Chapter 1: Mental ChemistryChemistry is the science which treats of theintra-atomic or the intra-molecular changeswhich material things undergo undervarious influences.Mental is defined as “of or appertaining tothe mind, including intellect, feeling, andwill, or the entire rational nature.”Science is knowledge gained and verifiedby exact observation and correct thinking.Mental chemistry is, therefore, the sciencewhich treats of the changes which materialconditions undergo through the operationsof the mind, verified by exact observationand correct thinking.As the transformations which are broughtabout in applied chemistry are the result of

the orderly combination of materials, itfollows that mental chemistry brings aboutresults in a like manner.Any conceivable number may be formedwith the Arabic numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7,8, 9, 0.Anyconceivablethoughtmaybeexpressed with the 26 letters of thealphabet.Any conceivable thing can be organizedwith the 14 elements and always and onlyby the proper grouping of electrons intomolecules.When two or more molecules are groupeda new individuality is created, and thisindividuality which has been called intobeing possesses characteristics which are

not possessed by either of the elementswhich gave it being.Thus, one atom of sodium and one ofchlorine give us salt, and this combinationalone can give us salt, and no othercombination of elements can give us salt,and salt is something very different fromeither of the elements of which it iscomposed.What is true in the inorganic world islikewise true in the organic - certainconscious processes will produce certaineffects, and the result will invariably be thesame. The same thought will always befollowed by the same consequence, and noother thought will serve the purpose.This must necessarily be true because theprinciple must exist independently of the

organs through which they function. Lightmust exist - otherwise there could be noeye. Sound must exist - otherwise therecould be no ear. Mind must exist otherwise there could be no brain.Mental action is therefore the interaction ofthe individual upon the Universal Mind, andas the Universal Mind is the intelligencewhich pervades all space and animates allliving things, this mental action andreaction is the law of causation.It is the Universal Chemist, but the principleof causation does not obtain in theindividual mind but in the Universal Mind. Itis not an objective faculty but a subjectiveprocess.The individual may, however, bring thepower into manifestation and as the

possible combinations of thought areinfinite, the results are seen in an infinitevariety of conditions and g in gloomy caverns, gnawingbones, was born, lived, and died in a hostileworld. His hostility and his wretchednessarosefromhisignorance.Hishandmaidens were Hate and Fear.His sole reliance was his club. He saw inthe beasts, forests, torrents, seas, clouds,and even in his fellow man, only enemies.He recognized no ties binding them one toanother or to himself.Modern man is born to comparative luxury.Love rocks his cradle and shields his youth.When he goes forth to struggle he wields apencil, not a club. He relies upon his brain,

now his brawn. He knows the physical asneither master nor equal, but as a usefulservant. His fellow men and the forces ofNature are his friends - not his enemies.These tremendous changes, from hate tolove, from fear to confidence, from materialstrife to mental control, have been wroughtby the slow dawn of Understanding. IndirectproportionasheunderstandsCosmic Law is man’s lot enviable or thereverse.Thoughtbuildsorganicstructuresinanimals and men. The protoplasmic celldesires the light and sends forth itsimpulse; this impulse gradually builds aneye. A species of deer feed in a countrywhere the leaves grow on high branches,and the constant reaching for their favorite

food builds cell by cell the neck of thegiraffe. The amphibian reptiles desire to flyin the open air above the water; theydevelop wings and become birds.Experiments with parasites found on plantsindicate that even the lowest order of lifemakes use of mental chemistry. JacquesLoeb, M. D., Ph. D., a member of theRockefeller Institute made the followingexperiment: “In order to obtain the material,potted rose bushes are brought into a roomand placed in front of a closed window. Ifthe plants are allowed to dry out, theaphides (parasites), previously wingless,change to winged insects. After themetamorphosis, the insects leave theplants, fly to the window and then creepupward on the glass.”

It is evident that these tiny insects foundthat the plants on which they had beenthriving were dead, and that they couldtherefore secure nothing more to eat anddrink from this source. The only method bywhich they could save themselves fromstarvation was to grow temporary wingsand fly, which they did.That the brain cells are directly affected bymental pictures, and that the brain cells intheir turn can affect the entire being, wasproven by Prof. Elmer Gates of theSmithsonian Institution at Washington.Guinea pigs were kept in enclosures withcertain colors dominant; dissection showedtheir brains to be larger in the color areathan those of the same class of guinea pigskept in other enclosures. The perspirationof men in various mental moods was

analyzed,andtheresultantsaltsexperimented with. Those of a man in anangry state were of an unusual color; asmall portion put on the tongue of a dogproduced evidences of poisoning.Experiments at Harvard College withstudents on the weighing board proved thatthe mind moves the blood. When thestudent was told to imagine that he wasrunning a foot race, the board sank downat the foot, and when a problem inmathematicswasbeingworkedthebalanced board sank down at the head.This shows that thought not only flashesconstantly between mind and mind, with anintensity and swiftness far transcendingelectricity, but that it also builds thestructures through which it operates.

Through the conscious mind we knowourselvesasindividuals,andtakecognizance of the world about us. Thesubconscious mind is the storehouse ofpast thoughts.We can understand the action of theconscious and subconscious minds byobserving the process by which the childlearns to play the piano. He is taught howto hold his hands and strike the keys, but atfirst he finds it somewhat difficult to controlthe movement of his fingers. He mustpracticedaily,mustconcentratehisthoughts upon his fingers, consciouslymakingtherightmovements.Thesethoughts, in time, become subconscious,and the fingers are directed and controlledin the playing by the subconsciousness. Inhis first months, and possibly first years of

practice, the pupil can perform only bykeeping his conscious mind centered uponthe work; but later he can play with easeand at the same time carry on aconversationwiththoseabouthim,because the subconscious has become sothoroughly imbued with the idea of rightmovements that it can direct them withoutdemanding the attention of the ve. It carried out only what issuggested by the conscious mind. Butthese suggestions it carries out faithfully,and it is this close relation between theconscious and subconscious which makesthe conscious thinking so important.

Man’s organism is controlled by thesubconsciousthought;circulation,breathing, digestion, and assimilation areallactivitiescontrolledbythesubconscious.The subconscious is continually getting itsimpulses from the conscious, and we haveonly to change our conscious thought to getacorrespondingchangeinthesubconscious.We live in a fathomless sea of plastic mindsubstance. This substance is ever aliveand active. It is sensitive to the highestdegree. It takes form according to themental demand. Thought forms the mold ormatrixfromwhichthesubstanceexpresses. Our ideal is the mold fromwhich our future will emerge.

The Universe is alive. In order to expresslife there must be mind; nothing can existwithout mind. Everything which exists issome manifestation of this one basicsubstance from which and by which allthingshavebeencreatedandarecontinually being recreated. It is man’scapacity to think that makes him a creatorinstead of a creature.All things are the result of the thoughtprocess.Man hasaccomplished theseemingly impossible because he hasrefused to consider it impossible. Byconcentrationmenhavemadetheconnection between the finite and theInfinite, the limited and the Unlimited, thevisible and the Invisible, the personal andthe Impersonal.

Greatmusicianshavesucceededinthrilling the world by the creation of divinerhapsodies. Great inventors have made theconnection and startled the world by theirwonderful creations. Great authors, greatphilosophers,greatscientistshavesecured this harmony to such an extentthat though their writings were createdhundreds of years ago, we are justbeginning to realize their truth. Love ofmusic, love of business, love of creationcaused these people to concentrate, andthe ways and means of materializing theirideals slowly but surely developed.Throughout the entire Universe the law ofcause and effect is ever at work.This law is supreme; here a cause, thereaneffect.Theycanneveroperate

independently. One is supplementary tothe other. Nature at all times is endeavoringto establish a perfect equilibrium. This isthe law of the Universe and is ever active.Universal harmony is the goal for which allnature strives. The entire cosmos movesunder this law. The sun, the moon, thestarts are all held in their respectivepositions because of harmony. They traveltheir orbits, they appear at certain times incertain places,andbecauseof theprecision of this law, astronomers are ableto tell us where various stars will appear ina thousand years. The scientist bases hisentire hypothesis on this law of cause andeffect. nowhere is it held in dispute exceptin the domain of man. Here we find peoplespeaking of luck, chance, accident, andmishap; but is any one of these possible?

Is the Universe a unit? If so, and there islaw and order in one part, it must extendthroughout all parts. This is a scientificdeduction.Like begets like on every plane ofexistence, and while people believe thismore or less vaguely, they refuse to give itanyconsiderationwheretheyareconcerned. This is due to the fact thatheretofore man could never realize how heset certain causes in motion which relatedhim with his various experiences.It is only in the past few years that aworking hypothesis could be formulated toapply this law to man - the goal of theUniverse is harmony. This means a perfectbalance between all things.

Ether fills all interplanetary space. Thismore or less metaphysical substance is theelementary basis of all matter. it is uponthis substance that the messages of thewireless are transmitted through space.Thought dropped into this substancecauses vibrations which in turn unite withsimilar vibrations and react upon thethinker. All manifestations are the result ofthought - but the thinking is on differentplanes.We have one plane of thought constitutingthe animal plane. Here are actions andinteractions which animals respond to, yetmen know nothing of. Then we have theconscious thought plane. Here are almostlimitless planes of thought to which manmay be responsive. It is strictly the nature

of our thinking that determines to whichplane we shall respond. On this plane, wehave the thoughts of the ignorant, the wise,the poor, the wealthy, the sick, the healthy,the very poor, the very rich, and so on. Thenumber of thought planes is infinite, but thepoint is that when we think on a definiteplane, we are responsive to thoughts onthat plane, and the effect of the reaction isapparent in our environment.Take for example one who is thinking onthe thought plane of wealth. He is inspiredwith an idea, and the result is success. Itcould not be otherwise. He is thinking onthe success plane, and as like attracts like,his thoughts attract other similar thoughts,all of which contribute to his success. Hisreceiver is attuned for success thoughtsonly, all other messages fail to reach his

consciousness, hence, he knows nothingof them; his antennae, as it were, reach intothe Universal Ether and connect with theideas by which his plans and ambitionsmay be realized.Sit right where you are, place an amplifierto your ear, and you may hear the mostbeautiful music, or a lecture, or the latestmarket reports. What does this indicate, inaddition to the pleasure derived from hemusic or the information received from thelecture or market reports?It indicates first that there must be somesubstance sufficiently refined to carry thesevibrations to every part of the world. Again,it indicates that this substance must besufficiently refined to penetrate every othersubstance known to man. The vibrations

must penetrate wood, brick, stone or steelof any kind.They must go over, through and underrivers, mountains, above the earth, underthe earth, everywhere and anywhere.Again it indicates that time and space havebeen annihilated. The instant a piece ofmusic is broadcasted in Pittsburgh oranywhere else, by putting the propermechanism to your ear you can get it asclearly and distinctly as though you were inthe same room. This indicates that thesevibrations proceed in every direction;wherever there is an ear to hear, it mayhear.If then there is a substance so refined thatit will take up the human voice, and send itin every direction so that every human

being who is equipped with the propermechanism may receive the message, is itnot possible that the same substance willcarry a thought just as readily and just ascertainly? Most assuredly. How do weknow this? By experimentation. This is theonly way to be certain of anything. Try it.Make the experiment yourself.Sit right where you are. Select a subjectwith which you are fairly familiar. Begin tothink. The thoughts will follow each other inrapid succession. One thought will suggestanother. You will soon be surprised atsome of the thoughts which have made youa channel of their manifestation. You didnot know that you knew so much about thesubject. You did not know that you couldput them into such beautiful language. Youmarvel at the ease and rapidity with which

the thoughts arrive. Where do they comefrom? From the One Source of all wisdom,all power. and all understanding. You havebeen to the source of all knowledge, forevery thought which has ever been thoughtis still in existence, ready and waiting forsomeone to attach the mechanism bywhich it can find expression. You cantherefore think the thoughts of every sage,every artist, every financier, every captainof industry who ever existed, for thoughtsnever die.Suppose your experiment is not entirelysuccessful; try again. Few of us are proudof our first effort at anything. We did noteven make a very great success in trying towalk the first time we tried. If you try again,remember that the brain is the organ of theobjective mind, that it is related to the

objective world by the cerebro-spinal orvoluntary nervous system; that this systemof nerves is connected with the objectiveworld by certain mechanism or senses.These are the organs with which we see,hear, feel, taste, and smell. Now, a thoughtis a thing which can neither be seen, norheard; we cannot taste it, nor can we smellit, nor can we feel it. Evidently the fivesenses can be of no possible value in tryingto receive a thought. They must thereforebe stilled, because thought is a spiritualactivity and cannot reach us through anymaterial channel. We will then relax bothmentally and physically and send out an S.O. S. for help and await the result. Thesuccess of our experiment will then dependentirelyupon ourreceptive.abilitytobecome

Scientists like to make use of the wordEther in speaking of the substance “Inwhich we live and move and have ourbehaving,” which is Omnipresent, whichimpenetrates everything, and which is thesource of all activity. They like to use thewordEtherbecauseEtherimpliessomething which can be measured and sofar as the materialistic school of scientistsis concerned, anything which cannot bemeasured does not exist; but who canmeasure an electron? And yet the electronis the basis for all material existence, so faras we know at present.It would require 500,000,000 atoms placedside by side to measure one linear inch. Anumber of atoms equal to twenty-fivemillion times the population of earth mustbe present in the test tube for a chemist to

detect them in a chemical trace. About 125septillions of atoms are in an inch cube oflead. And we cannot come anywhere nearevenseeinganatomthroughamicroscope!Yet the atom is as large as our solar systemcompared to the electrons of which it iscomposed. All atoms are alike in havingone positive central sun of energy aroundwhich one or more negative charges ofenergy revolve. The number of negativeelectrons each atom contains determinesthe nature of the so-called “element” ofwhich it is a part.An atom of hydrogen, for instance, issupposed to have one negative electron asa satellite to its positive center. For thisreason chemists accept it as a standard of

atomic weight. The atomic weight ofhydrogen is placed at 1.The diameter of an electron is to thediameter of the atom as the diameter of ourEarth is to the diameter of the orbit in whichit moves around the sun.More specifically, it has been determinedthatanelectronisone-eighteen-thousandth of the mass of a hydrogenatom.It is clear therefore that matter is capable ofa degree of refinement almost beyond thepower of the human mind to calculate. Wehave not as yet been able to analyze thisrefinement beyond the electron, and evenin getting thus far have had to supplementour physical observation of effects withimagination to cover certain gaps.

The building up of Matter from Electronshas been an involuntary process ofindividualizing intelligent energy.Food, water and air are usually consideredtobethethreeessentialelementsnecessary to sustain life. This is very true,but there is something still more essential.Every time we breathe, we not only fill ourlungs with air which has been charged withmagnetism by the Solar Orb, but we fillourselves with Pranic Energy, the breath oflife replete with every requirement for mindand spirit. This life giving spirit is far morenecessary than air, food, or water, becausea man can live for forty days without food,for three days without water, and for a fewminutes without air; but he cannot live asingle second without Ether. It is the oneprime essential of life, and contains all the

essentials of life, so that the process ofbreathing furnishes not only food for bodybuilding, but food for mind and spirit aswell.

Chapter 2: The ChemistUniversal intelligence leaves its source tobecomeembodiedinmaterialformsthrough which it returns to its source as anindividual or entity. Mineral life animated byelectro-magnetism is the first step ofintelligence upward, toward its universalsource. Universal energy is intelligent, andthis involuntary process by which matter isbuilt up, is an intelligent process of naturewhich has for its specific purpose theindividualization of her intelligence.Stockwell says: “The basis of life andconsciousness lies back of the atoms, andmay be found in the universal ether.”Hemstreet says: “Mind in the ether is nomore unnatural than mind in flesh andblood.” Stockwell says: “The ether is

comingtobeapprehendedasanimmaterial superphysical substance, fillingall space, carrying in its infinite, throbbingbosom the specks of aggregated dynamicforce called worlds. It embodies theultimate spiritual principle, and representsthe unity of those forces and energies ental,allandspiritual, as they are known to man.”Dolbear, in his great work on the ether,says: “Besides the function of energy andmotion, the ether has other inherentproperties, out of which could emerge,underpropercircumstances,otherphenomena, such as life or mind orwhatever may be in the substratum.”The microscopic cell, a minute speck ofmatter that is to become man, has in it the

promise and germ of mind. May we notdraw the inference that the elements ofmind are present in those chemicalelements - carbon, oxygen, hydrogen,nitrogen, sulphur, phosphorous, sodium,potassium, chlorine - that are found in thecell? not only must we do so; but we mustgo further, since we know that each ofthese elements, and every other, is built upof one invariable unit, the electron, and wemust therefore assert that mind is potentialin the unit of matter - the electron itself.”Atoms of mineral matter are attracted toeach other to form aggregates or masses.This attraction is called Chemical Affinity.Chemical combinations of atoms are due totheir magnetic relations to each other.Positive atoms will always attract negativeatoms. The combination will last only so

long as a still more positive force is notbrought to bear on it to break it apart.Twoormoreatomsbroughtintocombination form a molecule, which isdefined as “the smallest particle of asubstance that can maintain its ownidentity.”Thus, a molecule of water is a combinationof one atom of hydrogen and two atoms ofoxygen (H2O).In building a plant, nature works with colloidcells rather than with atoms, for she hasbuilt up the cell as an entity just as she builtthe atom and the molecule as entities withwhich to work in mineral substance. Thevegetable cell (colloid), has power to drawto itself from earth, air, and water whatever

energies it needs for its growth. It thereforedraws from mineral life and dominates it.When vegetable matter is sufficientlyrefined to be receptive to still more of theuniversal intelligent energy, animal lifeappears. The plant cells have now becomeso plastic that they have idualalsoadditionalpowers; those of sensational magnetism. Itdraws its life forces from both mineral andplant life, and therefore dominates them.The body is an aggregate of cells animatedby the spiritual magnetic life that tendstowardorganizingthesecellsintocommunities, and these communities intocoordinated bodies which will operate theentire mass of the body as a conscious

entity able to carry itself from one place tothe other.Atoms and molecules and their energiesare now subordinated to the welfare of thecell. Each cell is a living, conscious entity,capable of selecting its own food, ofresisting aggression, and of ousness, intuition, and volition, soeach federated group of cells has acollectiveindividualconsciousness,intuition, and volition. Likewise, eachcoordinated group of federations; until theentire body has one central brain where thegreat coordination of all the “brains” takesplace.

The body of an average human being iscomposed of some twenty-six trillion(26,000,000,000,000) cells; the brain andthe spinal cord by themselves consist ofsome two billion.The biogenic law proves that everyvertebrate, like every other animal, evolvesfrom a single cell. Even the humanorganism, according to Haeckel, is at first asimple nucleated globule of plasm, about1.125 inch in diameter, barely visible to thenaked eye as a tiny point. The ovumtransmits to the child by heredity thepersonal traits of the mother, the sperm-cellthose of the father; and this stics of the soul as well as thebody. What is plasm? What is thismysterious living substance that we find

everywhere as the material foundation ofthe wonders of life? Plasm or protoplasm,is, as Huxley rightly said, the physical basisof organic life; to speak more precisely, it isa chemical compound of carbon that aloneaccomplishes the various processes of life.In its simplest form the living cell is merelya soft globule of plasm, containing a firmernucleus. As soon as it is fertilized, itmultipliesbydivisionandformsacommunity or colony of many special cells.These differentiate themselves, and bytheir specialization, or modifications, thetissues which compose the various organsare developed. the developed, many-celledorganisms of man and all higher animalsresemble, a social, civil community, thenumerous single individuals of which aredeveloped in various ways, but were

originally only simple cells of one commonstructure.All life on this earth, as Dr. Butler points outin “How the Mind Cures,” began in the formof a cell which consisted of a bodyanimated by a mind. In the beginning andlong afterward the animating mind was theone we now call the subconscious. But asthe forms grew in complexity and producedorgans of sense, the mind threw out anaddition, . . . forming another part, the onewe now call the conscious. While at first allliving creatures had but one guide that theymust follow in all things, this later additionto mind gave the creature a choice.This was the formation of what has beentermed Free Will.

Each cell is endowed with an individualintelligence, that helps it carry on, as by amiracle, its complex labors. The cell is thebasis of man, and this fact must beconstantly borne in mind in dealing with thewonders of mental chemistry.As a nation is made up of a large numberof living individuals, so the body is made upof a large number of living cells. Thecitizens of a country are engaged in variedpursuits - some in the work of production,in field, forest, mine, factory; some in thework of distribution, in transportation, inwarehouse, store, or bank; some in thework of regulation, in legislative halls, onthe bench, in the executive chair; some inthe work of protection - soldiers, sailors,doctors, teachers, preachers. Likewise inthe body some cells are working on

production: mouth, stomach, intestines,lungs, supplying food, water, air; some areengaged in distribution of supplies andelimination of wastes: heart, blood, lymph,lungs, liver, kidneys, skin; some performthe office regulation: brain, spinal cord,nerves; some are occupied in protection;whitebloodcorpuscles,skin,bone,muscle; there are also cells to which areentrusted the reproduction of species.As the vigor and welfare of a nation dependfundamentally on the vitality and efficiencyand cooperation of its citizens, so thehealth and life of the body depend upon thevitality, efficiency and cooperation of itsmyriad cells.We have seen that the cells are gatheredintosystemsandgroupsforthe

performanceofparticularfunctionsessential to physical life and expression,such as we see in organs and tissues.So long as the several parts all acttogether, in concord and due regard to oneanother and the general purposes of theorganism, there is health and efficiency.But when from any cause discord arises,illness supervenes. Disease is lack ofcomfort and harmony.In the brain and nervous system the cellsare grouped in their action according to theparticular functions which they are calledupon to perform. It is in this way that we areable to see, to taste, to smell, to feel, andto hear. It is also in this way we are able torecall past experiences, to remember factsand figures, and so on.

In mental and physical health these variousgroups of neurons work in fine harmony,but in disease they do not. In normalconditions the ego holds all these individualcells and groups, as we as system of cells,in harmonious and coordinate action.Disease represents dissociated organicaction; certain systems or groups, each ofwhich is made up of a vast number ofmicroscopiccells,beginfunctioningindependently, and hence inharmoniously;and thus upset the tone of the wholeorganism. A single organ or system canthus get out of tune with the rest of the bodyand do serious harm. this is one kind ofdisease.In a federation of any sort, efficiency andconcord of action depend upon the strength

and confidence accorded the centraladministration of its affairs; and just inproportion to the degree of failure tomaintain these conditions are discord andconfusion sure to ensue.Nels Quevli makes this clear in “CellIntelligence;” he says, “The intelligence ofman is the intelligence possessed by thecells in his brain. If man is intelligent and byvirtue thereof is able to combine andarrange matter and force so as to effectstructures such as houses and railroads,why is not the cell also in
