AcknowledgementMacEwan University recognizes the importance of honouring and acknowledgingTreaty 6 Territory as Canada and Canadians work toward strengthening relations andbuilding bridges with all Aboriginal communities.Treaty 6 was signed on August 23, 1876 at Fort Carlton in Saskatchewan. The totalarea of the Treaty stretches from western Alberta, through Saskatchewan and intoManitoba; and includes 50 First Nations. Provisions in the Treaty recognize the notionof the medicine chest as well as the right to education (http://www.treatysix.org/).MacEwan values the historical importance and offerings of the Aboriginal Peoples andtheir cultures and appreciates the significant contribution that the Aboriginalcommunity engaged in the past as well as today and in the future. Honouring the rightof First Nations for self-determination must be respected; including the right to selecttheir own government and political structures, and to decide and lead the social, cultural, spiritual, and economic progress of their people. In the spirit of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, Faculty atMacEwan have the responsibility to shape the views of student who will then shareknowledge with others and engage in care which honours diversity.IAHC 38th Annual ConferencePage 2 of 36

Sister Marie Simone RoachJuly 30, 1922 – July 2, 2016Roman Catholic Nun, Registered Nurse, scholar, department chair, educator, ethicist, mentor, friend, and colleague. In 1980, the Canadian Nurses Association requested Sister Simone design acode of ethics to guide everyday practice for registered nurses in Canada; although revisions to thecode have happened it continues to reflect her original intent. For her life of dedication to theprofession and discipline of nursing she became a member of the Order of Canada in 2010;specifically for her advancement of nursing education and ethics. She was born, Eileen Roach, on July 30, 1922, to parents Mary and Simon; her religious name is inhonour of her parents. Growing up in New Waterford, Cape Breton Island, she remembers a lot ofhard work with four sisters and six brothers, but also a home full of love. She became a nurse aftergraduating from St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing. The Sisters of St. Martha were in charge ofthe local hospital and their spiritual actions influenced her decision to join their congregationprofessing her final vows in 1950. However, this wasn’t the end of her formal studies – graduatingwith a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from St. Francis Xavier, a Master of Science in Nursing(Education) from Boston University, receiving her PhD in 1970 from Catholic University of Americain Washington, D.C., and finally a Postdoctoral scholar in ethics at Harvard Divinity School inMassachusetts. Her scholarly pursuits began with understanding the contemporary ethics of human nature andcaring. She recognized that, “caring is the most common, authentic criterion of humanness” (2002,p. 28). Her caring theory, Caring, The Human Mode of Being provided guidance to her question,“What is a nurse doing when she or he is caring?” (2002, p. 43). She has lectured internationally, her theory is the basis for curriculum, and her articles resonate and influence registered nurses inall practice areas.Later on in life – centering prayer, baking, storytelling, and singing became central. She diedpeacefully at Bethany, the Sisters of St. Martha’s Motherhouse, in Antigonish, Nova Scotiasurrounded by her community. She has influence so many of our lives, personally andprofessionally, and will be missed.Submitted by Dr. Colleen Maykut (mentee, colleague, and friend)IAHC 38th Annual ConferencePage 4 of 36

IAHC President’s MessageDear supporter of caring science in nursing,“Rediscovering love and compassion in caring practice and in caring science” is the theme of the 2017Annual Conference of the International Association for Human Caring (IAHC). In 1979, anthropologistand nursing theorist, Madeleine Leininger, identified human caring as the essence of the nursingprofession, and with a group of like-minded nurses, founded IAHC. IAHC needs your support to sustainits growth into a future where threats to human caring, including dehumanizing technology andunequal distribution of healthcare in many parts of the world, have the potential to greatly reduce thehealing effects of caring practice and caring science.Patrick J Dean RN, EDD, OSTJClinical Associate Professor University of Minnesota School of NursingInternational Association for Human Caring PresidentDean of Faculty of Nursing – MacEwan UniversityI am so pleased to welcome you to the 38th Annual Conference of the (IAHC) International Associationfor Human Caring!
