For many Chinese second language learners, pinyin has become an alternative writing system for Chinese language. However, pinyin is just an aid to pronunciation (McBride-Chang et. al., 2005). It was noted that in teaching Chinese as a foreign language the majority of learners seem to embrace pinyin as a substitute of Chinese characters.
