Operating Instructions for Non-Electric Pressure Steam SterilizersIMPORTANT: DO NOT OPERAT E T HIS PRE S S URE S T E AMST ERILIZE R UNT IL YOU HAVE T HOROUGHLY RE AD T HE S EOPERATING INS TRUCT IONS .CLEANINGWhen you are done using your sterilizer, youneed to empty the water from the unit, rinsethoroughly and dry completely. This procedureneeds to be done daily. Do not leave water inthe unit overnight. Rinse thoroughly betweenwater changes. Store your sterilizer in a dryarea. On your next use, fill the sterilizer withclean distilled water. Distilled water is therecommended water. If distilled water is notavailable, then you may use your local water. Ifyour local water supply contains lime or highlevels of minerals, the unit will require periodiccleaning to remove and prevent the buildup ofdeposits.Units should be cleaned whenever there is abuildup of lime or mineral deposits. After manycycles, a white deposit may begin to form onthe bottom of the sterilizer. We recommendcleaning with a lime remover. Manufacturers ofcoffee makers have cleaning solutions whichmay be used. There are also solutions availableat your local hardware and drug stores that canbe used to clean aluminum. Follow themanufacturer's instructions and make up asolution of the cleaner, filling your sterilizerabove the standard operating level. Let thesterilizer stand a few minutes then rinsethoroughly. You may have to repeat thisprocedure a few times to fully remove the limeand mineral deposits from your sterilizer.Overpressure Plug#1010Geared Steam Gauge# 72SExcess Pressure Relief Valve#2050KControl Valve#65KIndex Alignment ArrowAir Exhaust Tube#2155-15 (1915X)#2155-25 (1925X)#2155-41 (1941X)You may also use standard white vinegar toclean your sterilizer. OPERATION1. Remove the cover of the sterilizer by turningthe wing nuts in a counter-clockwise motion.Always undo two opposite wing nuts at a time.Turn cover and remove cover from bottom.Next remove inner container and inner containerrack from sterilizer bottom (See Fig. A).2. LUBRICATE METAL-TO-METAL SEAL.Apply lubrication to the entire beveled edge ofthe bottom (See Fig. 1). We recommend usinga high temperature lubricant like high vacuumMetal-to-metal sealApply lubricant hereFig. 1grease; petroleum jelly may also be used as asubstitute. Only a thin film of lubrication isneeded to lubricate the metal-to-metal seal.3. Place distilled or deionized water up to thewater line machined into the sterilizer bottom.Next, place the inner container rack inside theinner container with the lip side down (See Fig.A). The purpose of the inner container rack isto provide an air space at the bottom of theinner container so that air may be evacuatedand steam is allowed to circulate freelythroughout the entire chamber.4. With the inner container and inner containerrack out of the sterilizer place articles to besterilized inside the inner container on top ofthe inner container rack. You may wish toplace the articles to be sterilized inside plasticbags specifically designed for use inside steamsterilizers. Arrange items so that steam maycirculate freely inside the chamber during thesterilization cycle. Also, you can place a towelor cloth on top of the items inside the containerto absorb any moisture that may drip downfrom the cover onto the items.5. Check to see if your water level inside thesterilizer is correct and then place loaded innercontainer inside the sterilizer.Lever verticalor openLever horizontalor closeddeflector6. VERY IMPORTANT – make sure that the airexhaust channel (located on the inside of theinner container) is positioned on the right sideof the sterilizer. This is necessary so that whenthe cover is placed on the unit you can guidethe air exhaust tube into the air exhaust tubechannel (See Fig. B).7. Place the cover of the sterilizer making surethat that index alignment arrow on the coveraligns with the index line arrow on the side ofthe bottom; AND that the air exhaust tube isinserted into the air exhaust tube channel onthe inner container. With cover aligned with thebottom and the air exhaust tube inside the airexhaust channel you may now tighten the wingnuts on the cover. Be sure to tighten wingnuts evenly, always tightening down twoopposite wing nuts at one time. As you aretightening the wing nuts be sure to maintain aneven gap between the cover and the bottom.Loosen or tighten the wing nuts to maintain aneven gap. This will draw the cover down evenlyand ensure a proper seal. NEVER USE AWRENCH OR ANY MECHANICAL DEVICE TOTIGHTEN WING NUTS. NEVER HAMMER ORSTRIKE THE WING NUTS OR COVER WHILEOPENING OR CLOSING UNIT.8. Place unit on heat source. If the water youhave placed in the unit is cold, it will requireapproximately 35 minutes to bring the unit upto temperature.9. OPEN CONTROL VALVE (See Fig. 2) bymoving the lever into the upright position.Steam generated by the sterilizer will be drawnfrom the bottom of the unit up through the airexhaust tube and out the control valve. STEAMMUST CONTINUOUSLY ESCAPE FROM THECONTROL VALVE FOR AT LEAST 5 MINUTES.Once this has occurred, CLOSE THE VALVEAND LET PRESSURE BUILD UNTIL THEGAUGE READS IN THE “GREEN” STERILI4valve bodysteam escapeholessteam escapeholesdeflectorOpen control valveClosed control valveFig. 2Fig. 3ZATION ZONE, which is between 17 to 21 PSIor 121 C/250 F to 127 C/259 F. Once youhave completed the above, OPEN THECONTROL VALVE A SECOND TIME ANDVENT THE CHAMBER FOR AN ADDITIONAL 3TO 5 MINUTES. Please Note that the greatestreason for a sterilization failure is trapped air inthe chamber of the sterilizer. Trapped air mayprevent the steam from permeating thecontents to be sterilized.10. Once the chamber is properly vented thesterilization cycle may begin. Start timing thesterilization cycle when the gauge needle is inthe green sterilization zone on the face of thegauge between 17-21 PSI. When the gaugeneedle is in the green sterilization zone begintiming your sterilization cycle. Be sure toregulate your heat source to maintain thegauge needle in the sterilization zone. Werecommend running a sterilization cycle of notless than 35 minutes at a temperature of noless than 121 C/250 F. ALWAYS MONITORTHE GAUGE DURING THE CYCLE MAKINGSURE THAT THE PRESSURE REMAINS IN THEGREEN STERILIZATION ZONE ON THE FACEOF THE GAUGE. We highly recommend thatyou use steam integrator strips in your sterilizerto ensure a successful sterilization cycle.11. At the end of the sterilization cycle turn offyour heat source and put the control valve intothe open position (See Fig. 2) to allow thesteam to escape. The valve will be hot afterthe cycle, to avoid injury always use heatresistant gloves to open the valve. Continuemonitoring the gauge until it reaches 0 PSI and

no sound of escaping steam is coming throughthe control valve. NEVER ATTEMPT TO OPENTHE STERILIZER UNTIL THE GAUGE READSZERO.12. With the pressure gauge reading 0 PSIloosen the wing nuts evenly by turning twoopposite wing nuts counter clockwise. Thewing nuts may still be hot. We recommendwearing heat resistant gloves to avoid potentialburns. With the wing nuts removed, removethe cover by turning it counter clockwise.Remember when removing the cover always tiltand angle the cover away from yourself orother people to prevent injury from anyremaining steam in the chamber. PLEASENOTE, when the sterilizer is allowed to coolwith the cover tightened to the bottom thisincreases the chance that the cover maybecome stuck to the bottom.13. With the cover removed the inner containermay now be removed. In the event that theinner container remains hot, we recommendusing heat resistant gloves to handle the innercontainer. If the sterilizer is not going to beimmediately used again, before storing the unitall water should be emptied from the unit andthe inside be thoroughly dried. Werecommend pouring the water out of the unitwhile it is still warm and leaving the cover off tolet the inside of the chamber dry. The residualheat will help dry the unit. For storage, placethe cover on the unit and loosely attach thewing nuts. We recommend leaving the controlvalve open (See Fig. 2) to allow air to circulatethrough your sterilizer.14. We have included a sterilization log sheetthat we highly recommend using as bestpractice. The sheet will allow the operator tokeep a record of all of the sterilization cycles. The operator should diligently fill out and keepthe record safe. Additional sheets can bedownloaded for free at our website.MAINTENANCE1. Metal-to-Metal seal (See Fig. 1). Werecommend periodically checking the metalto-metal seal and lubricating as needed. It isextremely important to keep the seal lubricatedas failure to do so could cause the cover tostick potentially making it very difficult toremove the cover.water after soaking in vinegar. In the event that you are unable toproperly remove any foreign material from yourLever verticalor openLever horizontalor closeddeflectorvalve bodysteam escapeholessteam escapeholesdeflectorMetal-to-metal sealApply lubricant hereFig. 12. PRESSURE GAUGE, PART NO. 72S. (SeeFig. 4) Do not immerse your pressure gauge inwater when cleaning the unit. The gauge doesnot require any maintenance other thanperiodically making sure that the opening of thegauge on the underside of the cover is openand free of any foreign matter. DO NOT USEYOUR UNIT IF THE GAUGE FACE CRACKS,FILLS WITH STEAM OR DOES NOT RETURNTO ZERO.Fig. 4Pressure Gauge3. CONTROL VALVE, PART NO. 65K (See Fig.2 & 3). To ensure long life and properoperation it is important to periodically cleanthe control valve thoroughly in hot soapy water. If distilled water is not used, calcification couldbuild up and cause the valve to leak. To cleanany built up calcification, put the lever in theopen position and soak the valve in vinegar. Besure to clean the control valve in hot soapy5Open control valveClosed control valveFig. 2Fig. 3control valve, we recommend that the controlvalve be discarded and replaced with a newcontrol valve.4. AIR EXHAUST TUBE, PART NO. 2155 (SeeFig. 5). It is essential that the air exhaust tubebe frequently checked to make sure that airpasses freely through it. We recommend thatFig. 5you blow air through the exhaust tube at leastonce a month to make certain that it is notplugged with any foreign material. Simplyremove the air exhaust tube from the controlvalve on the bottom of the sterilizer cover. Thetube may be cleaned by using a small diameterwire running through the length of the tubeseveral times. If you notice any difficultycleaning the air exhaust tube or notice anycorrosion on the inside of the passage, werecommend that you discard the tube andreplace it with a new one.5. EXCESS PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE, PARTNO. 2050K (See Fig. 6). Your sterilizer isequipped with a new type of excess pressurerelief valve. It is designed for longer, maintenance free service; however, we recommendthat the valve be replaced every three years innormal service. The valve is designed to

release pressure at 28 PSI. This valve isequipped with a deflector cap that will directany steam released in a downward direction.pushing the round top side into the openingfrom the underside of the cover (See Fig. 7).6. OVERPRESSURE PLUG, PART NO. 1010(See Fig. 7). Your sterilizer is also equippedwith anoverpressureDeflector Capplug whichacts as anadditionalsafety device. The plug isdesigned toautomaticallyreleaseFig. 6pressurePart No. 2050KshouldExcess PressurepressureRelief Valvereach greaterthan 30 PSI. The plug is made from siliconeand is found on the cover located directly infront of the Excess Pressure Relief Valve. Forbest performance of the plug and safeoperating of your sterilizer, we recommend thatyou replace your plug every six months. Theoverpressure plug and opening should bechecked at least once per month. Theoverpressure plug may be removed using yourfingers (NEVER REMOVE THE PLUG WHENTHE STERILIZER IS HOT). Once the plug isremoved it is important to clean the opening inthe cover where the plug goes to keep it clearof any foreign matter, residue or grease buildupPart No. 1010Overpressure PlugTop of Plug is roundedTop LipUnder side of plug isindentedCover top sideFig. 7that may occur. IMPORTANT STERILIZATION FACTSSteam is an ideal sterilizingagent because it killsmicrobes quickly. A largevolume of steam condensesto a very small amount ofwater d more steam is drawnto replace it. This causesexcellent penetration offabrics, papers and certainplastics. It is essential that this and anysteam sterilizer be regularlychecked for proper steampenetration throughout theentire chamber of thesterilizer. We recommendusing steam sterilizationindicator strips that may bepurchased at many medicalsupply retailers. Place theindicator strip in every load toensure that adequate steampenetration is present in theload thereby assuring asuccessful sterilization cycle.A melt indicator in a smallglass vial is anotheracceptable way to determinetemperature and steampenetration during the cycle. For more information onsteam sterilization werecommend going to theCenter for Disease Controlhttp://www.cdc.gov/.PRESSURE GAUGEACCURACY: The gauges arerated as having an accuracyof 3%-2%-3%. This designates plus or minus 3% of thefull span for the first and lastquarter of the dial and 2% forthe middle of the dial.TROUBLESHOOTINGQuestion: I am havingtrouble passing a spore test, what am I doing wrong?Answer: Most likely you arenot properly venting all the airout of the chamber before youstart timing your cycle. Alwaysvent the chamber using thePart 65 Control Valve asoutlined in No. 10 of theoperating instructions.7
