We desire to build acommunity based on forgiveness, caring, reaching out to oneanother, personal prayer, and sacramental worship.”

ST. BERNARD PARISHPAGE 2We have reached the final week of Lent! Now provides us some time to consider what Holy Weekevents we may wish to attend. Holy Week begins with next Sunday’s Palm Sunday Mass. Palm Sundayis striking for its use of the color red to remind us of the suffering of Christ and the shedding of his bloodon Calvary. On Palm Sunday, we will again receive our own palm branches to unite us with the adoringcrowds of Jerusalem who welcomed him his final week of life, only to turn on him by the end of theweek. The Passion is read on Palm Sunday and Good Friday. It is a sobering experience for those withan open heart. Please come and be prepared to be the voice of the crowd during the reading.Holy Thursday provides the opportunity to reflect on the gift of the Holy Eucharist and the priesthood that Christ gaveto serve the people of God. Thursday night makes use of the imagery from the Last Supper and usually the washing ofthe Apostle’s feet. This year, with the reality of the virus, we will forgo the washing of feet. The washing is a reminderof the mandate to serve our neighbor in love, and also a reminder that we must each be washed in the blood of the Lambto be saved. As Christ reminds Peter during the event, “Unless I wash you Peter, you will have no part in me.” HolyThursday closes with a procession of the Blessed Sacrament amidst the faithful, reminding them that the Eucharist istruly the risen Lord with us. The Blessed Sacrament is usually kept on a reserved Altar so we can spend time prayingwith Jesus following Mass. This year we will have the procession with the Blessed Sacrament but not the Altar ofRepose.Good Friday has another reading of the Passion from a different gospel. The services are not a Mass but rather are apart of the continual Mass that began Holy Thursday night and will end Saturday night at the Easter Vigil. Good Fridayis again awash in red, remembering the blood of Christ and his suffering. At the service, there is a solemn time for eachof us to personally venerate the wood of the Cross. We will avoid kissing the cross or touching the cross this year. TheCross confronts each of us differently and can be a very moving encounter as it seeks to heal our wounds. We will havea service at both 12pm and 2pm.The Easter Vigil on Saturday night at 8pm can be an especially powerful experience for the believer. It is a long nightof prayer, nearly two hours, filled with an opening fire symbolizing Christ conquering the darkness of this world, a recounting of the story of salvation through many readings, and of course the first celebration of the Eucharist since HolyThursday night. It is also when persons throughout the world are baptized and confirmed into the Catholic Faith. Consider what you might wish to attend, view our times here or at nearby parishes. FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENTPAGE 3Fifth Sunday of Lent“I will be their God and they shall be my people.” - Jeremiah 31:33What does it mean to be God’s people? It means we recognize that everything we have and everything we are belongsto God. We aren’t “owners” of anything, we are merely “stewards” of the gifts God has given us. It means we are willing to use our gifts and our lives to care for our family, our neighbors and for people we don’t know, just as God caresfor each of us.Safety CommitteeOur Bishop has asked parishes in the Diocese tocreate a Safety Committee, which we have donehere.
