Guest Conductors6th Grade Honor Band Conductor—Kevin SadyMr. Kevin Sady grew up in Gardnerville, Nevada and was involved band all though middle and high school. He a ended theUniversity of Southern California on scholarship and studied trombone with Dr. Terry Cravens. Mr. Sady then transferred to theUniversity of Nevada where he studied with Dr. Mack McGrannahan and a ained his Bachelors and Masters degrees in MusicEduca on. He started his teaching career at Pau‐Wa Lu Middle School in Douglas County and transferred to Galena High Schoolwhere he has taught since 2006.Mr. Sady runs the award winning concert, jazz and marching bands at Galena High School, runs field show compe ons,chaired local honor bands, honor jazz bands, and is chairman for the Nevada Music Educa ons Associa on All‐State Band. Mr.Sady has had the pleasure of being the guest conductor at Lake Tahoe Music Camp and honor bands all over northern Nevada.Mr. Sady also has a private trombone studio and is the principle trombonist for the Reno Pops orchestra. He has played for theReno Wind Symphony, and subs tuted for the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Reno Jazz Orchestra.Middle School Honor Band Conductor—James MazzaferroMr. James Mazzaferro is currently director of instrumental music at Sheldon High School, located in the Elk Grove UnifiedSchool District. His teaching assignment includes Marching Band, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, String Orchestra, Monday‐Friday Jazz Band, Tuesday‐Thursday Jazz Band, and Advanced Placement Music Theory. He has also been the conductor of theCosumnes River College Orchestra, a posi on he has held since 1999. He is also the Camp Director/Ar s c Director of CazaderoMusic Camp, a summer music camp for musicians in grades five through high school.Mr. Mazaferro received his Bachelor’s degree in Music Educa on from San Francisco State University, playing in the Sym‐phonic Band under the direc on of Edwin C. Kruth, and served as Principal Bassist in the University Symphony under the direc‐on of Lazlo Varga. He received his Master’s degree in Instrumental Conduc ng from California State University, Sacramento,studying conduc ng under Robert Halseth. He is a mul ple recipient of “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. He was named2005 Teacher of the Year in the Elk Grove Unified School District and in 2009 was named as a Crystal Apple recipient as an out‐standing educator in the EGUSD by LDS students from Sheldon High School. In 2009, he was recognized by the Sacramento AreaTheater Associa on with an “Elly” Award for his musical direc on of Sheldon’s produc on of “Bye Bye Birdie.” In 2012, he wasone of eight High School Band Directors in the country that were named a Bandworld Legion of Honor Lauerate by the John Phil‐ip Sousa Founda on.High School Honor Band Conductor—Dr. Edward C. HarrisDr. Edward C. Harris is the Director of Bands at San José State University. He received his Bachelor of Music degree in musiceduca on, and Master of Arts degree in clarinet performance from San Francisco State University. He received his Doctor of Artsdegree in conduc ng and clarinet performance from the University of Northern Colorado. He served as Director of InstrumentalMusic at Sequoia High School in Redwood City, California from 1971 to 1978.Under Dr. Harris’ direc on, the San Jose State University Wind Ensemble has gained wide recogni on for its diverse and cre‐a ve programs. He has served as President of the Western Division of the College Band Directors’ Na onal Associa on and hasbeen on the Board of Directors for the California Band Directors Associa on and California Music Educators Associa on. In 1995,Dr. Harris was honored to receive the “Stairway of the Stars” Award from the City of Santa Monica for dis nguished contribu onsto the arts in California. In 2003, he was honored with the Gilbert T. Freitas Memorial Award for Music Educa on from the Cali‐fornia Music Educator’s Associa on Bay Sec on and the CMEA Don Schmeer/Byron Hoyt Band Educator Award honoring excel‐lence in instrumental instruc on and performance. He received the 2006 CMEA John Swain College/University Educator Awardfor his progressive leadership at San Jose State University. In 2010, Dr. Harris was named the “Music Educator of the Year” by theBay Sec on of the California Music Educators Associa on, and he received an Abby Award for dis nguished arts leadership fromthe Silicon Valley Arts and Business Associa on. In 2011, he was elected into the pres gious American Band Masters Associa on.Dr. Harris was appointed the conductor and ar s c director for the San Jose Wind Symphony: one of California’s premiereconcert bands with performances at the World Associa on for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles Conference, the California MusicEducators Associa on Conference. As a professional clarine st, Dr. Harris has performed with the Greeley Philharmonic in Colo‐rado, the Pacific Symphony in California, and the Modesto Symphony. His primary teachers include Robert McGinnis of the NewYork Philharmonic, Donald Carroll of the San Francisco Symphony, and Dorrace Stalvey of Los Angeles.
