You want tofill in the grid with the letters from your Word-Doku word. For example, the word “magick” has six letters. Summon yourpowers of logic and elimination to fill the grid with the lettersm, a, g, i, c, and k to fill in the grid. It’s just like Sudokuexcept that you use letters instead of numbers.7

A wizard who has become a master may work with otheradepts, or experts, to summon all kinds of creatures such asgiants, gnomes, or a goblin. Witches often work together ingroups known as covens. Together they can summon strangebeasts such as the manticore, which has the body of a lion, the tail of a scorpion, and a human head! Magick can alsobe used to turn a common animal, such as a lizard, into amagical one, such as a wyvern—which is part dragon, partserpent.Magick users often rely on birds such as the falconor the larger arctic gyrfalcon to carry messages for longdistances. When traveling themselves, magicians mayencounter forest spirits such as nymphs or a sylvan. Awise mystic will be careful to stay away from the ghoulswho spend their time near graveyards, munching on thedead. In the desert, it is best to avoid the sphinx, a creaturewith the head of a woman, the body of a lion and the wingsof an eagle. As the Egyptians can tell you, her riddles aredifficult to solve. A knight or prince often uses magick torescue a damsel.15

Some magicians become famous. Merlin was a wellknown wizard who lived as a hermit and gave King Arthurthe magickal sword Excalibur.Magicians often study other subjects as well. Analchemist can turn any metal into gold, and an herbalistknows all about plants—often an important spell ingredient! These professions have a history that goes farther back thanancient Greece, where it is said the F u r i e s, or goddesses ofanger, would punish you if you committed a crime. Sucha crime could be turning a dead person into a walking, talking zombie!Magick Creatures and People Puzzles16

Valuable magick ingredients such as argent—an ancientname for silver—are often kept in cupboards that can onlybe opened by charms or brief poems spoken to perform aspell. For potions, ingredients such as sparkling fairy dust orthe poisonous herb wolfsbane may be mixed in a pot overthe hearth fire or in a goblet. Or a wizard might drop somepowder from a ground-up garnet stone into the flames of acandle while speaking a magic word, such as presto! Aflower or herb can be used to make a tisane, or tea, thatheals.A spell might create a mirage or vision in the flames,or it could open a vortex to another dimension. Spells canbe used to create an amulet or two out of ancient relics witha magick symbol on them. The amulet may shine with aglowing luster and bestow the power of flight. A spell calleda glamor morphs a person so they look like someone else.Sometimes saying special words a certain number of timeshelps cast a spell.51

Some potions can be mixed only during certainseasons such as winter or spring, or when certain stars ofthe zodiac are bright in the sky. Someone playing trickswith dark magick might end up jinxed or cursed. Going into a trance can be dangerous, and so can a love charm. Becareful you don’t regret what you wished for.Magick Spells and Potions Puzzles52

WISHEDI WDEEWIWHED SA Summary of the Magickal Life90

Magicians often live in a gothic-style castle, with alabyrinth of shrubbery in the yard. An intricate mosaicon the floor may hide an enigma—or riddle—in its picture.Witches might work with the nature spirits to grow a lushgarden of magick herbs. The yard may even include amenhir, which is a standing stone like those in Stonehenge. Some wicked magick-users live in dark crypts underground,as if to entomb themselves.Cloaks must be worn to keep warm when travelingthrough a portal into the realms of shadow, since darkforces often create a drop in temperature. A wizard mightwear a turban on his head, or a pointed hat.93

A magick-user sometimes acts as an oracle, usingmagickal foresight to predict the future. Dreams often carrymystical messages, and so can a nightmare. If one’s crystalball is cloudy, palmistry can be used to search people’shands for clues to their fate.Though magick fills users with wonder, the fabledpowers must be used with wisdom. Secret spells written onparchment must be protected by a cipher, or code, that willunlock them. Witches and wizards would do well to learn avariety of skills such as speaking Elvish, the elf language, orhypnotism. This helps one gain membership in one of themagick profession’s guilds. The Magickal Life Puzzles94
