Students will be able to identify and describe art fromprehistoric times to modern time. Throughout this course, students will discuss various artworks, researchartists, and create documents and presentations demonstrating concepts learned.The following are Enduring Understandings of this course: Viewing and creating works of art involves a deliberate process of making decisions and judgments. Art and architecture were influenced by emerging cultures and significant, and lasting artisticcontributions have been made by the major civilizations. The rise of Christianity influenced art and artists in the period between the Roman Empire and theRenaissance. Significant changes in art techniques and purpose emerge during the Renaissance, Baroque andRococo periods. Although art during the modern era is diverse and different from most earlier styles, modern artistsare still influenced by art from the past.ART IN WORLD CULTURE (.5 credit)Grades: 9-12Who is the greatest artist of all time? Is it Leonardo daVinci? Claude Monet? Michelangelo? Pablo Picasso? Isthe greatest artist of all time someone whose name has been lost to history? You will learn about some ofthe greatest artists while also creating art of your own, including digital art. We will explore the basicprinciples and elements of art, learn how to critique art, and examine some of the traditional art of theAmericas, Africa, and Oceania in addition to the development of Western art.DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY (.5 credit)Grades: 9-12Have you ever wondered how photographers take such great pictures? Have you tried to take photographsand wondered why they didn’t seem to capture that moment that you saw with your eyes? The DigitalPhotography I course focuses on the basics of photography, including building an understanding ofaperture, shutter speed, lighting, and composition. Students will be introduced to the history ofphotography and basic camera functions. Students will use the basic techniques of composition and camerafunctions to build a portfolio of images, capturing people, landscapes, close-up, and action photographs.Required Materials: digital camera of 2 megapixels or more with a minimum 3x zoom lens. Digital zooms arepermitted but not recommended. Download free Gimp software. Various props for staging photographs.Student must have access to a computer in order to download the photo editing software.Page 2

Skills in musical dictation and listening, sightsinging, and basic keyboard harmony are an important part of the AP theory course.AP Exam: Exam fees are to be paid by the student or by school district. The individual school district orders theexam on behalf of the student and administers it.Prerequisite: Students should have a minimum of three years of past musical study, (piano, instrumental, vocalor composition) and an ability to identify note names, perform basic rhythmic figures and identify keys.MUSIC APPRECIATION (.5 credit)Grades: 9-12Have you ever heard a piece of music that made you want to get up and dance? Cry your heart out? Sing atthe top of your lungs? Whether pop, classical, or anything in between, music provides a powerful way forpeople to celebrate their humanity and connect with something larger than themselves. Music Appreciation:The Enjoyment of Listening not only will provide a historical perspective on music from the Middle Ages tothe 21st century, but it will also teach you the essentials of how to listen and really hear (with aknowledgeable ear) the different music that’s all around you. Learning how to truly appreciate sound andmelody is the best way to ensure a continued love of this delightful art form.BUSINESSACCOUNTING (1 credit)Grades: 10-12Course curriculum is designed to provide students a strong foundation in accounting principles. Students willlearn what business transactions are and how accountants use a double-entry system (debits and credits) tokeep track of these transactions. Next students will study the complete accounting cycle of recordingtransactions, preparing financial statements, and “closing the books” for small, single-owner service andmerchandising businesses. This course prepares students for post-secondary accounting courses.Required Materials: Excel software is required; Google Sheets is prohibited.ADVERTISING & SALES PROMOTIONS (.5 credit)Grades: 9-12What comes to mind when you think of “marketing”? Perhaps a familiar television jingle plays in your head?Or maybe you think of those irritating sales phone calls? There’s no denying the sheer magnitude and powerof the marketing industry. Every year companies spend approximately 200 billion promoting their productsand services – and that’s just in the United States alone! You may be familiar with being on the receiving endmarketing, but what’s it like on the other side? In Advertising and Sales Promotions, you’ll see how thesemarketing campaigns, ads, and commercials are brought to life and meet some of the creative folks whoproduce them. They examine how the court systems work together, and what misconduct results in going tocourt. It is important to also understand your consumer rights. As they progress through the course, theywill also gain an understanding from a business perspective what is right and wrong business actions andemployment laws. As an employee or employer it is important to understand the laws that protect theemployee and employer. The study will focus on the formation of a business and the basic legal issuesassociated with each type of business.COLLEGE & CAREER READINESS (.5 credit)Grades: 10-12Do you ever wonder what you will do after high school? This course will show you the educational and careeropportunities available to you. You will learn how to get accepted and pay for college, how to find a job, andhow to plan for a successful future.Throughout the course, you will be coached by Mawi Asgedom, a Harvard graduate who was the first in hisfamily to attend college, and is now a student leadership expert who has trained over 1,000,000 students.Page 4

This course explains the ins and outs of such an enterprise, giving you the confidence needed tobe your very own boss. If you’veever dreamed of being a true entrepreneur but feel daunted by the prospect, this is your chance to learn allyou need to know.FASHION & INTERIOR DESIGN (1 credit)Grades: 9-12In this course, you’ll explore what it is like to work in the industry by exploring career possibilities and thebackground that you need to pursue them. Get ready to try your hand at designing as you learn the basics ofcolor and design then test your skills through hands-on projects.Requirement: Students must have access to a working sewing machine as they will use it to create an item. In Part A of Hospitality and Tourism 2:Hotel and Restaurant Management, you will learn about what makes the hotel and restaurant industriesunique. Learn about large and small restaurants, boutique and resort hotels, and their day-to-dayoperations. Evaluate the environment for these businesses by examining their customers and theircompetition. As well, you will discover trends and technological advances that makes each industry excitingand innovative. In Part A, you can explore a variety of interesting job options from Front Desk and Conciergeservices to Maître’d and food service.HOSPITALITY & TOURISM: HOTEL & RESTAURANT MANAGEMENT 2B (.5 credit)Grades: 9-12Building upon the prior prerequisite course, students will embark on their journey to becoming managers inthe hotel and restaurant industry by gaining knowledge and developing a variety of skills. Students will learnof different management styles, laws, and regulations that govern hotels and restaurants as well as how todevelop job descriptions and business plans. HTML5 and CSS3 will be the standard versions used inthe class. Students will understand design components of websites, including the use of color, layout andwhen to use different techniques, typography rules, and the importance of imagery. At the conclusion of thecourse, students will present a website to the class. AP Computer Science A also emphasizes the design issues that make programsunderstandable, adaptable, and when appropriate, reusable. At the same time, the development of usefulcomputer programs and classes is used as a context for introducing other important concepts in computerscience, including the development and analysis of algorithms, the development and use of fundamentaldata structures, and the study of standard algorithms and typical applications.
