spacing is 100mm, or 110mm. The disc side wheel hub flange has to provideclearance to the brake rotor, which is frozen in its placement, regardless of dropout spacing dimensions, due to current discbrake rotor placement dimensions and standards. Therefore, due to the use of disc brakes and the need to place brake rotorswhere they are expected to be, dropout spacing does not translate to wider wheel hub flange spacing. Making the entire forkwider (and registering the disc brake rotor placement off of the face of the dropout which would require a new disc brakemounting standard), not just the dropout spacing, would allow for a potentially stronger wheel. But this would make the overallfork much heavier due to the wider crown and fork brace. Since DH wheels have the same hub flange spacing as a 15X100 hub,and since DH wheels are deemed plenty strong already, we chose to maintain our overall fork width to our current spacing, takeadvantage of the weight savings listed above, and do all this with no theoretical wheel strength difference between a 15X100 VSa 20X110.Our thoughts on aXle stiFFness:A properly designed thru axle system is going to providebetter torsional and transverse shear performance than an opendropout axle system. FOX and Shimano chose the 15X100 as theappropriate blend of weight, stiffness and packaging for the XC,Trail, and light duty All Mountain applications. Axle diameter playsa big theoretical role in predicting system stiffness. In practicehowever, since there is little to no unsupported axle in any bicyclethru axle system, the axles themselves end up more in shear and intension, where cross sectional area and closure method notdiameter are the key design parameters.15percentInCrease In torsIonaL stIFFnesscrown steerernew designs are optimized to producegreatest strength to weight ratio.
