The StingSouthsidebeekeepersClubASN: A0047348YThe of cial newsletter of the Southside Beekeepers Club.SOUTHSIDE BEEKEEPERS MISSION STATEMENTWe work to ensure a thriving and sustainablebeekeeping industry. To this end we advocate forbeekeepers’ interests, support honey bee health, research, deliver practical training, education, mentoring and informationThe Sting Issue No. 20 - June 2020NEXT CLUB MEETINGClub meetings are cancelled due to the Covid-19outbreak.would be most welcome as there are manyroles that require lling. We would also likesomeone to help liaise with and organise guestspeakers for club meetings for when we nallymanage to meet in person.PRESIDENTS REPORTHello MembersI am looking forward to catching up with you allat a club meeting, possibly during Septemberdepending on lockdown. This is a great time to be thinking about whatyou can do to support your club. Covid-19means that the AGM, normally held in July andelection of the executive and committeepositions is postponed. Make sure you keepan eye for future editions of The Sting andemails from the club secretary Ted Cottle asthis is the main method of letting membersknow when regular club meetings recommence and the AGM will be held.Covid-19 and winter have resulted in beehusbandry and club related activities beingslowed, however the committee has still beenworking hard and trying new things to keep usall engaged. We are in the process of migrating the clubsemail addresses to the Microsoft 365 platformwhich should result in a considerable reductionin spam and ongoing maintenance.I asked members in last months edition of theSting their opinion on how they see futuremeetings running once covid-19 restrictionsare eased and would they be willing to attendin person or would they be interested in astreamed version of the meeting or even doboth. Unfortunately we received no repliesfrom the membership. This is a bigdisappointment and without feedback, the clubcannot start to plan future events. The committee have decided to produce a lineof memorabilia in the form of club brandedpens and baseball style hats as a way ofthanking the membership for theirperseverance during lock-down. Mark Collierwill have more to say later in this edition. The committee wants to give a big thankyou toMarita Johnson for all her work and ideas.Marita will take a 3 months leave from thecommittee to support her husband and hisministry work. One of Marita’s roles has beenarranging our guest speakers for clubmeetings. This has been very challengingduring Covid-19 with the added complicationthat the club has not been able to meet andresulting in speaker postponements andcancellations. As a result, we have space foran additional committee member. If you wouldlike to participate by joining the committee, youWe had a winner in our World Bee Daycolouring competition - see page 3.On a separate note, I am interested to hear ifany club member has had any experience withbee sting therapy for arthritis. if so, please callor email me.Wishing you all good health and happinessRegardsGraeme Gill - President1

Feeding your bees this winter - By Mark CollierWinter is well upon us and if your bees don’thave enough honey stores pagar(4kg), a measuring jug, boiling water (2 litres),a wooden spoon, large zip lock bags, a 5-6litre saucepan and a box cutter. Don’t use rawsugar, brown sugar or molasses as theycontain impurities that may harm the bees ormay be dif cult for the bees to digest.Fill the large zip lock bag with approx 2 litres ofsyrup and close, removing as much air aspossible. Now for the fun part!Add 2 of litres of boiling water to a saucepanand add 4kg of white sugar. Place thesaucepan over a medium heat and stir gentlyuntil the sugar has dissolved. This will takeContinued on page 65

The Sting Issue No. 20 - June 2020Feeding your bees this winter - continuedBefore you open your hive, make sure youhave all your tools ready, including a hive tool, box cutter, the bag of syrup and smoker.Give your hive a few puffs of smoke, wait a fewminutes, lift the lid, add a few more puffs ofsmoke under the lid. Wait a few more minutes, remove the lid and gently place the bag ofsyrup on top of the hive matt, while trying tonot squash any bees under the matt or bag ofsyrup.Carefully cut the zip lock bag with the boxcutter, two to four, 1-2cm long slits in the uppersurface. IT IS VITAL THAT YOU DON’T PEIRCETHE BOTTOM SURFACE as syrup will run intothe hive and drown your bees.Replace the lid6

In July 2016, AHBIC endorsed the Code and its gradualadoption across Australia. The Code provides a clear framework for all beekeepers toengage in best-practice biosecurity. Its purpose is to helpimprove the management of established pests and diseases,as well as increase preparedness and surveillance for exoticpests and diseases that threaten our honey bee industry, suchas the Varroa mite.A copy of the Code can be downloaded from ndnational-bee-biosecurity-program/The new Livestock Disease Control Regulations 2017 incorporating the Code came into effect on 12 June 2019. Thenew regulations cover activities that all beekeepers should already be undertaking to minimise the impactof pests and diseases on their own hives and those of their fellow beekeepers. Some new regulations apply to all beekeepers ; others apply only to beekeepers with 50 or more hives. There are consequences for failing to comply with all apiary legislation in Victoria which may include being issued withan infringement notice or court action for more serious or repeat offences.
