Teacher Recruitment Program:ElementaryTexas State University-San Marcos was founded as a teachers college in 1899,and more than a century later, it continues the tradition of producing only thehighest-quality educators.The graduate Teacher Recruitment Program (TRP) in elementary education is designed to providean accelerated pathway for well-qualified, post-baccalaureate students to earn an initial teachingcertificate prior to the granting of the master’s degree. TRP students have the option to completethe last 18 hours of the 36-hour master’s program while earning an income from fulltime teaching; or students may postpone full-time teaching until the master’s degree iscomplete, if they wish to do so.Since 2001, TRP students have entered teaching from all walks oflife (attorneys, engineers, nurses, scientists, newspaper reporters,social workers, high-tech workers and more). Applications are due March 1for the fall semester and October 1 for the spring semester.Course WorkThe 36-hour master of education (MEd) is structured so thatthe initial two long semesters of TRP offer a full-certificationprogram, including 18 hours of graduate course work and 14weeks of student teaching. The course work may begin in eitherthe fall or spring semesters. The first-semester classes are deliveredat the Round Rock Higher Education Center and on-site in areapublic schools.The initial 18 hours of TRP provide a means for studentsto complete course work and fieldwork for initial teachercertification integrating theory and practice in the real-worldcontext of public schools. A substantial portion of time duringthe initial 18 hours of course work is devoted to work in localarea public schools and requires that TRP students attend threeintegrated daytime classes taught on public school campuses. Theremaining 18 hours are designed to engage students in continuedintellectual growth through advanced-level evening and summercourse work to help students improve their practice, growprofessionally and develop campus leadership skills.Due to its accelerated nature, a substantial portion of TRPrequires a daytime commitment in public schools. Followingcompletion of the initial 18-hour teacher certification portion ofTRP, students are eligible to apply for state teacher certification;once certified, they may become employed as teachers while theycomplete their master’s degrees.Admission PolicyApplicants must meet the Texas State Graduate College’sminimum GPA requirement of 2.75 for the last 60 hours ofcourse work leading to the bachelor’s degree. No GRE score isrequired. Applicants must also undergo a screening interview,written reflection and online survey.
